NHL 2009-10 Season

Anyone want to see Calgary make the play-offs?

Nope, here's why:

They've fecked themselves over with a poorly assembled team post-stanley cup appearence with long contracts for players who didn't deserve them, this INCLUDES Jerome Iginla, who at one point was easily top 5 in the NHL, but now has stumbled into the abyss of players who once were superstars cashing it in.

If you look at their contract situation:

Not alot of room for improvement.

This team needs a facelift, signing Stajan for 3 years was not a good start.

In terms of talent, pavel bure has to be up there. He had more talent than kovalev.

All he did was pick the neutral zone, before 2-line pass was eradicated he was the master at straddeling the center line, his speed was amazing.

That's very true and what makes it worse was the most hated rivals the Oilers had done exactly the same thing previously. Not to learn from them is a costly mistake. The Oilers are in the position they are in today because of exactly the same thing. Whilst this years draft isn't meant to be to deep, the talent at the top is good. Can the Flames be sure to reap such a dividend if they find themselves in this position? No, the Oilers are going to be very lucky.

Hell no, I think I'd rather see Toronto win the Stanely Cup than that...... Finishing 9th is always perfect for Calgary.. I'm feeling even more spiteful today towards the the Flames today, having gone through the good times watching "Boys on the Bus" last night, reminded me of Smiths own goal in the 86 play-off's.

You must be from Edmonton saying that...

No one outside of 416/905 wants to see the Leafs anywhere near the Stanley Cup.

So many bad decisions by Sutter(s). I can't bring myself to feel sorry for them.

Well technically I'm from Salford, in England. However my hockey heart belongs to the Oilers. I dare say I don't want to see Toronto anywhere near the Cup, but I'd rather have them over the Flames any day.

Tampa Bay are playing a lot worse than they should with that roster. Seems like they could be picking top 3 again this year. Stamkos, Hedman and now they'll probably get another highly touted youngster like Cam Fowler. Not a bad foundation to build on for the future that.

I don't really believe in the concept of "tanking", but some teams obviously profited from a couple of years of playing terrible hockey. Like Pittsburgh, Chicago and now Tampa Bay.

I think the Lightning could become lethal if they would just get a decent goalie.

Seems like Tochet and Lawton are out in the summer.

Once they find a suitor to finally get a good deal for Vinny they're in good shape... He's played good since the Olympic break but they need to drop him... The thing was, getting rid of Brad Richards seemed to be the downfall of the team, given the fact they didn't change much of the team.

Mind you, Brad Richards should have kept his dick in his pants as opposed to sleeping around and shagging teammates girls.

The question is just who would like to take on that huge contract. Sather? :D

I've watched the Lightning quite a lot this year and even if his stats are decent Vinny just isn't the same player as he used to be. Might have something to do with that shoulder (I think?) injury but he's just so soft nowadays. I hate that in big bodied players. What a shame. He was so awesome before.

Wow, never heard about that before. Who's girl did he sleep with?

Yes AVS are in the play-offs. Bring on the Sharks!

What a great job by Sacco and the players. Expected to finish dead last, and even though we were fighting for first for most of the year, making the playoffs is one hellava achievement

Anderson needs a rest though.

Éric Perrin, who I think left for Atlanta that off-season, Brad Richards never recovered in the locker room with alot of players which sparked his dea lto Dallas.

MIKE MODANO & JERE LEHTINEN!! I feckING LOVE YOU GUYS.. What a finish tonight.. WOW

well...the Bs get three shorties on the same F'kn power play and earn a playoff spot. they were very tough in the last week or so...the key being keeping rask in goal. hopefully he'll be their long term answer between the pipes.

oh...and the habs back in on the heels of an overtime loss. (;) AS)

Rangers @ Flyers today to decide who gets the great honor of losing to the Capitals in the first round. Of course you never know what'll happen (seeing as the Rangers almost beat the Caps last year). Should be a good game. I'm shitting it... Callahan got hurt again too, which doesn't help our chances.

BTW, are there any Flames fans here? Here I thought Jokinen was the best player we were getting in the deal with the Flames and it turns out that Brandon Prust has been amazing. Our 4th line which consists of Shelley - Anisimov - Prust has been absolutely fantastic the past 10 games or so - easily been our best line. But yea, Prust has been one of those guys that gives his all every shift and he's really not too bad of a player, so I'm a bit surprised the Flames were willing to give him up.

i'll be rooting for the rangers today. i hate the flyers.

B's end the regular season with a win over caps.

Home ice doesnt mean that much but it does mean something. It's all about Game 2 though imo, seems like it always is in the best of 7

ya think? B's won the season series 4-2.

oh...i keep forgetting to ask...since you've been to the crosby home have you seen the basement laundry area they show the guys shooting pucks into the old dryer on that commercial?

B's limped late, I do believe if there's a split in the first 2 games then Boston can take it 6 or 7, but I can't look past Miller's season buckling under the pressure, I think Buffalo wins all 3 home games they play in this series.

And yeah i've seen it, they have all his old road hockey shafts too perched up on the wall with nails.

As Alex stated that's how I see that series run out

Just as the Oilers season of shame comes to an end with a shocking 2-7 reverse to the Ducks, we Oiler fans felt it couldn't get any worse.

Exclusive: Souray wants out of Edmonton - sportsnet.ca WAP

Sheldon utters the words most players seem to be saying right now, I want a trade. Now this is quite a damaging article to the Oilers and if it's picked up by the media else where it's going to lead to further problems for the Oilers in trying to attract better players.

However if he wants out, let him go and unlike with the Pronger trade, lets get something worth our while back for him.

