I think as fans we should be least worried about price. The market has changed and has gone batshit crazy, but there's a reason for that - teams are earning more revenue.

And we're Man United. Absolutely rolling in money. Did nobody notice there has never been an FFP issue with us, when it was a thing, when we have been spending silly money for the last few years?

1st spell at Chelsea - sacked/left after he refused to work with avram grant who at the time was director of football.

Real Madrid - fell out and subsequently dropped senior players. As a result it cost them the league or at least prevented them from putting any pressure of Barca. Sacked as a result.

2nd spell at Chelsea - the whole Eva Caneiro fiasco.

I like mourinho and hope he stays here for years to come but he needs to realise his stubbornness will always result in things ending badly.

Weren't you talking about stubbornness to get the men he knows from previous clubs?

To me Matic is a compromise. We clearly need someone of his ilk, and I would rather chance Fabinho or attempt for someone more "star quality" but he's won the EPL 2 of the last 3 years. Sure, he isn't on the same form as his best season, but he's still good. The biggest thing is that he plays a position we literally have no one for. Carrick is old and will NOT be able to play more than 50% of the games without losing fitness. Matic is a known quantity that Jose can plug into the team and know exactly how he will perform and how to shape the team around. If this summer wasn't so terrible thanks to Griezmann deciding to stay, I think the perception of us signing him would be different because he would be looked upon as a "necessary" signing instead of an exciting one, and that's just what he is.

He's an unappreciated enabler of proven pedigree in this league under this manager.

Surprised so many people are against this signing. He was a mainstay in the winning Chelsea side last season keeping Fabregas out of the team, never injured to my knowledge, still 28 (for a few weeks)...

He is one of the best midfielders in Europe when on song and working in tandem with Hererra and Pogba he'd fit like a dream. One of the few defensive midfielders in the world that can turn defence into attack in an instant.

Add to that his desperation to come to us even over giants such a Juventus and that Jose has worked with him before and I could see him being our standout performer next season.

This is pretty much where I am with this transfer.

Van Persie joined United when he was 29 years old. We won the title with his help. Thank god good managers don't think like some of you cnuts on here.
alot of posters didn't want Rvp. Said he was too old and complained about where Kagawa or Rooney would play . Some even said the price was too much.

He only gave us one really great season so in the end people on both sides of the argument was right.

I'm incredibly happy I didn't pay attention to this place at the time. I would have lost my mind

Errr .. the one season he gave us was worth many seasons we would have got from other less players.

If time returned I'll take him again for this season only.

And how many great seasons did the other two give us after signing RVP?

Also everyone knew his age and injury record, he was signed to win the league. He did that. Arguing he wasn't a success is moronic.

If we are getting Matic then it's good signing from Jose,he complement well with Herrera and Pogba,he's technically sound solid in defence and especially he got that eagle's eye on the field.Lets stop pretending and agree the fact market is fluctuated he's only 28/29 good 4-5years from him is good enough.

Also, RVP at this time was arguably the best striker in the league, had just won the Golden boot with Arsenal. It was no brainer to agree on signing him.

It's like refusing to sign Sanchez now because he's 29 ? madness.

This deal reminds me Thiago Motta for PSG, Matic could be a really important player if we manage to sign him.

It is sort of all moot since 28 year old Matic is nowhere near as good as 29 year old RVP, 29 year old Sanchez or 30 year old Schweini. Matic is a player who is already showing signs of decline and his peak was not that good in the first place.

Stubbornness in general.

A We dont have director of football, and whatever he is buying is great but we still needed more.

B We had to drop players like rooney and show them the door which he efficiently did and Manager is the boss of the dressing room at united.

C He's not the same man anymore and people learn and grow,Which he has.

You was talking above about RVP giving us one good season, and I say if Matic turns to be able to give us one season when we win the title he will definitely be considered to be a successful signing even if he dropped as hell the season next.

However, what I agree with you about is that RVP and Sanchez are/were on another level in their late 20s.

Mourinho likes players who are strong and Premier League proven.

The facts are there, this is the guy who has been the main holding midfielder for the team which has won the League two out of the last three seasons. There's no question in my mind he'll strengthen us.

He's a functional signing, designed to protect and help get the best out of those in front of him, namely Pogba - I see no reason why he won't do that.

The price? I'm past caring on transfer fees - not my money and I'd rather spend it than it end up lining the Glazers pockets. The fees are crazy, then again they always have been in a way - they've increased as prize money and cash in the game has.

Inflation.

How is he showing signs of decline?

It's been covered many times in this thread. His work-rate numbers have declined for 2 years in a row since Chelsea won the league under Mou. Less tackles, blocks, clearances, headers, less distance covered, less passes per 90 etc. On top of that for many people it's actually visible when you watch Chelsea.

Maybe he lost the desire to play for Chelsea after that title, might be lots of things behind the scenes. Coming here might just spark him to be his old self again. And you can see he wants to come here really bad. He probably likes working with Jose.

I think one disastrous season for them as a whole which should be viewed as an anomaly and a formation change last season with a different role for him could largely account for a change in stats. I don't see any visible signs of decline either.

Would not be a good sign at all.

He went form playing in a 3-man midfield under Mourinho (next to fabregas and ramirez/obi-mikel) to playing in a 2-man midfield. So if anything his numbers should have gone up. But ok, you obviously believe these stat drops to be coincidental or something. Each to their own.

Of course his stats drop due to playing alongside Kante with Luiz stepping forward into midfield. He has 5 defensive aware player around him at all time ffs.

Most of the frustration was related to the fact that it made the signing of Kagawa a bit pointless, which turned out to be true
Saf knew what he was doing. He was going to sell Rooney in the summer. kagawa would have been out #10. Rooney would have pissed off to Chelsea in the summer. Unfortunately Saf Retired and Moyes gave Rooney a whopper contract
