Hopefully he gets a chance on the preseason tour. He'd be a decent backup option for us if we're gonna get rid of Anderson, Cleverly and Felling this coming season.

I reckon he's a player who will benefit tremendously under Van Gaal, probably more so than all others.

Has that sort of clause been exercised by any other club, ever?
Real Madrid bought Carvajal back from Leverkusen after one year, and Barca bought Bojan back from Roma, but apart from those two I can't remember it ever happening.

I really don't know, are we able to offer him the regular football he needs now to fulfil his potential ? I'm saying this because I think he will/should begin at the apex of a three men midfield and in this role we have too many players ahead of him to give him a fair chance.

Its hard to say. I'm hoping to catch him at a training session next week in LA if he's on the tour. I sense LvG will find a way to make it work if he sees Powell's quality.

If a way could be found to give him enough football and keep him around then I'm all for it . I feel that, in recent times, the loan system has had mixed results for us. Another way could be to get rid of a lot of underperformers clogging up the first team and give those chances to young players like Powell, Lingard and Lawrence, think of it this way; players like Young, Nani, Kagawa etc average maybe one good game in five to ten matches ( you can count in two hands the notable games they have had) so if we got rid of five or so players in that boat I don't think we will suffer too much . If Powell and co can not match or better what we have had from Young and co, then there is always the axe.

Barca didn't buy Bojan back, Roma weren't willing to pay the fee to keep him.

What's with this growing trend of looking to offload young players without even giving them a proper chance

Lets not turn into fecking Chelsea just because we've decided to flex our financial muscle this summer for once.

Its just internet transfer muppets being their usual selves.

He was linked with Hull during January. Sending him to Steve Bruce there could be a good loan. They play good football and he would fit in well to the 3-5-2 system.

They recently signed Ince and Snodgrass, though, and they have Long and Jelavic up front. Aluko isn't bad, either.

There are Prem teams who would give Powell more time, I think. Palace could do with him. The promoted teams, possibly. West Brom are short of bodies. Villa could maybe alternate him with a more defensively solid player for their 3rd CM role that El Ahmadi makes little use of.

I'd hope he could force his way past that plank Jelavic.

If we let him go then seriously...

What the feck is going on with this club letting young players go, will we ever learn?

What are you on about? If we let him go it'll be because it's looking increasingly like he's just not up to much. I know you shouldn't judge a youngster based on one season but I've rarely seen such resoundingly not-promising season from a player.

To be perfectly honest there was a little cluster of signings like this at the end of Fergie's tenure which made little sense to me. Just when our academy's dramatic improvement looked to be ready to pay off, with Januzaj just the first in a new wave of talent, we signed Powell, Henriquez and Zaha. They were all too old/far along in their development to be put in the reserves for any length of time, but none of them (aside from Zaha, possible) had the sort of top-drawer potential to immediately force their way into the first team.

Wilson looks a better and more suitable prospect that Henriquez. Lingard and Lawrence have done much more with their chances than Zaha has since moving from Palace (and their opportunities have been far more modest than his). And although obviously the midfield needs attention at first XI level, in terms of talent knocking on the door I'd much rather just wait another season for Rothwell and Pearson to be ready than put much hope in Powell, who's showing every sign of not being up to scratch.

So I can't fathom those signings, personally. I wish we'd just had more faith in our own kids. The £18m total spent on the three of them could have been saved either to give us a bit more of an edge in our offers for the big first-team signings, or to invest in keeping a steady stream of 15-16 year old foreign talent coming into the academy and keeping us stocked with talent through the youth teams.

And how exactly did you come to this conclusion ? Have you seen him carry Wigan through their UEFA campaign ? Or have you seen his form before his injury and the managerial change ? Just curious here.

We've always bought young players regardless of the academy. That's how Jones, Rafael, Fabio and Smalling came into the first team. Only Fabio really had any significant amount of games in the reserves. So singling out Zaha, Powell and Henriquez is just silly.

