NHL 2009-10 Season

Over on a couple of Oiler sites I post on and on a couple of general ones they seem to agree, with the view, that the Oilers got more for Ryan Smyth than the Thrashers for Kovachuk. How they let that happen I don't know. I'm guessing that he's only a rental for the Devils and he's KHL bound next year, or other wise they'd have pushed for more.

Also as much as I don't like the guy, my condolences go out to Brian Burke and his family on the loss of his son.

I don't think he'll go to the KHL... unless it's for crazy money. He rejected a deal to become one of the top earners in the NHL for the Thrashers. I think he wants to be at a successful NHL club first and foremost.

He is a bit of a misfit at Jersey though isn't he? I mean he doesn't strike me Lemaire type of player to put it lightly.

Epic fail by Toronto and Gustavsson yesterday btw. I think it's so hard to be successful at that club. It's like England at the World Cup, so much media pressure and scrutiny. Seems like it's easy for players to loose confidence there if things aren't going right, especially goalies. Gustavsson seems to have become progressively worse as the season has gone on. I think Jonas made a mistake when he signed there, but I can see why he did it with former Swedes like Salming and Sundin being treated like kings there. Lifting the cup as their starting goalie would make him immortal.

Maybe I just overrated him. His rebound control really needs work.

Kristjan - you get my mail about the other league?

Bloody hell, the Canadiens traded a 2nd rounder for Dominic Moore. He's not worth that.

At this point we're trying to spark together a line-up, it's logical, considering he has a 2 way contract.

I think we also have the rights to someones second rounder anyways.

yeah it's half Canadiens, half Hamilton Bulldogs at the moment. The injury bug struck early with Markov and has never left.

Rumour has it there is a deal in place - Hamrlik and Yanick Weber for Alexander Frolov. Maybe that's why they called up PK Subban. Makes a refreshing change from the usual Vinny rumours.

So having spent the last 2 weeks happily stopping up to watch the Olympic's it's back to watching the NHL... Why does that as an Oiler fan sound like an encouragement to get to bed early rather than stopping up till god knows when watching sport???

Interesting though, we got a 2nd round pick from the Pred's for Grebs yesterday. The total clear out and rebuild starts now, if only some of our top end no hitters could be traded we might just get some where once more.

Any Phoenix fans on here? Wait, do Phoenix fans actually exist?

If there are any of you out there, I was wondering about Mueller, I hear he is just as frustrating as Wolski. And what about this Porter guy...I've never heard of him.

Don't get why we got rid of a LW, which we need, and got two centers. O'Reilly hasn't exactly been playing that great lately (at least not as good as at the beginning of the year), but I don't see the point in bringing in two centers who have much more potential then current talent when we have 3 centers who all have considerable potential.

Richter, what do you think about the trade?

Not seen Mueller much since his rookie season when I liked him as a player, he does have skill and a good shot but yeah heard the same about him as you. That he fails to show up quite often. He can play on the wing though, he is playing with Duchene tonight. The lack of natural left wingers is indeed quite worrying and with Yip and David Jones out a long time right wingers with a scoring touch is lacking too. I'm worried that a big slump is coming up tbh.

And Porter is predicted to be a 3rd/4th line player in the future, just what the Avs need....

Has Sacco moved Stewart to the LW?

I have been fearing a slump for sometime. I expected this team to be in the basement all year, and being in playoff contention has been a real pleasent surprise.

Even if we do tank, I would be really proud of most of the players this season. There are a few I am really dissapointed in, and I think we have some real good, young, core talent. That being said, we need to continue to rebuild next year.

BTW Richter, have you seen or heard anything about either Shattenkirk or Cohen play for Boston College. They are both defensemen and they play on the same line.

I have heard Shattenkirk is a great prospect, but I haven`t heard much about Cohen.

I don't know how reliable this is as I heard it on the radio today and haven't bothered to check for any verification...

Mueller is supposedly very religious and is contemplating giving up the game to go into priesthood or whatever it is they do. That's why his numbers are declining as his heart isn't into it. Probably bollocks but fun speculation.

Avs score! Heard that priesthood rumor too but it seems way too far fetched.

