Comparing current players with players from 20 years ago, WTF? I must remind you that the most dominant CBs we have seen since the early 2000s are mostly 6'2" and over. For the record, I think Rio and Vidic set up a standard that must be continuously followed at United: both CBs being 6'2" and over, one who's more comfortable on the ball, and the other who takes care of the physical aspect of the game.

And considering that the Premier League emphasizes a lot more on aerial play and physicality, the last thing we need is to have a CB who comes up with a "natural" handicap. Even Valdes is not getting my vote of confidence right now because of his height (I still have nightmares of Barthez and his short stature costing us a number of goals).

If he can outjump Bale and Ronaldo he's got nothing to worry about in the premier league, well apart from Crouch.

I posted the aerial duel stats of Otamendi vs all the top CBs in the world and his lack of height (lolololololol) does not effect him one bit. In fact he is actually one of the most dominant CBs in air. Start using facts instead of judging on a player plainly on his height.

If he is that good, then why was he not picked on Argentina's 23-man squad for the last World Cup? What happened to him there? That's the question nobody answered so far.

Personally i have no idea mate. I've never seen him play before this season, heard he was good before too but can't vouch for it personally. But this season he's been nothing short of sensational. Maybe he's just entering him prime? idk.

Ah after watching those clips now I remember him. He was a beast against Barca.

Tevez also missed out to be fair.

Because the Argentine national squad is always retarded? Zanetti and Cambiasso was not even included in their 2010 World Cup squad AFTER winning a treble with Inter. And Otamendi had some troubles with his work permit after signing for Valencia, and thus not being able to play for them and had to be loaned to Mineiro (at least half a season gone without playing much), which I assume would affect his chances of being picked for the WC squad as well.

Judging a player basing solely on his height, and if he is chosen for the WC squad or not, is a poor way of evaluating a player.

Herrera wasn't in Spain's squad and he's great.

It seems he was left out in favour of Demichelis. Whether it was Sabella playing favourites, I don't know.

For those that have seen him play what is he like as a communicator / leader / organiser of a defence?
And what is his English like.
For me whilst how good a player is individually is of course important I do feel we need somebody who brings those organisational skills that can help take Shaw and Jones (or Rojo and smalling etc) to the next level... Especially as we may have a new keeper and right back to integrate as well

The language side would be my only worry, that we need a leader at the back, if he can't speak any English, then it might be a problem if he is trying to organise what could be three English players.

Tevez wasn't picked aswell.

I'd definitely take him, he looks very good. People complaining at the fact he isn't an inch taller are nuts.

He looks intimidating, which is something we need. Someone opposition players won't mess with. Jones and Smalling always look like they are wetting themselves.

He has an impressive beard as well, which helps a lot

I wouldn't judge a player on squad selections for the national side. A lot of weird decisions for a lot of teams. But in the case of Otamendi I don't think it's strange at all. He was really nothing special before that season at all and never looked more than an average CB. Not really a criminal thing to prefer Garay and Demichelis over him. It's his first great season, difficult to say if he is just performing over his ability or if he can stay on that level now.

From what ive seen, he's a vidic clone, albeit a smaller one and a fecking argie. i think himself and smalling could have a really amazing partnership. but what would have to be made a priority is reinforcing the no.6 role in the squad, because having smalling + otamendi or Jones + otamendi leaves a lot to be desired in terms of ball playing ability. so whoever is playing as our deepest cm in the 3 needs to be a comfortable and composed passer.

Every player linked to us is 30million plus these days:lol:

He looks and plays like a tough nutter. Something we always need at the back of course.

They're right about Otamendi. His release clause is €50m and Valencia have no reason to negotiate. We either pay it or look elsewhere.

Most people said we overpaid for Herrera at the time because of his release clause. The fee was quickly forgotten when he started to perform well.

It's only brought up again if the player struggles. If Otamendi does a job for us at the back, then I couldn't care less if we throw €50m Valencia's way.

Is there anyone they might be willing to take in part exchange I wonder? Offer them Hernandez, Nani or Rafael to try and knock a few quid off. Gets one of them off our wage bill too if they're willing.

Well van Gaal has said the plans for ins and outs are clear and he is off on holiday. In that case, we either activate the clause in the coming days or we probably don't touch him.
Might depend on Copa America, hope we get it sealed before if he is our top target.
