NFL Thread 2013-14

The tradition of giving the trophy to the owner first is annoying. Give it to the players who were exceptional.

This!

Imagine Malcolm Glazer lifting the Premier League Trophy last year or the Champions league trophy in 08. There are a few things like this about American sports that annoy me!

I didn't know Glazer actually won it, did they go to complete shit straight after?

Time for bed now. One parting thought though: Pete Carroll has some of the best coaches in the business right now. If you look at that defense, only Earl Thomas is a first round pick. Wagner is a 2nd round pick, most of the other guys are from the 3rd round downwards. They've done an amazing job coaching these players up to this level.

Amazing game. Amazing year. Go Hawks.

They had massive salary cap problems in the following years and the Glazers stopped spending on big contracts having gotten their championship (and diverting attention to acquiring a certain English club).

Blowouts in the Super Bowl are shite. Still though, happy Seattle won.

Both championship games were better. It was a defensive masterclass, yet I wanted to see more fight from Denver. They looked shellshocked.

As for next year I think the 49ers will make it out of the NFC and win the Superbowl.

Go Knicks

I think I might of lost my bet of the Broncos winning by 7-12 points

Two years in a fecking row. Ravens winning last year and now an absolute massacre this year. At least we can all get back to normal next year when the Steelers dominate again

Really poor game from Denver - Seahawks defense were excellent - some of the Manning decisions were poor. I would have taken the points at 4th down befr eHalf time and just get on the board.

Not looked at it yet but I am sure there is rumours gong around about the first scoring play in the game. Some big punter will have made a few quid

The Stars aligned for Seattle last night. If a team gets a safety, a kick off return for a TD, and interception return for a TD, its a safe bet they will not just win but win big. Seattle's defense really made the difference.

Seattle were outstanding last night. Only watched the first few rounds of the regular season this year and lost touch after that. Was delighted that they won their first title as I have cousins near to Seattle. Watched it all last night (first since 2008 Giants v Patriots) and really enjoyed it.

Thought Russell Wilson looked like Rafael when being interviewed after the game.

That Patriots team had a better season than this Broncos team. Undefeated until the Superbowl, Brady had a fantastic year along with the MVP award. They didn't get destroyed in the Superbowl like Denver, but still.

That New York team wasn't near as good as this Seattle team either. But that said, Brady is still better than Manning IMO. He's done more with less and has twice left the field late in the Super Bowl with his team winning only for the defense to lose the game (although Welker's drop a couple years ago proved very costly).

In contrast, Manning threw a game-turning INT (returned for a touchdown) that ultimately lost the game for his team. And was thoroughly dominated last night.

I see it this way: Brady = Montana, Unitas, Staubach, Elway; Manning = Marino, Fouts, Favre, Tarkenton.

I agree his hair was a bit puffed up and he did looke like Rafael from certain angles.

I did enjoy the game last night even though it was a blow out. Nothing wrong seeing a team put together a great performance and completely stifle one of the games best. Plus the Super Bowls have been pretty good lately so can't complain if we get a one sided affair now and then. Looking at how much younger the NFC's top teams appear to be vs how old the AFC's top teams appear to be, this could be a repeat of the 1980's/early 1990's.

I wouldn't be able to claim that with a straight face. Haven't watched enough football to rank quarterbacks, but I'm surprised you rate Brady that high, equal with Montana (God)

Not necessarily equal but in that elite of the elite category. I'd probably put Brady 4th or 5th in that list though.

Montana also had a stacked team around him, some of the best players at their position during that era (and all-time as well, i.e. Rice and Lott). Montana's biggest claim is his leadership and ability to win the big game, granted he lost his share of big games too, but never lost the Super Bowl.

We'll never know how a Unitas or Layne would have fared in Montana's era, or Elway's era, or Brady's era. My guess is Unitas would destroy passing records in today's era.

There's no doubt in my mind that if you put Elway, Fouts, or Marino in that setup under Bill Walsh, they would be talked about as the greatest ever. Those guys could/would have won multiple SBs as well.

I just meant it was the first Superbowl I've watched, live, in full since then.

With the sound down, I reckon they are very alike.

Russell Wilson

Rafael

One more thing, the Broncos coach said that they were hit by a Seattle bus/buzzsaw. Colin Murray said bus, but Terrell Davis said buzzsaw and went into great detail about how buzzsaw. Which was it?....at 7secs below. (Sounds like buzzsaw now).

This marked the 5th time that the leagues #1 ranked offense met the leagues #1 ranked defense in The Super Bowl. Of those 5 match-ups the #1 defense won 4 of them.

Yeah the old defence is the best offence cliche really holds true, the Broncos may as well have just run and thrown balls into a brick wall last night. Obviously it's hard to win a game when you can't score, but it must also be utterly demoralising to be smashed about and shut down constantly.

I'd like to see United show the same desire to keep playing when they go up as the Seattle defence did last night, they did not let up on Denver for one minute.

I agree with the Brady is better than Manning thing, but he's still pretty amazing. That said, I was always pretty confident that Seattle would beat Denver because I'd rate them as tied for the 3rd best team in the league this season. Behind Seattle, San Francisco and equal to Carolina and New Orleans. They benefited from a very weak schedule, and I think would have never been in the Superbowl had New England had it's full arsenal of defenders healthy.

I'm not sure how good that offense was because it didn't meet any good defenses until the big game; pretty sure they would struggle against all of the top NFC teams.

Sixth time from what I recall prior to the game. Previous five matchups was D 4, O 1, with the last meeting in Jan 1991 (NYG D vs Buffalo O). Although the game has changed quite a bit from 1991, it still shows that a dominant defense can usually contain a dominant offense.

Speaking of schedule strength, here is the SOS before the season began based on 2012 records http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000137115/article/teambyteam-strength-of-schedule-for-2013 and after 2013 regular season http://www.canalstreetchronicles.co...fl-2013-strength-of-schedule-seahawks-broncos.

With how the NFL works these days, with teams flipping records annually from previous years (both positively and negatively), the true gauge is after the season is complete, then review the actual SOS. SOS can give false hopes heading into a season IMO, although clubs like Denver/Indy (with Manning) and New England often dominate with a strong or weak SOS (partly due to possessing elite QBs and coaches). Part of the Chiefs anticipated turn around this past season was a weak SOS along with the return of key players and a better coaching staff. The Chiefs may well suffer a drop off next season as NFL schedule formulas will see them facing clubs that placed higher in conference/divisions.

Here is 2014's SOS. Denver's schedule looks much tougher in 2014. http://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2013...gth-of-schedule-an-early-look-at-all-32-teams

Dumb question(?). How has it changed? I watch Rugby Union a bit and the IRB are constantly changing rules for scrummaging, rucking, mauls, etc etc etc. How has US football changed?

Thanks, this is what I was trying to say but I was too lazy to find the details! :smirk:

It's going to be interesting how Denver handles running the gauntlet of the NFC West next season. I don't think most teams in the AFC (apart from Baltimore) are prepared for the kind of speed and physicality that the likes of St Louis and Arizona can bring out. St Louis also have the 2nd pick in the draft, it won't be pretty if they get Clowney. :nervous:

Hopefully this past week has put the Richard Sherman is a dummy or a thug issue to rest. He's clearly one of the best players in the league and one of the few shutdown corners in NFL history.
