Next Draft - Ideas and Discussions

While we at tactical surprises and all that, think we should draft more then 12 players(14 or 15 would be ideal). In that case you will make your opponent in the dark as you will have free hands in tactical department. With only one sub there isnt much you can do and there is zero surprises in the first round + the drafting would be even more fun as you pick more players:drool:
For reinforcements rounds we can make the rule that you need remove one player before you pick the next one so we dont to much players in our squad.

I like the sound of that, although I'd be concerned that the speed would slow down to a crawl towards the end. It already gets painfully slow by the time the 12th picks roll around.

think it would just switch from 12 to 14/15 as im guessing its because of the last pick, specially in this current system where that 12h man is most often unused as you cant really change much with only one player.

I think we should leave that for future drafts with more familiar pools. In this one you'd have 224 players banned and a further 176 picked when you start Round 13, so it wouldn't be of much interest to most.

Yeah. Most folk lose interest in the picking as their teams are already done.

I think that's an interesting idea, but you'd probably have to organize the drafting a bit differently. If it's just straight snake with no twists or limitations, it could easily turn into the 12th man borefest times three.

Maybe after turn 11 it could turn into a sheep-style submission. Any duplicates could be ruled out or returned to the pool in some fashion.

11 picks, then draw, then 3 more picks could spice things up.

I like that although those at the bottom of the snake would think they were shafted since no. 16 would pick number 11 last. So I think 12 snake style and 3 lambish style (we don't need even more blocked players)

Nonsense. Let's block from the off. First round onwards and end up with Emile Heskey and Carlton Palmer leading our teams.

Some sort of sheep variation at the end could certainly work. It would prevent the borefest possibility, at least.

However, I'm skeptical about the true value of these extra players – if they're all added after a freely drafted XI. To me, at least, the point of introducing a couple of extra subs would be an increased chance of subs playing an actual part in the thing. If it just ends up as three players making no difference rather than one, there's not much point to it.

It's a tricky one, clearly, but one possible thing to experiment with is forced subs, if you will. You need to draft 14 or 15 players – and you need to make two or three substitutions during the match.

As Aldo says above, though, this kind of thing is probably best saved for a draft with a different pool.

Maybe we could also introduce players exchange between managers at the end. It could start 'underhand' deals between managers at different picking orders, though, but who cares.

The thing with extra picks is that they would only really matter if the pool is large enough to have a good number of quality players. The one sub is normally a good player who can provide a different approach to the match, but if we have too many of these subs, we could end up with players who may not even get involved in the matches just because they aren't good enough, particularly for scan voters.

Maybe if we have a huge pool like some slightly-restricted all-time draft, then extra subs can likely work. In other cases, special policies may need to be set to make sure that the extra subs aren't for nothing in the first round.

In the future, we could imagine a random draw that defines an injured midfielder per team so that you need your bench to make a starting 11 :wenger:

That reminds of EAP's Reality Draft which had something like this for Round 1. Maybe we could have another Reality Draft in the future, possibly as a sheep draft to make things more interesting.

Still one remaining place for a dedicated manager !

Do we have to wait for the end of the final to start the process (1 Blocked player per manager if my understanding is good) ?:wenger:

Yes, nothing starts till the ongoing draft is properly done.
Their game is scheduled next week, which was when this was gonna start at the earliest anyway. I'm travelling during the weekend, will be back Monday afternoon and after that whenever the final of that draft is done, we will start this one.

If anyone's interested in being an AM, I'm looking for one, so hit me up if you want a manager to assist.

Great draft premise @Aldo , should unearth plenty of under appreciated gems, with very few greats, and that too in an all time context which really widens the playing field. Really looking forward to spectating this one.

After some early research the player pool looks actually quite good. That said I don't have 100+ names so we could be picking the dregs by then.
