Nfl 2008-2009

this is a shit commentating team. I think it`s MArshall Faulk who is an irritating shit.

They called a timeout on the kickoff and Folk kicked deep... do they onside now? They have three timeouts but judging most of this game I can't see them stopping Baltimore and forcing a punt.

That's the season for Dallas... they'll feck up in Philly too. Major shakeup coming up for the Boys in the off-season. Need to get rid of the likes of Adams, Hamlin, Spears, James, etc. Do they resign Ellis, Colombo? Do they keep TO and the other Roy Williams (the safety)? Does Wade get fired? If so does Jerry anoint his next puppet regime leader, Garrett?

Lets hope Romo and his back are protected. Brad Johnson throwing the ball near Ed Reed when I have interest in the result of the game is not something I want to see!

Well, that did not work out too well for me did it. The right quarterback, the same bad scenario.

Ed Reed is an awesome football player, almost as good as I have seen in the deep middle of the field.

Would have been good for Dallas to win in their last game there but oh well.

Maybe the Jaguars can beat them instead, they were decent against the Colts.

2002 NFL Draft. Both teams need safety help. Dallas drafts Roy Williams 8th overall, Baltimore drafts Ed Reed 24th overall. I can't blame Dallas for drafting Roy - he was a monster in college and was a Darren Woodson clone. His best years were his first two, playing next to Woodson. However, Williams is a natural strong safety and after Woody retired he's never been paired with a true free safety. Dallas needs a true free safety like Reed. I figure if they keep Henry they'll move him to FS, something that should have been done a year or two ago. I would love to see Dallas sign Nnamdi Asomogha to play the other corner. But he's going to cost a bunch.

I'd be so much more excited about the Saints demolishing the Lions if we were still in the running for a playoff spot. At least Drew Brees can still break marino's record if he gets 402 yards next week in the Dome.

Won't matter and would be pointless for him to throw the ball 50-odd times to set a record. Would be similar to Strahan getting a gift sack or how TO getting 5 yard receptions against Chicago a few years back to get to 20 in a game. Marino did it on a 14-2 team with zero running game. Credit to Drew wherever he ends up but I personally don't want to see him throwing every down to try to set some personal record.

Talking of records and Strahan, I think your player Ware has a decent shot of getting close to it with the way he has been playing recently. Taylor is having a big game today for the Redskins... from what I think is his side of the field as well. So you never know.

Lord Favre of pro bowl credentials is currently keeping the Playoff race open with his bad play as well. This pleases me.

It means less because it doesn't count for anything since we can't make the playoffs, but it would be a bright spot in an otherwise substandard season.

If Ware doesn't get the Defensive POY the whole voting is a sham. He's arguably the most valuable player as well (though defensive players rarely win this award the last being Lawrence Taylor in 1986). Peyton has the MVP in the bag IMO.

My awards would go...
MVP- Peyton Manning, Indianapolis (runner up: Chad Pennington, Miami)
Offensive POY- Michael Turner, Atlanta (runner up: Adrian Peterson, Minnesota)
Defensive POY- DeMarcus Ware, Dallas (runner up: James Harrison, Pittsburgh)
Offensive ROY- Matt Ryan, Atlanta (runner up: Matt Forte, Chicago)
Defensive ROY- Jerod Mayo, New England (runner up: Curtis Lofton, Atlanta)
Most Improved/Comeback POY- Matt Cassell, New England (runner up: Kurt Warner, Arizona)

That was a great game

And I thought Dallas lacked the bottle, those Broncos have no heart. Will they win at San Diego next week or will we see our first ever 8-8 division winner?

Note: I don't recall an 8-8 division winner in my 20-plus years of NFL watching. Maybe it has occurred before.

From a quick search I just did Cleveland apparently won the then AFC Central at 8-8 in 1985.

Was not watching them at that time myself though.

Anyone watching the Bears vs Packers game? I am thinking the Bears are going to pull it out. I can vouch that it is freezing in Chicago today.

I agree with most of your picks accept Offensive POY. I would give that to Brees especially if he breaks Marino's record next week. For Defensive POY I think it should be either Harrison or Ware(will be a close vote). All of your other picks are who I would vote for even though I have not watched Lofton that much.

Most Improved/Comeback POY- Antonio Bryant, Bucs (runner up: Chad Pennington, Miami)

That is how my awards would look.

It has, the Broncos are pathetic,I forsee them being blown out

What are people's oppinions on JaMarcus Russell?

1st round draft pick, how well has he done this season?

I agree with randomhero.

I can't vote Brees for an award considering how mediocre his team is. If not for Manning's season and Pennington's turn-around, I'd vote Turner for MVP. He's second in rushing yards and touchdowns while playing on a winning team so he gets my vote over Brees.

What are people's oppinions on JaMarcus Russell?

