Nick Powell

Come on though, the first one was a hit and hope but the two others, and especially the last, were absolutely amazing finishes.

It's quite possibly the best hattrick I've ever seen from a player.

An amazing hat-trick no doubt. Jóhann is a good shooter of the ball but my point is that despite being that he doesn't score a lot of goals. Not yet at least. He's only 22 and can get better at that. Nick Powell might be similar. It's not just about how good you are at shooting the ball, it's a matter of getting into positions and picking the right moments to shoot. Many different factors.

From that video alone you could say that any player could do what Powell did in training but we've got more to base his skill on that just that single shot.

Considering he got 16 for Crewe as a 17-year-old I'd say the whole random-Icelandic-player-who-possesses-a-powerful-shot-but-doesn't-score-much comparison is a bit far-fetched to begin with.

I wouldn't read anything into his not even being on the bench for England. After the operation and subsequent thin pre-season he'll still be far away from his best at this stage.

Don't think it's a slight on his talent, or potential.. for better for worse, the England u-21s team seems to be picked on experience and there were players with plenty of Championship and even Premiership experience ahead of him at central midfield.

Yeah, no doubt, let's hope he will get some experience at Wigan now.

Came on after 55mins yesterday in Wigan's 2-0 away at Leicester. Anyone have any info on where he played/how he did etc?

Two or three fans on their twitter said Wigan immediately improved as soon as he came on and was one of their better players. Also played in CM as he came on. Let's hope he starts in the Europa League too.

Not bad - he played for us in the CL too didn't he? So from League One to a CL and EL in a season!

He's not having a great time up front from what I have seen

Nothing really working for him so far but not surprising since he's basically playing as a target man

He's not involved at all, apart from chasing down the ball when it goes to the keeper who inevitably passes his around him.

He isn't playing very well but he's pretty isolated upfront on his own.

Coyle's Wigan is unrecognisable to Martinez's Wigan.

Looks pretty pissed. Seen him complain midway through this half. Poor hold-up play - looks very uncomfortable. Conditions aren't helping him out either.

To be fair, playing in European football with a Championship level squad is a big ask.
I've seen a fair bit of Wigan in the championship and there really is a big difference.

Probably his best asset is coming onto the ball from a deeper position and popping up in pockets of space breaking into the box so playing him like this when he's not at all natural with his back to goal seems a bit pointless but its all experience I suppose

He played up front for the u21s last season. Not ideal as it seems we see him more as a CM, but better to be playing then sitting on the bench.

Yeah he played up front but in a completely different system where he had a lot more freedom and support. His decision making has been poor tonight but he's obviously rusty after being out for so long. I could see him being subbed fairly soon.

Moved to right wing after 65 mins hopefully hell do better a bit deeper

How did he get on there?

Had couple of good runs towards their box after moving to right but his control let him down. There was another occasion when he was in lot of space towards right in advanced position on right but lost control and defenders got back. Not a good game for him overall but he didn't play the match in his preferred position and to add to that Wigan weren't setup in a way to help him.

Very rusty, which is to be expected. I hope Coyle doesn't intend to use him upfront on a regular basis.

Played out of position, but he was fairly useless when he got the ball, which shouldn't totally depend on position.

Hopefully he gets more games in midfield going forward.

As the main striker? That surprises me as it's at odds with what we've been told his position will be.

He has played there a fair bit for the u21 side...I think mainly at the time because we were without a striker...Adnan has done the same. I see quite a bit of the u21 and more often than not he is not playing in midfield where he is supposedly earmarked for.

An assist for Wigan. Sent in corner for first goal.

Assist stats are shit but it seems to be very important to many...
