NFL Thread 2013-14

http://nesn.com/2014/02/report-patriots-want-second-round-pick-in-ryan-mallett-trade/

Would be a good move by the Patriots this, his is certainly not our future quarterback, time to trade him in for a draft pick and see if we can get a possible Brady replacement with Brady contracted on to 2017 anyway.

Don't see why anybody would offer a 2nd round pick for him. He fell to the third for a reason in the draft and hasn't impressed in cameos since then. Hoyer was a better backup QB than him and Pats got nothing for him

There are a lot of QB hungry teams right now though.

There will be a lot of teams in the market for a QB during this off season, they may get lucky and get a second round pick for him.

Belichek holding a presser today apparently. Also just been confirmed that Michael Lombardi has joined patriots as assistant to the coaching staff.

My Top 10 picks mock draft :

1 Texans : Johnny Football
2 Rams : Clowney
3 Jaguars : Bridgewater
4 Browns : Bortles
5 Raiders : Barr
6 Falcons : Matthews
7 Buccaneers : Trade down to Ebron for Watkins + 2nd round picks
8 Vikings : Mack
9 Bills : Robinson
10 Lions : Evans

The 2014 QB class sucks ghey balls btw. Johnny and Bortles have bust written all over them. Can't wait for 2015 - Winston, Mariota, Hundley. Best one since Elway, Aikmen, Bradshaw.

Patriots set to meet with Talib.

http://bostonherald.com/sports/patr...e_aqib_talib_to_meet_with_patriots_at_combine

Could you imagine sitting down to negotiate something with Bill, bet the guy is a hard ass at the table.
Boggles the mind, he's such a nice guy, but has to be ruthless in business. Then again, maybe he has some ruth, as he's trying to get the Revs their own stadium despite them being mostly mediocre(Liverpooled their way into the playoffs last season though!), and is apparently trying to be a major force in getting England a franchise.

EDIT: Wait, I'm thinking of Robert Kraft, didn't think head coaches in the NFL done business like this.

Im not sure how the NFL does business like this myself to be honest, Bill may or may not be involved, still though the idea of negotiating with him would make me shudder. Im not sure if we will be able to agree a deal with Talib. We don't really have a lot of cap room to move around in at the moment do we?

I don't think it's that hard to imagine.

But yeah, cap room is tight, tighter than it could have been, because of the way we dropped Hernandez, but that had to be done. Kraft has already mentioned in interviews stuff like "we'd love to keep him but the cap is tight".

Edelman is in the same boat, and he's a more important piece in the puzzle than most give credit for, not only in the receiver role, but he can cover as a runner, defender, qb(I'd be well worried if it came to that, though!), and is a fine returner.

If push comes to shove I would prefer us to re sign Edelman and look for a new CB in free agency if we need to.

That article you posted does make it seem like a good year for CB buying, whether that gives us options, or lowers Talib's price, we're probably in a good place. I do believe Talib wants to stay too.

Ideal world, we keep both and bring in another CB, but that's highly unlikely.

I think we will probably go to the table and start out by telling Talib if he wants to stay it will have to be on a new deal with reduced salary so as to try free up more cap room. Last years deal was 5 million or something I think when he signed it, he will probably be offered less to sign for another year or keep it the same and sign him for another year.

The fact that both sides are preparing to meet anyway is a good sign.

Nah, he'll never accept a pay cut, but it's highly likely his new contract will be incentive driven. A way that'll hit the cap less, and give him less guaranteed money, but very good money should he play lots and the Pats do well.

IIRC, Gronk is on that kind of system, and actually costs the Pats less than most other leading(but lesser) TEs.

Good point actually, never thought of it that way. The only thing that really bugs me over his two seasons with us is that we have lost him in both conference games when we really needed him there

Obviously thats the luck of the draw, still sucks though

Really hope Talib stays. You can basically tell him to shut down the opposition's main target man and he'll do that more often than not, allowing the other defenders to concentrate on the rest of the threats.

