NHL 2009-10 Season

Holy crap, the Rangers have scored 14 goals in their last 5 periods - this right after a long, barren streak of 172 minutes without a goal. What's really amazing is Gaborik only has 1 of them (granted he's assisted about 6 of them)...

Just like to mention my sheer joy at seeing Chris Stewart finally beginning to reach his potential

Its nice to see how the team has begun to rebuild. Stastny, Wolski, Cumiskey, Stewart, Duchene, O'Reilly, Galiardi, Quincey...all 25 or under. There is even a quality young d-man named Ryan Wilson (maybe not the Giggsy of hockey, but a shared name is enough to celebrate). Although he isn't the most graceful skater

Evidently there is a kid who plays for Boston College named Shattenkirk that was drafted by Colorado in '06 that is suppose to be quality as well. Maybe its a reach, but has anyone seen him play? There is another defensive that goes to Boston Uni named Colby Cohen that is suppose to be pretty good as well. I think both Cohen and Shattenkirk will join the Avalanche next year

Here's hoping that they are good enough so that Clark or even Hannan become surplus to requirements. Its not that they are bad players, its just that both are being paid about $4 million dollars a year, which is a handicap with the salary cap. Well, at least we aren't paying Jovo 6 million

Nooooo you are a great fan Paz, as a AVS fan I think you are doing a good job:D

hehee....

so forgive my ignorance but are they doing well in the league? I tried to understand, seems they are in a nw league but also some bigger version of it too....cant get my head round it!

3rd in the western conference.
The league is split into the east and west conferences. Each conference is split into 3 divisions.
Colorado are currently first in the northwest division but behind Chicago and San Jose in points which puts them in 3rd overall in the conference.

Not NHL but feck me that is a brutal elbow

One of the, if not THE worst elbow I've ever seen.. Disgusting. I know he's just a kid, but I hate the little shit already. Watched a pre-WJC friendly game between Canada and Sweden a few days before the tournament and he did this:

Not as brutal obviously but still a disgusting cheap-shot. How the hell did this guy become a Canadian captain in the first place?

The thing was, there weren't many boys on the team who were skips, plus he was a returning player... However, that doesn't exclude one from punishment, I hope he's banned for the season, playoffs included, time to make a stand against this type of thing in the game at a grassroots level.

If the Q don't suspend him long, the CHL have the right to over-rule... It's happened before here, when a Mooseheads player only got a game for a cheap sucker punch on Brad Richards so many years ago, the CHL extended it to 5 games.

Edit: Looks like they heard me

He's gone for the season? I guess that's fair in a way.. Still he could have killed the other kid.

bruins in a free-fall. my hockey weenee has shriveled up.

Come draft day I bet it grows to epic proportions though! :D

Speaking of trades..Where do you guys see Kovalchuk ending up? At this point it seems like he won't be resigning with the Thrashers. Boston is a team I could see signing him with all the picks at their disposal.

Helluva player.

You said it, however the rumor is Atlanta will post him on the trade market, with 4-5 piece being required for a move.

It breaks down:

- 2 A level prospects
- 2 B/B- level prospects OR 2 active NHLers
- 1st/2nd round draft pick

Alot to ask, might throw off any trade.

Draft day though mate, the Leafs pick on top of yours, quite a deal if you get 2 top prospects.

That, or get tricky and make some trades.

i guess so. hopfully they can turn things around. AS, i know you're lovin' it :D. amazing difference from last season's team that topped the east. did kessel make that much difference? they started off well this season and had to endure some injuries along the way, as everyone does. i don't hear anyone asking for Claude Julien's head yet. i'ts buffalo tomorrow.

WILL throw of any trade. They will have to lower their demands if they don't want to let him go for free. Maybe something along the lines of what they got for Hossa from the Pens.

I could see the Hawks making a move for him for a short term run for the Stanley Cup. Imagine him there.. They'd be unstoppable.

You'd have to think Versteeg & Sharp would be gone, Ladd maybe? Chicago have ALOT of pieces to deal but the vast majority of them are important pieces of their own Stanley Cup puzzle.

I don't know if fecking with the team is going to help, Pittsburgh made positive tinkering... There's not too much Chicago can do to improve this team without sacrifice.

