He wasn't. He left before the season.
He put the foundations.

So levels above us, then?Seems like there’s a little bit of bandwagoning going on with ten Hag. There’s almost a general consensus that he's “the one” and people have just run with it and it’s kind of snowballed from there. To be clear, if we do appoint him then I’ll be excited and I’ll support him. But I find it very odd that he has this enormous support because I’m fairly confident in saying that most people will know him as the Ajax manager who they’ve watched in the Champions League a few times and that’s about it. But they're almost convinced that he’s the guy.
No doubt there are people who watch him and have followed him and know his weaknesses and strengths, but most people won’t, I’m sure. I include myself in that. I’ve watched Ajax a few times in the CL and thought they looked well-coached and very competent, but that’s as far as it goes really.
I think it’s simply a case of him being “new”. There’s a little bit of the unknown about him. We know Poch, we know his strengths and weaknesses so he’s kind of old news now. But ten Hag? There’s still a little mystery around him. We don’t know his weaknesses as intimately so that’s enticing.

We're overdue getting a modern football manager with a proper understanding of how football works today. No more managers past their sell by dates and unable or unwilling to evolve. No more managers brought in because he’s an ex player legend. Liverpool did it with Klopp and look at them now. Chelsea and Arsenal have done it more recently with their managers and they have started to progress whilst we’ve gone steadily backwards.Seems like there’s a little bit of bandwagoning going on with ten Hag. Alfred Schreuder was the assistant of McLaren in the title winning season at Twente. But McLaren has stated that the work of ten Hag in the penultimate season was crucial towards laying the foundations for the title win. Schreuder would later join Ajax as ten Hag's #2.Jol didn't have a 119 goal season like ETH had. Jol lost the title in that 106 goal season to FC Twente, where ETH was assistant for Twente. Plus, Jol's next season had Ajax with 36 goals in 17 matches. That's basically a 72 goal full season rate if he didn't resign from Ajax in December. ETH has never had a poor goal return like Jol showed in that final season.
Edit: Correction, ETH was not assistant for Twente at the time, as he had left the season prior.

Van Nistelrooy and Suarez weren’t crap even though Hunterlaar and Kezman were averageNot a dig at Ten Hag as he is my first choice, but I do understand people with some reservations for managers coming from Eredivisie.
I was really surprised to read that Jol's Ajax scored 106 league goals and ended the season with +86 goal difference, and he didn't set the world alight at Fulham.
I don't remember how their general play looked like back then, but stats were quite remarkable.
Steve McClaren: "Erik [ten Hag] is very disciplined and people have to buy into that and have that work ethic.
Tactically he’s outstanding. He worked with Pep [Guardiola] at Bayern Munich and took in his philosophy too.
They called him ‘Mini Pep’ out there."
Neville literally did a "u" turn on his Ten Hag position the other day.It seems the club have used Neville, Butt and Sheringham to back Poch....
We need #announcetenhag trending on Twitter....

“Ten hag from what I’m told, even in the interview with #MUFC, wanted to make sure for United to back him in case he joins - He wants to be the man who decides together (on signings) with the board and Rangnick, but with his own ideas.”[Fabrizio Romano]
As much as I favour Ten Hag, like most on here, I’d say the average United fan on the street would say Poch and likely not have heard of Ten Hag.
Seems to be being reported we've had a new interview with Poch this week now
I'd be confident I watch more football than most and I don't think I've seen one.I haven't watched an Ajax game since 3 years ago v Spurs tbh.
How many people here have watched 5 or more full Ajax games since then? I'd hazard a guess it would be less than 5%.
Why would you be confident you watch more football than most then?I'd be confident I watch more football than most and I don't think I've seen one.
Ironically i watch more Dutch football than Champions League since i don't have BT sport.I haven't watched an Ajax game since 3 years ago v Spurs tbh.

Still willing to give ETH the edge over Pochettino. Don't think it's a complete no brainer though.
Because of the amount of time I waste doing it.Why would you be confident you watch more football than most then?
I can’t see why PSG would allow their manager to be interviewed by another club when he’s still working for them. They aren’t exactly like Ajax who will allow a manager or player to do that with their blessings
