Matic at his best is a monster. Plenty of players can have an extended dip in form doesn't mean he can't recapture his old self at all. At the very least he adds balance to the midfield and allows Herrera to push further on where he has the ability to hurt teams more and press off the front foot. Matic doesn't need to be incredibly creative, we have 2 guys already more than capable of taking that mantle from midfield.
I just care what rival clubs and the media think about our transfers. That's what counts

Fellaini never plays a defensive role though, he's usually the furthest fecking forward out the 3.

Both Carrick and Alonso won the Champions League in a 4-3-3. I don't think you have to cover the fullbacks either. I think you're too much out of position if you're doing that.

@Orc funnily enough when the stats were all in Kante's favour, the fan boys were throwing them out all over the place. But when the stats aren't as much in his favour, they're meaningless. Feck statistics, I've been following Matic from before Benfica, I don't need stats to know that Fellaini is not even close to Nemanja regarding anything but elbowing, that is where Fella excels I guess.
Jose knows the kind of players he needs, and what he can get out of those he relies on. John Terry was out of favour at Chelsea and looking past it until Mourinho came back and turned him, and Matic, back into PFA team of the year players again in 2015.

My thoughts exactly. I will be more than happy with the players Mourinho signs this summer, the guy has a plan and players like Matic and Lindelof are the kind of players that will give solid performances. We get criticized for the galactico approach and then criticized for the under the radar approach. Our big signing this summer was meant to be Griezmann but due to circumstances and him being a decent guy the deal has been put on hold until a more suitable time. We need an upgrade on Carrick/Smalling/jones and we seem to be doing that. Someone on the wings would be nice and a goalscorer to come in soon and if we keep De Gea we will be set. Everyone needs to fecking relax and stop creaming yourselves over Fabinho who could easily be a nothing player in this league. Matic has played a part in two league championships in the last three, is at an optimal age to make an impact and would fit in nicely here. Also I'm pretty sure there were a lot of disgruntled fecks when we signed Carrick/Valencia/Evra. I've done enough moaning over the last four years and now we have one of the best managers in the world and got rid of the specter of Giggs trying to sleepwalk in to the job so I'm just going to fecking enjoy it this season knowing Mourinho is setting us in the right direction.

Technically Carrick was in a two with Scholes(Hargreaves played wide right) and Alonso was suspended for the final in the CL win he had with Real.
i'm saying he adds nothing over what we have. If carrick is retiring, then he's a 2016/2017 carrick like-for-like replacement, not an improvement over carrick.
