Nfl 2008-2009

Well, Ryan and Mayo seem guaranteed winners of the rookie awards and I am sure both teams would not change their picks. The Falcons have had a huge turnaround, with him showing leadership in key situations and making some big throws, does not look like a rookie at all. Mayo has rare speed and athleticism for his position and has been highly productive on a winning team, even directing the huddle and wearing the green dot helmet at times. Can’t ask for much more than that, especially in a complex system where he is asked to do a lot and has more blocks to shed.

In terms of position the rookie running backs seem to have had the greatest success, even though it could be said it is one of the easiest transitions to make from college, except blitz pick up. Johnson, Forte, Smith, Slaton, Stewart and even McFadden and Jones who got banged up, look like solid players.

Chris Horton who was a seventh round pick looks like the biggest steal but we will have to see if he builds on it next season. He was impressive especially against the run and is a big hitter. It's also a good story because of who he replaced and the fact they are similar in some aspects.

Take a look at this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/don_banks/12/10/re-do-draft-2008/index.html

Thanks, interesting read.

Personally I feel the draft system is an infringement on free trade and could probably be challenged in court. That said, it never will be. But a college player entering the NFL should be allowed to sign with whomever he chooses.

Im fascinated by the draft as its so different to the system we have in football. Strange for such socialist/egalitarian approach to be favoured by the home of capitalism.

The NFL does a lot of things that may seem very socialistic. The draft rewards bad teams with better prospects. The salary cap prevents teams from gobbling up all the talent. I think you have to be approved by the other owners too if you want to buy an NFL team.

But if you look at the NFL as one giant conglomerate rather than 32 different businesses, all these rules make sense from a capitalistic point of view.

The draft allows teams that have a bad year to recover and become competitive within a couple of years rather than have to spend 10 years building a franchise. As a result, no team stays horrible for long (unless they are the Detroit Lions).

The draft isn't guaranteed help either. Many teams have drafted players that everyone thought would become superstars only to have them turn into total busts. This kind of thing can set a franchise back a couple years (see Ryan Leaf). Other times teams can draft guys in the late rounds with the intention of developing a serviceable backup only to have the guys surprise everyone and turn into a brilliant player (see Tom Brady). Plus teams aren't locked into their position either since draft positions can be swapped with other teams just like players. In fact nowadays most teams don't trade players for other players as often as players are given away for draft slots.

Teams that are good at scouting will always be successful in the draft no matter what their draft positions. Teams that are terrible at scouting talent will have terrible teams despite being allowed to pick early in the draft year after year (once again see Detroit Lions).

The more competitive the league is, the more the American people will watch because of all the drama involved. It's the last week of the season and fans everywhere are interested to see how everything will play out. The NFL milks the shit out of all this drama financially and that's why they're the most financially lucrative sport in the US.

The only possible problem with the NFL is not havign a team in Los Angeles which could support 3

It seems quite a sustainable format, with all teams relatively competetive. Another advantage seems to be that the college base of the systems is strong.

Don't think LA fans ever cared about NFL. They had the Raiders and Rams yet struggled to sell out home games regardless of club records. No one really seemed to care when both teams left town unlike Baltimore and Cleveland fans.

There are some crazy wind conditions at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Can't get anything going at all and the posts have to be fixed before the teams attempt a field goal.

There has been no pass attempts to the side of the field where the wind is the worst. It's all we fecking need.

So there you go, our season cut short, despite an 11-5 record, all thanks to the giant cock that is Brett Favre. 3 costly int, and the most pivotal on the most encouraging series the Jets had in the 2nd half.

However, I am satisfied. Ill be extremely interested to see what Cassel does now - or more realistically, where he goes. He has done astounding this year for us, eventually got chemistry with our receivers, and is good on the scramble. Anyway, we need to get some people in on our defence in the off season. We got old all at once, and it hurt us.

But I wont lie, it hurts to go out after such an impressive season. Heads went down after Brady went out so early (7 minutes..thats cruel), and rightly so. We lost the MVP, but certain players really stepped up and made a huge difference, especially my man of the season - Wes Welker. What a player.

Anyway, I shall now put my support on the Steelers, who are my mates team. He did the same last year with the Pats! Thanks for the entertainment Patriots, its been a great, if not frustrating season.

feck you Brett Favre.

I was not really expecting maximum effort from the Jets once they saw the Baltimore – Jacksonville game was a blow out at half time. They were better than I thought they would be in the second half. At least they did not make the cut as well if the Pats did not with an 11-5 record.

Great turn around for Miami, nearly imperfect then a division title. Glad for Pennington as well, I have always liked him as a player, if he had more physical ability he would be a top QB in the NFL. No doubt in my mind that the Jets would be division winners right now if he had played for them this season.