1st round draft pick, how well has he done this season?

I have watched him quite a few times this season, most recently against San Diego and the Pats and I was not impressed at all.

His stats against the Pats in particular were very flattering and show what a sham the passer rating statistic is. A lot of his yards came on two yard dump offs to Higgins or McFadden. Most of the other throws were terrible, he nearly hit a safety on the helmet on a crossing route at one point and his interception was a severely under thrown deep ball when his receiver had a step.

I am no expert but his feet and his mechanics when he throws look terrible, he thinks he can just rely on his strong arm but it isn’t going to cut it at this level. He obviously has talent though and is very hard to bring down, but he looks to me like he should have been a second or third round developmental pick backing up a veteran.

Saying that, having better players around him would help. Oakland’s offense stinks except McFadden, Fargas and the tight end. Maybe he will improve if he gets stability around him in terms of coaching, or lets face it… when the evil emperor is put out of his misery.

Russell was overhyped after a bowl performance against a horrendous Notre Dame defense. He didn't exactly light up the SEC that season and those defenses are the closest you will get to NFL caliber (and it's still miles off in talent and speed). In comparison, his last college season wasn't near as good as Vince Young, another player who got overhyped after a bowl game. However, Young was the far better college player and prospect.

He is pure shit, McFadden on the otherhand looks the real deal.

You vote for the player based on how he's preformed. It's not about his team's record.

He's got a cannon of an arm, but he's got bad technique and makes poor decisions.

.

That really means feck all. It's not even that he makes poor decisions, as most young QBs do(look at Cutler great arm, makes some poor decisions, but you can tell he is gonna be a star), its just that he hasnt had to run a pro offense before or any sort of semblance of one at LSU. He is a talent no doubt, but it will take him far to long to develop if he ever does. Look at Young, Manning, Rivers, and Ryan who I believe are the top other Qbs picked over the past 5 years, and Russell just isnt a top QB, and doesnt look like one.

One word - Coaching. I really don't think Russell is going to amount to much, but if you put him on the Broncos with Shannahan, and Cutler on the Raiders with Tom Cable or whichever of the 12 coaches Russell will likely have had in his first 12 years, Russell would look decent and Cutler would be total crap.

And while I agree that Cutler looks like he's the real deal, I'm not entirely sold on him yet. He just doesn't seem to have much fire in him, and tends to sulk when things aren't going well. Both of those are not good characteristics for a future "star" quarterback.

I figure Cutler will be another Jeff George or Neil Lomax... good QBs but nothing world class. Granted I don't think he'll ever be the cancer George was but I do sometimes scoff at his cockiness. Prove yourself before claiming how great you'll be.

First round QB selections are usually more miss than hit. Look at some of the top QBs right now. Cassell and Romo undrafted, Brady sixth rd, Brees second rd, though some first rounders are doing quite well - Rivers, Mannings, Cutler, Ryan, etc. There have been some major cockups in the first round - Smith, Leaf, Carr, Couch, etc. I'd much rather my club build a solid base before tossing many millions at some young gunslinger, unless there's another Peyton Manning out there, and use the mid rounds to groom a young QB while signing a veteran to get you through a year or two. Often a QB is only going to be as good/great as the supporting cast. And young QBs can have their development stunted with crap talent around them (see David Carr for example).

Im fairly new to "american" football, but i find it and especially the draft system fascinating. I guess the development of young talent is similar to "soccer" in terms of coaching, playing alongside decent players, and most importantly down to the players mentality.

So who look like the best picks from the last draft? Darren McFadden looks like a good rookie.

Well, Ryan and Mayo seem guaranteed winners of the rookie awards and I am sure both teams would not change their picks. The Falcons have had a huge turnaround, with him showing leadership in key situations and making some big throws, does not look like a rookie at all. Mayo has rare speed and athleticism for his position and has been highly productive on a winning team, even directing the huddle and wearing the green dot helmet at times. Can’t ask for much more than that, especially in a complex system where he is asked to do a lot and has more blocks to shed.

In terms of position the rookie running backs seem to have had the greatest success, even though it could be said it is one of the easiest transitions to make from college, except blitz pick up. Johnson, Forte, Smith, Slaton, Stewart and even McFadden and Jones who got banged up, look like solid players.

Chris Horton who was a seventh round pick looks like the biggest steal but we will have to see if he builds on it next season. He was impressive especially against the run and is a big hitter. It's also a good story because of who he replaced and the fact they are similar in some aspects.

Take a look at this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/don_banks/12/10/re-do-draft-2008/index.html

Personally I feel the draft system is an infringement on free trade and could probably be challenged in court. That said, it never will be. But a college player entering the NFL should be allowed to sign with whomever he chooses.

RBs tend to be a dime a dozen, so probably Ryan who looks a franchiseQB and was just what Hotlanta needed
