I don't think he'd get in ahead of Hundredstone or Livermore in midfield, which means he'd mostly be picked up front. Premier League exposure is always a good thing, but I'd like to see him at a club that would play him in the middle.

They don't really play a 4-4-2 though so the No10 is going to end up playing more as a third midfielder. That's a role I think he'd excel in and really the role that Powell looks made for. At this stage I think getting game time in the PL is crucial and as he's only playing up top as it stands for Wigan this move certainly wont push him further forward.

It's Steve Bruce.

I'll have no second thoughts about sending any of our youngsters on loan to his team. Also, he's already established a solid defense and having a goal threat like Powell is going to make them a bit more stronger. I can see this being beneficial for all the parties.

In any case it's lot better than bringing him back to United to either a) compete with Rooney, Welbeck and Kagawa to play in a position that he excels the most and is at his strongest or b) play him in a 2 man midfield and watch our own fans whine about how he is unable to dictate the game or how clueless he in a positional sense.

This is pretty much exactly my thoughts. Every minute he gets now on a pitch either as part of a midfield 3 or as part of a front 2 behind the striker in the top flight is only good for United. Bruce is one of footballs good guys and still a friend of United's. Should be one of the first places we go with young players who need a loan spell.

A premier league loan is ideal...though a full season in the Championship and a stint for a PL club next season would also be just as useful.

Surely he's quite comfortable and settled at Wigan. I don't see many teams using him and a flat out central midfielder right now either.

He's a better forward than Danny fecking Graham, so even if he doesn't start in midfield - he'll start up front.

Don't Hull need to cancel one of their current loans, or make one a permanent deal, before this can go through?

I'd be very happy if this deal goes through. Regular PL football at this stage would be brilliant for him.

Had heard he was back, but clearly not. Just equalized for Wigan in their FA Cup match. His scoring rate is impressive for them, looking forward to seeing if he can make the step up. Still ridiculously young.

Must have been off the bench because I didn't see him in their starting line-up.

They've been playing him off the striker, haven't they? No wonder his goal scoring has been impressive.

if Powell could play in midfield alongside a Carrick or Fletcher he could be a good option....

between Carrick and Fletcher I doubt we will get more than 2/3 goals the rest of the season and Powell definitely has that knack of scoring

I'd have him back tbh and get him as much game time as we can in the middle at this stage. fecking looks like he's going to be an amazing player.

WE GOT THE POWELL!

Didn't Cleverley also spend multiple loan spells banging in goals? 15 or so goals he got for Watford, playing in a similar position to Powell. If he could spend time at a Prem club gaining some experience playing a slightly deeper role, I think it would be beneficial to both him and us.

Scored 11 in 33 for Watford, if I remember correctly.

We need to stop trying to turn attacking midfielders or strikers into central midfielders, not everyone is like Scholes.

Conversely, the fact that he's got a killer shot on him, and looks good for 10 goals a season doesn't mean he has to be a no10. Much as none of our current crop seem aware of this, midfielders are allowed to score goals - I seem to remember a certain Bryan Robson getting us 10 a season in his pomp.
You may say that type of pure goal scoring centre-mid doesn't exist anymore, and certainly modern examples I could have used, such as Gerrard and Lampard have played in quite advanced roles at times, but there's no doubt they are essentially midfielders, if quite attack minded ones.

From what I've seen of Powell (which admittedly isn't loads), he has the look of a midfielder about him. If (like half the world and his dog these days) he's set on being a number 10, then we may as well get rid, as we've players queuing up for that.

For what it's worth, I think similarly about Barkley - I don't think he'd need "adapting" into a midfielder much at all. What would be interesting to know is how Powell would be doing in a similar environment - it's not inconceivable that he could be winning similar plaudits. If we aren't going to get him back to OT for now, I really think he needs a Premier League loan.

From what I've seen he looks too good for the Championship. I would honestly have him in our squad for the rest of the season as it's not as if he even looked out of place in the few games he had last year, certainly massive potential there.

I think expecting him to play for us in a midfield two is probably expecting a bit much at this moment and who gets dropped/shifted if he plays at the tip of a three?

His ability to score classy goals will take him far. Only 19 too. Seems our most exciting young player after Januzaj.

Good post and agreed. There are some lunatics who don't want Barkley for the same 'midfield two' reason.

Hull could be a good move for him after this season possibly if they stay up and Bruce stays? I know it's Moyes now but i'm sure you'll still have that type of relationship with old players of SAF and isn't Livermore only a loan for this year?
