Nicolas Otamendi | City Player

It isnt really as generic as that at all, depends on the player in question. I'd pay that for Varane in an instant even though he's a CB. Whether Otamendi is worth that much, not too sure, havent seen him play enough.

I think CB's the ilk of Varane, Hummels, Silva and Godin are extremely rare and worth € 50m IMO.

Having said that € 50m for David Luiz made zero sense.

PAying 50m for CBs doesnt make you catch up...it makes you fall further behind!!

We paid 30 million for Rio Ferdinand back in 2002. I am not sure Otamendi is the guy to spend 50 million on but, spending big on a defender is not always a bad idea.

Rio Ferdinand is a different class compared to this guy. He's not even worth his buy out clause hence it wasn't met.

Do Manchester United have any interest in Aymeric Laporte or Nicolás Otamendi?

GUILLEM SAYS: Valencia think that Manchester United will pay the £38.2m buy-out clause in the summer for Nicolás Otamendi. United have already offered £27m and Valencia think they’ll improve on that offer, so the club are preparing for it.

Shit thats a LOT of money for Otamendi.

I saw this tweet and it surprised me. I can't recall seeing his name mentioned before and to be honest I am not really sure what he is like. Anyone want to give me a quick analysis of him? Or compare his style to a more well known player?

We got linked with him before, especially earlier this year. I cant comment on him, but @Ekeke can

I've not seen much of him either. For those who have, who would you rather us sign, him or Hummels?
Sign both. :) The figure going around for Otamendi is €50m euros which would be £36m. That would have been closer to £40m just a few months ago but the Euro crashed big time.

I'm a huge fan of Hummels but right now going on form and play style, considering Otamendi is much faster I would sign Otamendi. Hummels just can't cover the space behind him and this will leave him exposed far too much in our system.

I think he is an excellent defender and one we should certainly be looking at, But I wouldn't pay over £30million for any CB in the current market I don't think. The only ones that you would perhaps take a gamble like that for would be someone like Varane and Laporte who are young and have seemingly very high potential.

3 lunatics? Poor Smalling. If we buy Otamendi then LvG needs to cease his obsession with CB's bringing the ball over the halfway line as none of the ones we'd have are good at it.

We were linked with him in the summer, again a few months into the season and for the last few months the Spanish sources have been as clear as suggesting we already have an agreement to take him.

No idea if it'll happen, seems likely enough to me though. He's perhaps 1 level above Smalling in his defending, not lightyears ahead but for Smalling to have a partner who defends better than he does would be a severe improvement on the past few seasons. He's right footed, not particularly big but wins the ball in the air a lot, scores some goals with headers from set pieces and he's a hard worker/gritty/determined type who will stick his head where its dangerous and take a kick to get the ball clear. He also has some leadership qualities in his play, but I dont know if he speaks English and even if he does he'd be a newcomer to the league. But possibly in a few seasons he could contend to be one of the captains

So he's the CB I'm expecting us to get. He's definitely a better defender than Hummels has been this season as Hummels has been caught out quite a few times.

How is he on the ball?

I like Arsenal's Gabriel from the little I have seen. Is Otamendi is a similar player?

No, he's quite ordinary on the ball. Nothing wrong, but nothing to shout about. However Smalling has improved on the ball under LVG so Otamendi probably would as well

How good is this guy?
I mean, I know his FM status is excellent , but seriously, his career hasn't taken off like I guess it was expected to.

We seem to get linked with these players, Otamendi, Strootman etc, but never seem to go through with it, and then the very next season, we seem to want them at triple the price

Yes he wasnt able to be registered at Valencia so they had a desperation loan. I have no idea why he couldnt go to a better place than that, when he started at Valencia this season I was already doubting him because of that and the comments of some Porto fans that the season they sold him he wasnt as good as previously. In fact when we were first linked with him and it was posted on this site I can remember posting that he's not the solution, because it had only been a few months into the season and I wasnt expecting him to keep it up. But having watched him this season he exceeded all expectations

Smalling can run the ball out fine but his passing when he gets across the halfway line is still poor and he looks like a deer in the headlights when he finds himself near the final 3rd. If LvG is going to buy Otamendi then he really needs to quit the stuff with splitting the CB's with #6 and having one of them bring the ball out. With the set of CB's we'd have we'd be much better off just having them defend like Chelsea's pairing do.

Really don't want us to sign him. He is decent at best and not worth the fee. He is not suited to our system and would be another defender who is a little bit limited on the ball. He is also 27 and still less experienced and proven than Hummels, but would cost as much. I know him for a few years now and I never thought he was something special, didn't really get in an average Argentina defence either. He had a good season overall in a pretty good Valencia defence, but that's again probably just the result of a pretty good unit rather than a really great individual imo (I wouldn't sign any of the Southampton CBs either for example).
Hummels, Godin, Laporte or Varane (unlikely), that's the one we should go out and try to get them with a big fee. Everyone else on the market is not worth that kind of money imo and then we can rather look at cheaper, young candidates, which we can develope into a United defender.

Yeah but he has a beard.

Thanks. Sounds alright then.

He's not worth all that money, imo. If we are going to spend big I would rather have Laporte.

Reminds me of Leonadis...

For the money being quoted for him we could activate the buy out clause of either Godin or Laporte.....or even work out something with Madrid for Varane.

The only CB we wouldn't be able to afford is probably David "I am actually worth more than £50M" Luiz.

Is this guy one Jorge Mendes' clients? Or am I getting him mixed up with another player:confused:
If not, I reckon we should steer clear - don't want anymore dealings with him if at all possible.

He had a good game against Barca this season, other than that, I've seen little of him tbh.

I think it is Mendes.

Sounds like this thread may be busy over the summer.

The Ole report suggests he will sign after the Copa America....does anyone when that starts/finish?