Favre was terrible today, as he was for a lot of the year. He should just retire.

He has been great, totally exceeded expectations. It also seems that he is smart enough to go to a team and system which will put him in the best situation to succeed. Rather than just chase the biggest cheque. However, if the stories doing the rounds today about Brady's knee have any truth to them, he may have to stick around for a while: http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/28399629/

Yeah I saw that, but on an interview I saw with him the other day he seemed quite dismissive of that. Said it was feeling great and he would be ready to compete 100% for his starting job again next season. (Dont you just love his attitude towards the game).

Ps. feck Brett Favre.

Yeah, probably better off to just be optimistic it is not like Belichick would address it at a press conference or anything. He has also been at Gillette Stadium rehabbing for quite a while now, just depends how far along he is. Apparently, Peter King was on NBC earlier saying people close to Brady told him he is ahead of schedule and the Pats may be setting the story to get value for Cassel. So there is conflicting reports.

Either way im looking forward to Brady returning, but I really do respect Cassel, and what he did this season.

Keyser, im going to drown my sorrows, night mate. Ill buy you a beer next year at Wembley.

Good finish to the season for my 49ers. Singletary's permanent hiring was announced to the locker room today shortly after today's win and immediately drew cheers from the entire team. The man has inspired this team and I'm excited to see what he'll do in the draft and with a full season in charge.

Jerry needs to realize he's not a GM or football talent expert. If he ever wants to win another playoff game and ultimately a Super Bowl, he needs to hire real football people to run his organization. That means the following should occur (but will not of course)...

1) Call Pioli, offer him 5 years, $30m and give him full control over player personnel and the draft. He will then either fire Phillips, demote him to DC (not a bad idea, though he may not accept), and then hire a new HC, perhaps Spagnola of NYG or McDaniels of NE.

2) Release TO. Yes he's put up some good numbers, is still a quality player, but his production and presence is not worth it. As Cris Carter said you get rid of him first and then address your club needs. Too many times Romo forces balls to TO to keep "the player" satisfied. TO doesn't want out of Dallas like he did SF and Philly but his constant need for attention and disruptive behavior make him unnecessary. Right now it's the money that is keeping him from blowing up. They have a true #1 in Roy but need to make him the focal point of the offense and get him into a system (full training camp will make a huge difference).

3) Let Adam Jones leave. Let Ken Hamlin leave. Release Brad Johnsons, he's washed up. Resign Canty, Colombo and Ellis.

4) Address the OL. Make an offer for Jordan Gross. If he accepts release Adams. If a top LT can't be signed, retain Adams at least until June. Look to the OL in the draft.

5) Address the secondary. Move Henry to FS something that should have occurred 2 seasons ago. Draft another good corner and/or safety. If a guy like Lito Shepperd is available at a decent cost bring him in.

6) Sign a massive DT if you are going to keep the 3-4. Yes Ratliff made the PB but that's because DTs had down years in the NFC. He's not big enough to play NT in 3-4 even though he's had good success. But the DL does not clog up the run, it's the LBs and DBs making tackles. They need a big massive NT to stuff the run and then you move Ratliff to DE and sit that overrated piece of shit Spears on his ass. They should have acquired Shaun Rogers last season but didn't. He was the type of big body a 3-4 needs. So I say sign a couple journeyman, roll the dice and maybe come up big. Guys like Gabe Watson and Marcus Tubbs (the latter sat out this year due to injuries but has the size if healthy). Do you resign Tank? I dunno but he's acclimated into the system so maybe keep him and bring in a big body as cover.

There are more concerns but these are issues I've bitched about for a while. The opening paragraph since the mid-90s. And point #1 is the only way this club will ever fulfill expectations.

If the Vikings are wise they'll look to sign Cassell. He could solve their QB issue for a while and put them in contention for a SB.

There are a few teams that might be interested in Cassell. Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit (not a chance in hell), maybe Tampa Bay as Garcia is old and oft-injured, Kansas City, NY Jets if Favre retires/is released, San Francisco.

Hands off Pioli and McDaniels MrMarcello!

Seriously though, I fear Pioli will move on now, full control of a team is something he should have had a long time ago. In terms of him going to Dallas I am not sure, let’s face it Jerry would end up involving himself in decisions in some way or the other. I doubt they could have the same working relationship that he has here with Belichick. Maybe Parcells being close to him and his father in law would influence the decision as well, he was not happy with certain things in the organisation towards the end of his tenure, like the T.O saga. I personally don’t think McDaniels is ready to be a HC and he could decide to not listen to offers like last year, but if he did, Dallas obviously has the pieces in place offensively for him to be successful. A Belichick, Crenell, Weis reunion in some capacity is something I would not mind seeing anyway if it becomes available.