I'd like to see the Blackhawks make the final, and my heart says pick the Sens as there opponents, but it isn't going to be so. I want to see the cup back in Canada, but I can't really see it, and out of the teams left in from there, the Sens are the best option in terms of dislike.

However, I think we may see a Blackhawks v Caps final, with the Caps taking the Penguins in the Eastern final in 7. Meanwhile in the West, Chicago will make short work of the final and rest up. Not sure on who'll win said final, but it will be a good one.

I'd like to see Chicago do well, good young team, lots of firepower, you have to figure they can run and gun with anyone. That being said, you also can't look past Detroit who is hiding like a snake in the grass. I just wish both of those teams had better goaltending

Can't really see the cup coming back up North this season... Vancouver would seem to have the best chance, but there have to be big questions over their Playoff grit and Luongo, who has been pretty shite since the Olympics

Weren't Edmonton in the Cup final a few years ago? What happened?

Just like Calgary, got tied down with contracts and didnt replace the out with adequite in.

Tampa Bay is going through the same scheme now as well.

To be fair though it wasn't aided by Mrs Pronger telling her husband he was moving from Edmonton. The one true quality player we had, left, replaced with prospects and as Anderson said, a management team who threw crazy contracts at second and third line players. They'd drafted quite well, but if I'm being honest the coaching team had been lucky to get us to the finals, we rode our luck with a red hot netminder, who then got injured in the finals which I think cost us in the end. The coaching team just wasn't good enough. They were replaced last year, and yes the team finished last which is worse than before, but this year, we've probably lost more games through injury than any other team, on top of not being good enough.

Perhaps had we won that final, which we could have done, we may not find ourselves in this position, I think like many teams with a rich history, that
that history is proving to be a burden on the team and once they break through and win the cup, Edmonton will develop as a team. However, right now, Edmonton doesn't seem to be able to keep hold of it's stars and it's becoming increasingly clear that apart from the weather, distance and size of the club, players don't want to play because of the poor management. The whole club is in a mess.

The one bright note is that we did win the draft lottery, which is about the only thing we could win with it being weighted, but it wouldn't shock me to see us in the lottery again next year. This team needs re-building from top to bottom. However, I'd still rather be an Oiler than a Flames fan.

Wasn't there some story about Pronger getting a female reporter pregnant and his wife finding out about it? Isn't that the real reason he wanted out, quickly?

The Oilers have made far too many poor and costly decisions recently... although Dustin Penner looks like he may be paying off. Too much young talent that looks like its going nowhere. And I never understood breaking the bank to sign Khabibulin when there was little wrong with the much more economical Roloson.

Don't get even get me started on their blue line.

Except with 2-3 additions (inc a goalie and a proper defenseman) I think Tampa has a shot at being contender next year.

Their top three of St Louis, Lecavalier and Stamkos are up there in terms of tallent.

I can't decide between a Blackhawks - Capitals final or rematch of last years finals. Either one would make for great viewing I'm sure, but I hope its Hawks - Caps meself. They're the only two teams I can imagine myself actively watching these playoffs.

I'm still pretty bummed by the Rangers losing out :( I just wish not making the playoffs would be enough for us to get rid of Sather. That, sadly, will not be the case. Here's for hoping Nino Neidereitter drops to the Rangers at pick 10..

That's what I was alluding too by mentioning Mrs Pronger. It was get out of town or else I leave and he'd have huge problems with a rather messy divorce. So, he had his "I want a trade" announcement made while he was sunning himself on the beach in Mexico.

Penner has been a work in progress, I don't think MacT got the best out him, not that MacT got the best out of anyone really. I for one can't understand how MacT was touted as being a top line coach. Yes, prior to the CBA the Oilers were never going to do anything, too small a budget to match the richer clubs. However we always finished 8th or 9th, but MacT just didn't do it as a coach, I think he was lucky to get us to the Stanley Cup, and he bagged himself a handsome contract extention afterwards.

That was the biggest mistake, I think we've drafted plenty of talent and even traded for good young talent, but they hit the Oilers that's it the development stops. Penner could have scored 30 goals a year for sure, but wasn't treated or used properly, Robbie Schremp just didn't fit in with the coaches and his move to the Island will ignite his career. How anyone could have given Horcroft the contract he did I don't know. We've not had a genuine first line centre now for at least 2 years.

As for the blue line, I scratch my head, because we've got genuine talent on it, and yet that talent has been coached out of them. Gilbert has shown in the later part of the season how good he is, Smid is a great player, but very erratic. I don't know what will happen with the blue line over the summer, it could work, but then again it's more than likely to crash and burn.

Netminding is a mystery. We let Roloson go to the Island, and bring in Khabi on a bigger contract, but with an injury problem. However, goaltending at the Oilers has been a long term issue. The last genuine netminder we had was Cujo, Salo was OK till the faux pas at the Olympics, we then ran with the 3 netminders which didn't work. So we end up where we are today, with two talented guys, but neither have substancial experience in the NHL and possibly a year or two away from the fans being comfortable with either of them starting. It hasn't helped either of them with the blue line playing the way it has.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for the Oilers, but it may take another last place and another first pick before we start to see any progress in the NHL.

What a win, and what effort by Galiardi at the end

The Sharks are still massive favourites, but still a good game and a great finish.
Kudos to Quincey, he played excellent. Even though I am an Avs fan, I was pretty annoyed with the commentators constantly talking about how young our team is. It makes for a great story, but feck me its annoying...

Also happy for Wolski and the Coyotes

All in all, 4 great results on the first day of the 2010 playoffs IMO

Hope it continues tommorow... My Habs need to show up.

So many dissapointed home fans, I wonder when the last time this happened was?
