You reckon? It'll be mostly lower paid players leaving plus berbatov and a few will be getting new deals.

Berba is on 90k, isnt he? Thats a lot in itself. add to that around 25k that PIG must be on. A pay cut for Rio in his extension should free up another 20-25k given his current contract. Park might leave and he'd be on 50k or so.

Close to 200k freed up right there. Even if we sign 2 quality players, the total wage they'd command is unlikely to be higher than this.

Wages unlikely to be an issue with the number of players likely to move out this season.

That may be a little too optimistic. In the second half of last season we lost a goodly (nice word) number of highly paid players - O'Shea, Brown, Neville, Scholes - yet our wage bill rose substantially!

I reckon City wages had an inflationary effect.

Yeah City have fecked everybody over if they hadn't stuck their oar in you'd have signed Rooney for about £150K and van Persie would be happy with about £130K. Now every useless toe-rag like Clichy wants about £100K a week.

Scudamore still thinks Chelsea and City are great for the Premier League. I wonder did he ever take a course in Economics?

They may not be great for the Premier League but they have been great for Porto. 20m for Paulo Ferreira, 30m Carvalho, 20m Bosingwa.

We'll have to improve a few deals now and a few more in the future, so I wouldn't say we'll open up £200k a week if we just release those players and reduce Ferdinand's deal. I don't think there's much left in our wage structure but we could probably get two more players without getting into trouble.

No idea on Gaitan as a player but it's gutting enough to be linked to another Mendes player. Guess we've got a return to pick up at some point.

Was Carvalho that much?

Portuguese clubs seem to do very well when selling players if you include the likes of Nani, Anderson, Luiz, Di Maria etc etc

I am not sure how many will be getting new deals. They have been signing extensions left and right this season. Cleverley, Welbeck, Hernandez, Smalling, Nani and Valencia I think have signed for in the past 12 months. De Gea, Young and Jones won't need one. Evans might get one but his wages aren't going to rise astromonically.

Can somebody sum up the past few pages? Anything happened or are we just speculating?

There's nothing in it; the club very clearly said through MUTV that they aren't remotely interested in signing him and won't be doing so.

is spot on. but quite a few of our players signed better contracts already this season, dont see many more better deals offered this term other than evans perhaps.

as i said, most of our already got better contracts this year. other than evans, dont see who'l be getting a better contract this term which would mean a substantial rise in the total wage.

i can see us freeing up around 150k which should be enough to get 2 players in or atleast not really cause a substantial increase in the total wages.

Which of course means absolutely nothing.

Don't agree at all. I can't recall us ever emphatically ruling out a player and then signing him shortly afterwards. Or ever, for that matter.

We may be a little coy about our transfer targets, but when the club denies interest three times in a couple of weeks, I think we can cross the player off our list.

Yes, though those values are in Euros, not pounds.

What has this guy done to warrant that kind of fee? How many have actually seen him play outside the CL? I didn't even notice him in our matches against them and I didn't notice him against Chelsea either.

Someone went ahead and edited wiki. Surprised that he managed to know how to edit it given his little knowledge of football transfers.
He signed for Manchester United on the 16th April 2012 for £23million pounds

Well he has joint top assists in the champions league along with 2 Madrid boys and Ribery, who have been involved in the competition longer this season. Other than that (which is a fair bit) not much I guess. But I think whoever signs him is paying mostly for potential and he has a lot of it. He has speed, outstanding dribbling and a sets up goals with crosses and passes. Other than maturing and being more influencial (which should come with experience and age) there isnt a lot more you could ask for from a wide player.

Kaka has less then half the game time Gaitan has. Only Messi and Ribery have more minutes than him, Ribery just by 29 minutes, so taking the playcount into this doesn't show him in a more favorable light. Torres has 4 assists is 4 less games.

Also you just pretty much describes Ashley Young really. He cost 16m and he's English. That fee is over the top. Wait a year and it will drop. It's a bit like buying a player that did well in the World Cup (even though I haven't even noticed him in 4 games).

Am I the only one who is very underwhelmed at the thought of United spending 25m+ on Gaitan? Granted, I have seen very little of him, but from what I have seen, I haven't exactly been that impressed. For 25m, I would expect a top top player.

I generally trust whatever Ferguson spends. Valencia, Young, Nani, Rooney, Carrick, Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand, Smalling, Jones, De Gea and Hernandez all speak for themselves. Yes there is the odd Berbatov and Hargreaves in there but generally he has it spot on. If he buys him, I'll be pleased we have identified and spent money on someone who makes us stronger.

Saf's signing from abroad have a bigger "miss" scale than domestic purchases don't they?

These are his signings from abroad the past seasons.

David De Gea, Bebe, Lindegaard, Hernandez, Obertan, Diouf, Tosic, Manucho, Nani, Anderson. Hargreaves, Twins, Possebon

DDG, Hernandez, Nani, twins and Lindegaard are Very good to fine signings.
Anderson is still a question mark.
It's about 50% "success rate".

A little further back you have some of his better signings in Vidic, Evra and Park.

Now, there must be a difference in how much these players were scouted and who spurred on the transfers. We don't have the details on it but SAF went out himself to watch DDG at least. Hernandez was well monitored. Manucho and Bebe are however signings that seem to be based on word to mouth or something. But at least with the big money involved there don't seem to be many failures. Hargreaves was fecked and Veron didn't work. It still seems like a lot to me even thought the media might be 5 million pounds off.

Fair point, but including players like Diouf, Possebon and Manucho distorts the argument. They weren't bought with the expectation that they'd go straight into the first team, they were pretty much hopeful punts. Players like Nani and Anderson were immediately first-team ready and you'd imagine Gaitan would be too.

I just mentioned every purchase from beyond the sea that had a place in the European squad. Everybody besides 16 year olds really. Diouf cost a little less than each twin. He's got as much right to be there as they are. Free agents are less of chance but they're still a transfer.

Yeah, but again I'd class the twins as gambles that paid off, in terms of the expectations we had when we signed them. Splitting hairs really I suppose