If the Thrashers win 7 of the next 10 I think he'll stay. The East is weak and almost any team not from Toronto can still make the playoffs. The Thrashers just need a hot streak and they'll be in. They should sign him and acquire a couple of players to help them mount a decent playoff run. Lehtonen is due back soon too, so they could really turn it around in a matter of a fortnight which I think will change Kovalchuk's tune a little. I think for him it's not so much about the money but about having a shot at winning.

Can someone please remind me what it's like to see your NHL team win? The Oilers have obviously tanked the season, too many lost games through injury to even make a solid run at any point this year. The way we are going, we'll even lose the weighted lottery and not get Taylor Hall.

I'm not going to blame the management, as they've had the hands tied by crappy contracts that Kevin Lowe tied half the team to after the 2006 cup run, but once we can shift half of them away and start again I'll be pleased.

Do you think someone would want Horcroft as a rental on deadline day??

I agree there. I think he'll probably be staying too, but he might be fed up with the organisation loosing quality players and never being able to build a true contender or even a solid play-off team.
But it seems to me their future is brighter than in a long time now with players like Bogosian, Enström, Kane, Peverley etc not to mention them having a bit of a Russian colony over there.

Lehtonen back soon huh? Such an amazing talent, but I'm beginning wonder if he's a Hargreaves.

Wow, trades all over the league. They're starting early this year.

The Flames must be desperate to get rid of Jokinen if they're willing to take Higgins and Kotalik.

The Jokinen - Higgins - Kotalik deal (if it goes through at all) must be part of another deal to make any sense at all.
Not Kovalchuk, but some other center, Carter maybe.

Agreed. Otherwise, they're getting shafted. Jokinen and Higgins are both FA's at the end of the year, but Kotalik has another 2 years at 3 million per - he's not worth that. Talent-wise, the Rangers get the better deal. Salary cap-wise is the same. Hopefully the Flames do have something in the works or this looks like a bad trade for them.

Of course, it might not go through at all. This is quite weird.

If anything I think that for once Burke has done a good job, whilst not exactly improving the Leafs, they certainly get the better end from the Flames. I know the Oilers are brutal, and the Flames have owned us this year, but come on they've traded down further for me.

As for any hope of the Oilers trading away, we've got no chance. Half the team are on the Kevin Lowe fantasy contracts, whilst the others the only trade assest we have has fractured his hand. We can't be far away from a league record soon, for the number of games lost through injury... It's been a crazy season for us Oilers.

Well it went through after all but no word yet on something more.
If nothing else happens then the Flames have been shafted. They're no better off at C now than they were before.

A win for the Oilers...... It took me two or threee hours to actually believe I wasn't dreaming it.. How bad are Carolina, I'd be ashamed to if I were them.

Our run for the cup starts here... the 2015 cup that is....

I agree. Players like Hagman and Stajan are a dime a dozen, while Phaneuf is an amazing talent who hasn't yet put it all together. I read somewhere no d-man in the NHL has scored as much as him in his first four seasons since Paul Coffey. Players like that don't grow on trees.

And the trade with NYR didn't make sense at all even if they are putting some mega trade together.. I actually don't believe that at all, because Calgary don't have the assets right now (even less now). I think the Sutters fecked up.

Leafs up 3-0 against NJ after 2.

The leafs win tonight is only going to add more hype to this trade session from Burke, they weren't great and New Jersey were even worse. Give it a few games & i'm sure the leafs will get back into their typical form. [/pessimism]

EDIT

It's Oduya, Bergfors, Cormier + first for Kovalchuk and Salmela (didn't he just arrive from NJD?)... Wow, will the Devils have a couple of great left wingers now.. two dangerous lines and Kovy is deadly on the point on the PP.

Still a good return for a rental that, but it sucks for them losing such an amazing player. Oduya was very good last season and is on the SWE Olympics team but I like Bergfors and Cormier (well..) more. Though I think Devils prospects Josefson and Tedenby (if he can overcome the size issue) can become better still.

Relocation rumors will probably start right about now.

Wow, ATL lost in that deal, but it looks like they put out a price and someone came calling.