2-2 now. Mueller scores on the PP.

fecking trade deadline was WEAK

That's the salary cap era. Sure it has made the league much more competitive but the former big spenders at deadline are too scared of ending up with a veteran 5-6 milion dollar flop they cant get rid off. It's all about draft these days.

I'll have to pull my finger out and stroll 2 blocks up the road to watch the Capitals training sessions.
I've seen Ovechin in the elevator there but have never watched the Caps sessions.
one of these days....
btw, I much prefer Olympic ice hockey to NHL hockey. must be the ads and fighting.....

what do you all prefer?

I'm still coming to terms with the fact the Oilers made a trade with the Flames.... Why after all these years?

Still it looks like the Oilers have a plan to tank next season as well. I'm also worried that we'll trade our 1st rounder away, and knowing the way the Oilers trade, we'll get a 5th and 6th rounder in 2030 or something in return....

Hmmm don't think I prefer one over the other. The Olympic hockey are special because it's a rare event. I'm not a fan of fighting either just feels like a waste of time these days. I love the yank ads though, only food and car commercials all the time:D

The Oilers need to get rid of Steve Tambellini, I doubt he has clue about what he is doing....

That leaves us with Kevin Lowe again. Great as he is, his track record isn't great, it was he who gave all the over priced contracts after the cup run. It was he who got us nothing for Pronger and Smyth. Perhaps with Katz rather than the EIG as his boss he may be in a better position I don't know.

The problem is that if we did get rid of Tambo, who's going to take over? The Oilers have moved out of the old boys club of late with Tambo and Quinn, but if we rid ourselves of Tambo and Lowe, I fear to a point that we'll bring in someone like Messier, unproven and so much a legend that he'll tarnish his heritage like Lowe has to a point with the fans.

Yeah getting a GM that is capable of building a team in the cap era isn't easy. The Oilers have some good prospects though unlike the Leafs so not everything is lost yet. And it's supposed to be a deep draft again this year. What do you guys really need apart from getting rid of some of the big contracts?

At least you're not stuck with D. Sutter who for some unknown reason seems to be trying to turn the Flames into the Maple Leafs.

Must have been a bit of a shock for poor Iginla after the Olympics to be playing without a good center again.

AVS are still stuck with Tucker. Former Maple Leafs players are worse than cancer;)

I don't know Sutter seems to be doing a good job in Calgary, but I would say that wouldn't I? being an Oiler fan.

Regardless of the Flames not making the play-off's which they should do, but it's touch and go right now. You will still have had a good season, finishing above the Oilers and owning us in the Battle of Alberta yet again. You even won the fan site battle this year between Calgary Puck and Oilfans.

Back to the Oilers, and what the hell are they playing at? Blanking the Devils and winning two in a row isn't what we need to do right now. It brings us within 4 points of the Leafs, and close to losing the race for Taylor Hall.

I think every team tries to win their games. Though, as a fan it can be annoying watching the team suddenly start winning at the end of the season. I bet Carolina fans don't love their sudden change of form either.

We (well some of us fans) were at least looking forward to the Oilers winning something this year after what we've put up with on the ice, and that of course was the first pick from the draft lottery. Yet we may end up losing that as well as all the games on the ice, well most of the games on the ice.

Ah, the good old Penguins strategy. Tank for the first pick. Not cool. :p

Couldn't agree more, it isn't cool, but being in the position we are in, we've got to have something to look forward to, mind you the Oilers draft record over the past few years haven't exactly been great either.

The future looks bright for Edmonton now. Hall/Seguin + Eberle, MPS, Cogliano, Omark, Lander etc..

I'm a huge fan of Pääjärvi-Svensson and believe he'll be a 1st liner in a couple of years. Still can't believe he fell to 10th.

It may look bright on paper, but then Robbie Schremp fell down the rankings very late on, and look what he didn't do at the Oilers... Cogs isn't exactly up to much right now, and a fair few Oilers fans would happily trade him.

Saying that if things do pan out as they do on paper I agree we have an exciting few years ahead with a team that can do more than challenge for 8th place and a new arena hopefully.