Totally agree with you on Cassel. The Vikings, Bears and Bucs were the three destinations I had in mind. Gruden in particular would help get the best out of his physical ability scheme wise. No chance he goes to the Jets though, that would knock me sick.

Of course Pioli won't go there - Jerry won't pitch an offer and he's not going to give up control. Colin Cowherd was talking about Jerry today on the radio. He's saying guys like Jerry and Dan Snyder are ego driven. They hire yes men and when they do go outside the box (i.e. Jimmy, Bill, Marty) they end up letting them go or fire them outright. Because ego guys like Jerry and Dan love people agreeing to them. Love their name being boasted. Jerry said it himself that he loves the Boys being the lead story. Which means even if it's negative he can feed off his name and his club being talked about coast-to-coast. Cowherd also said these kind of guys are "king makers" meaning they love the ego stroking of knowing they gave so-and-so his break (i.e. Spurrier, Gailey, Switzer, Campo, bringing Gibbs back, etc.).

Pioli is Parcells' son-in-law and would have been a perfect hire 4-5 years ago when Bill was in Dallas. Things would be a lot better today. No TO, no Pac-Man, no issues in the secondary, no lack of discipline, better scheming, etc. Pioli also would not have given up so much for Roy Williams. He'd probably have gotten him back in April on draft day for less. And most importantly Parcells would probably still be HC and if not, he'd probably be VP.

Wonder where Shanny ends up, hopefully the Broncos can pick up Cowher

Rumors that Shanahan could replace Garrett in Dallas as OC. Can't imagine it happening but apparently Jerry and Wade are huge admirers of him. I've also heard that Detroit wants to speak with Shanahan.

Cleveland is willing to give Pioli everything... total power... and he wants Kirk Farentz as his HC wherever he goes. Interesting.

Jerry would have to make a 6 million plus offer for him if he wants him as oc

I know which is why I said the only way he is coming to Dallas is if Phillips is out, and tbh Shanny is a far better coach than Wade Phillips.

Shannahan has 20 mil coming to him over three years, why mess that up, if he isnt gonna get the big money he can work in the booth for a mil or so a year in addition to his guaranteed money

Ferentz's name has come up repeatedly over the years, but I can't really understand why. He's built a solid program at Iowa, but nothing spectacular.

Seems that Lerner wants the whole setup to be Belichick philosophy based after he could not get Cowher, with Pioli at the top. The success of Thomas Dimitroff this season could be something to do with that as well. McDaniels was interviewed yesterday, Crennel is waiting on confirmation of appointments to see if a defensive role is available and even Mangini was interviewed earlier on in the week. Not too thrilled that different layers of management could move on in consecutive years to be honest. Hopefully, it is just flirtation as the likes of Pioli have gone through similar processes before and decided to stay on. Rumour is that he made some very extravagant demands as well.

Mangini getting interviewed so soon after getting sacked, something which I am sure Pioli was aware of, indicates to me that people around the league and maybe even the Patriots put more emphasis on Mike Tannenbaum for some things which occurred in the past. Everyone thought it would be a while before he received any interest.

No one really stood out this year, that said I would have given it to AP because he is a fecking badass and is clearly the best RB in the league and the Vikings would be nowhere without him

Most overrated? I guess so was Unitas and Marino.

The NFL really needs to change its OT rule. As most analysts and former players have said, either both teams should get one possession (assuming first team on offense scores) or the entire overtime should be played out like a regular quarter. Imagine in baseball if the first side batting scored and the other side did not get to bat. Or basketball if the first side winning the jump ball scored on their first possession and that was game over. It's ridiculous to end OT after one possession. I've said it for years and I'm not even a Colts fan.

Finally, can someone explain how the LB for Indy is called for a personal foul yet on the same play a Chargers OL-man has his hand in the LB's face (under the mask) which is an illegal act itself. How the refs miss that one but see the LB committing a foul is beyond explanation. That should have been offsetting. Also felt the defensive holding on the same series was highly questionable.

Quite a few calls were missed last night. There was a blatant missed holding call on Baker in the Arizona game in the end zone. Should have resulted in a safety which would have been two for the game, at least it did not directly affect the result of the game though. Both were entertaining games anyway, Fitzgerald's hands are off the charts. Looking forward to the Miami game today, should be defensive which is the kind of football I like. Carolina are my tip to take the whole thing now I think.

Man Miami are playing shit hahaha, that was a sick return by Ed Reed earlier

Baltimore are a good team though, I picked Miami to lose this week in my losers pool and Atlanta to lose in another

This next game will be good, could see it going to OT as well. Philly is en fuego, but the Vikes are at home and have AP. Still think Philly will win, but it could go either way just like the game last night

Baltimore won the Super Bowl the first season I watched NFL.

I'll support them in the playoffs.