Keeping Edelman & Talib and also adding another CB and a deep threat WR is what I'd like us to add this off-season. Hopefully keep Gronk fit next year and between Gronk, Edelman, WR & Dobson that's enough targets for Brady alongside the running game.

Reading up the Cleveland-Harbaugh story. Would have been a brave move from the Niners to be willing to part with him, given his terrific record to date.

Kenbrell Thompkins could kick on as well, has shown serious potential at times, though he'd have to up his overall game.

Yep. Think it was the game against the Saints where he really showed his potential. Unfortunately he seemed to disappear a bit towards the end of the season with injury issues but he looks a good prospect.

Amendola has flopped as far as I'm concerned, given the money he's earning he hasn't backed up the decision to choose him over Welker. A new WR who offers a deep threat, with Amendola moved into the rotation (unless we can trade him) would be ideal.

The cap stuff is a negotiating ploy by the owner. They are fine and unless you have morons at the top there's always a way to balance your roster. The Wilfork cap number is the one that can be fiddled if needed. It comes down to straight cash homey.

What do you want to pay for a player who has consistent injury/hip problems and has swayed the balance of two championship games in a row?

Are you going to invest heavily in another limited slot player with one productive, healthy season to his name? After you were willing to let him leave the season before and threw a load of money at Amendola.

Spending what resources on said deep threat?

If using difference maker money in this scenario, I presume Edelperson has signed for the Texans?

Well I have no clue about the finances and cap-space but they may look to re-structure existing contracts to free up more space if needed, like Brady did.

Its not about the cap. Its about money and putting too much into one position. Unless nobody is interested in Edelman, its not a good move to have him, Amendola then pay for a free agent difference maker. You're looking at someone mid level like Sanders. I personally think Dobson's development is the key. As well as the obvious in Gronk.

Only huge cap numbers are prohibitive, they have a few in Brady, Wilfork and Mankins. Restructuring multiple contracts is not something to do, in order to acquire talent as that is what bites you in the ass down the road. The likely scenario is a Wilfork extension with new money and an out if he doesn't recover.

I would take the risk on Talib and pray he stays healthy and plays like in the Atlanta and Saints games. Three years for good money.

Guilty, sad and probably lonely.

Interested to see Clowney, with the likes Mayock questioning his work ethic etc.

People seem to be expecting explosive numbers from him, Barr and Mack.

So... Did any of your losers watch the Combine?

Nope, but the scouting reports always crack me up.

Black Receiver: freakish athlete.
White Receiver: Good game intelligence, coachable.

Black QB: Strong arm, great athlete, questionable decision making.
White QB: great in the pocket, not the best athlete, great intelligence and decision maker.

Black RB: Great athlete, possible fumbling issues.
White RB: lol

Basically NFL scouts just peddle lazy racism

I've noticed that, especially relating to the QBs, but I thought I might as well give them the benefit of the doubt. Interestingly, this seems to be inverted this year with the prominent white QB being lauded for his athleticism, while the prominent black QB is being talked up because of his pocket awareness, intelligence and decision making.

Funnily, I have been getting the opposite vibe this year.

When it comes to Manziel and Bridgewater.

Seems many think the latter is the more polished, accurate pocket thrower.

That used to be how the games themselves were commentated on - the intelligence and hard work of white players was praised, versus the 'natural' athleticism of black athletes.

4 of the 5 meetings for the Pats at combine was with highly rated TE's apparently. Read into that what you will, Hooman will soon be no more I am guessing.

Has anyone else seen the story about Adam Muema, the running back? He left the combine because he claims God told him if he did the Seahawks would draft him, he then disappeared for a few days, and has now been found living at an airport because God told him too. And he claims that he talks to God through numbers, and that the God he believes in is a former criminal who calls himself Lord Rayel and claims to be Jesus. Makes Manti Te'o and his imaginary friend look normal

I wonder.

Tbh, Hooman+Gron isn't really enough TE for the Pats, they could well do with a third again. Being able to line up with two attacking TE's again would be of great benefit to them. On the other side, rumours are about of a Gronk exit.

I bet Tebow is responsible...
