At United he would be used as a CM. I think we all know that the number 10 role is reserved for Adnan Januzaj.

Moyes says he is planning his squad for 4 or 5 years time, it is a tasty option having Powell and Januzaj through the middle.

I don't know if we actually legally can. But I would re-call Powell in January myself. He's got the legs to do exactly what we need in that position. When he comes back, hopefully he is back for good in our first team.

Does anybody watch Wigan? What's his all round game been like? Touch, passing, awareness and all that.

I see he's scored 7 in 17 for Wigan - not bad considering they've had an up and down season. What position is he playing for them?

Mostly as a number 10, but he had quite a few games as a striker when Holt was injured/not selected.

If we could find him guaranteed first team football in the PL it could be fantastic for us. He could come back here ready to challenge for the first team next summer if he shows he's up to the level of the PL.

He did? Every suggestion I've seen as to his football at Crewe suggested he was a 10 for them.

He played in CM first season and then final season as a 10 because they lacked quality and wanted to take advantage of his goalscoring. Gradi says hes a CM, Sir Alex says hes a CM

given the situation in midfield for us now, moyes should call powell back this january. i reckon he is good enough already.

If West Ham are interested then we should loan him there for the season as part of a deal for Morrison.

Would never happen. Singing their best player but loaning a player to them that only has one Premier league game, madness.

They'd still get the money for Morrison. Plus Nick Powell, who they are interested in taking on loan. Surely its better than just the money?

Anyway, I wasn't really being serious. Don't think we'd move for Morrison just yet anyway.

Let's see how Morrison plays against us on Saturday first. If he has a Ronaldo moment when he played for Sporting against us, then it should be considered

When asked about the January window at the presser today, Moyes said he was looking at the players on loan, Powell, Lingard and Tunniclife.
I think Powell would get some game time if he came back in January. But maybe it's for the best that he remain on loan?
However it would be better if he was playing week to week in midfield, not as a striker.

From everything I hear he has great attacking attributes. Is he actually a quality passer and defensively adept?

Would he get many games if he returned? I'm not sure.
I would love to see him on loan at another Premiership team, someone like Swansea.

Would be a great place for him to go and develop, but I don't think he'd have many starts there.

i think he is ready to challenge for the central midfield spot. he might be playing as a striker at wigan but the idea was him to get playing time there.

The only thing that bothers me about the guys is that he just don't look like a typical striker or attacking midfielder. Perhaps he's too tall? That's my contribution to this thread.

More successful than usual.

Andy Mitten mentioned in his ESPN article that Powell "underwhelmed United coaching staff last year". Surprised by that - he had a bad injury that kept him out for a fair bit.

Lets hope his loan spell has made a difference.

Funny that, as SAF raved about him in his book.

He's doing really well at Wigan to be fair. I'm not too sure what his best position is but maybe he can perform a similar role to Ramsay at Arsenal for us? So basically playing alongside Carrick (with a number 10 in front of them) but with a bit more license to get into the box.

In fairness, raving about somebody as a talent is not the same as thinking they are ready to play a role in United's first team. He's clearly very gifted on the ball, but his application is often hit and miss from what I've seen of him.

Even at Wigan he's been a little bit careless in possession, but he's technically gifted and has that mentality where he's willing to try the outrageous things- a bit like Zaha- you don't want to over-coach it out of them but as they get more experience and their decision making improves they will be far far better for it.

No point in getting him back in January - we need some better, established options there plus Powell's playing behind the striker at Wigan it seems, he wouldn't get many games under his belt here in this position and I'm not sure whether he's ready for the pure CM job. He's getting games at Wigan so it's a very fruitful loan imo.

I don't think he's ready to challenge for a cm spot. How many games has he played in that position anyway? He hasn't played there for Wigan this season, he didn't play there for the u21s last season and he didn't play there for Crewe two seasons ago. Various England youth sides have used him in more advanced roles as well. I'm aware of what Gradi and Sir said about him when he signed for us but that was a year and a half ago and since then he's arguably taken a positional step forward on the pitch rather than backwards. If Moyes sees him as a future midfielder he needs to recall him from Wigan and loan him out to someone who'll actually play him there.

Strange player to define is Powell, he's talented but not one of those players you can say 100% will have the dynamism to run our team in a 2 man midfield.. he's abit languid and Lampardish, but I'll need to see him more in a deeper role when he does return to the fold.

Going on loan is good, but I really would've liked to have seen him regularly played at CM to see if he has what it takes to play there. We have alot of players in midfield who don't really behave like central midfielders in that they don't come deep to knit the play and help out our defenders to bring the ball out and play it through the thirds.

Cleverley is one of the few but lacks the quality to go with it.

He signed for us on the back of a season in League Two.

He was always going to need time and patience to settle and develop. Going through the levels with a championship loan and perhaps a PL loan next year might be a possibility.

But the key is...he was signed on the back of a season in the lowest professional league in the country.

He's made for a proper 433, I reckon. The Lampard comparisons are spot on. He'll score for fun in a free role.

His got to play the attacking point of a three. I fell that will be his best position. I can see a 'who's better' Powell v Barkley debabte to take place for a good 5 years.

I don't believe that at all.

Is Powell anywhere near as good in tight spaces? Barley is quite superb under pressure. His ball retention is very impressive.

Maybe in terms of effort? Grant Holt once said that he is "even a worse trainer than me", and I've heard similar reviews, labeling him the "worst trainer". That is not a good sign. Many people compare him to Frank Lampard, and I can see why, but I've never heard anyone label him a poor trainer. And to be frank, I don't think he is talented enough to be one of the best, if he does not train as one of the best. I'm also surprised to see how much hype there is surrounding him compared to Jessie Lingard. Its beyond me that people believe that a player that averages 19,6 passes in the Championship with a success percent of 67 (both well below team average) are ready to be a central midfielder for Man Utd. He lacks intensity and off ball movement to be a central midfielder. He could turn out to be a good centre forward, though.

But probably not at Manchester United.

Have you watched him much this year?