I've watched ten or eleven of his games for Wigan throughout the season. A couple of good European games does not constitute 'carrying' their UEFA campaign. We're not even talking MOTM performances here, just decent showings where he scored important goals. Outside of Europe he had maybe three genuinely strong games early in the season, and scored two important goals against Milton Keynes. Other than that, he's been astonishingly poor, and that applies to a good chunk of the season before his injury and Coyle's sacking. Not just in his form, but in his attitude. He regularly seemed completely disinterested on the pitch, even in matches like the FA Cup tie with Arsenal which most players would give their left arm to play in. And there were plenty of reports about a poor attitude and work ethic in training too, which tallies with his fall from favour.

Smalling I'll give you. Jones was a signing on a different level, quality-wise - Blackburn's standout defender in their PL campaign, putting in game-changing performances against the likes of us, Arsenal and City. He was the PL defender to steal that season, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all supposedly having a go for him before we got him. The Da Silvas were a different sort of signing entirely, given that we'd basically had them locked in since they were 16 but couldn't actually sign them till a year later and couldn't play them until they were 18 because of the visa issues. They were the equivalent of the sort of young academy signings I'm talking about, it's just that we never actually managed to get them here.

Of course we've always looked to sign young talented players. But there's a difference between the likes of Phil Jones and Javier Hernandez, not expensive top-drawer signings but still meant to immediately challenge for first team places, and Nick Powell and Angelo Henriquez, who were too good/old for the youth teams but not good/promising enough for the first team. The limbo they've found themselves in is incredibly predictable.

Besides, since the reshaping of our academy (of which Rene Meulensteen's hiring was an important part), it's become much more productive, with a far more consistent yield of talent, and more names coming through which each generation who look like genuine first-team possibilities. So it would have made sense for us to ease back on the 'young, promising' signings and look to our own ranks for that sort of player. I just think we were a bit slow to do that, hence these three strange signings.

There's an argument to be made that Zaha doesn't belong in that category, and was a more 'special' sort of talent. I don't have a strong opinion either way on him really.

He scored half of Wigan's goals in their UEFA campaign, directly helping them win 4 of the 5 points they ended up having. I call that carrying your team. Don't forget that most of the time, he played upfront on his own with poor support. Remember, this is Wigan we are talking about.

Despite playing alone upfront, his injury and his fall from favour with the new manager, he ended up being Wigan's top scorer of the season, outscoring everyone both in the Championship and in Europe. Now, you might say that his overall play could have been better, but writing the lad off is just silly. I don't think many 19 years old players would look better playing on their own upfront for Wigan.

Concerning his attitude and demeanor on the pitch, he certainly has that effortless vibe which people often mistake for being lazy or disinterested. I don't think much should be read into that as players have different styles and should be judged on their end result rather than on whether they run around like headless chickens from the go. In a team such as Wigan and with his injury and slow form recovery, ending up top scorer with significant contributions in Europe while playing in a difficult position uptop on his own indicates that he has done well enough to not be written off already. In the games I have seen, the talent is there for all to see. He certainly needs some guidance and to be tested in the right setup, but he has done enough for us to not give up on him already.

I think people usually forgot that Powell and Henriquez are only 20, two years younger than the likes of Zaha. They still have plenty of times.

needs a preimer league loan this season, won't get enough games at united.

think needs to define his postion too, as it seems like fergie was wrong, he looks far more effective as a number ten then a center midfielder.

Adam Crafton in one his articles said that Powell would've got a chance at United last season had Fergie was still there. I think we'll see him stay here and contribute to the first team.

That is the exact same as Angelo Henriquez. We had and agreement with his club since he was 15/16 but he couldn't join until he turned 18.

Excellent if true, with only Herrera, Cleverley and Fletcher (and Jones I guess), we were looking a little light in CM, so he'd definitely get a fair bit of playing time.
