40m is 5-10m too much. Hopefully 30m base fee and he rest in addons meaning he's a success.

Either way, doesn't matter if he improves us and we win the league within the next two seasons.
Matic to get us winning the league. Wow. Wish I had your optimism.

The issue is that he's 29.

Here's some midfield players that have his age:
- Sergio Busquets (29)
- Arturo Vidal (30)
- Lucas Modric (32)
- Radja Nainggolan (29) people were raving about him on this forum.
- Claudio Marchisio (31)
- Ivan Rakitić (29)
- Thiago Motta (34)

These are the starting center mids for PSG, Barça, Juventus, Roma, Real and Bayern.

i'm sure that had it been a more glamorous name, people here wouldn't talk about age as much.

You can argue that Matic is easily in the top ten DM in the world, and knowing that most of them aren't available, it makes perfect sense to go for him over say Fabinho. i rate the later but if you had the chance to sign an experienced and proven pl player, you don't miss it. this is what we need, we can't allow our self to gamble on Fabinho without knowing how he would adapt to the PL. There's a big step between the french league and the pl so it's not a given that he would succed (before jumping on that, i'm not saying he would't).

And quite frankly, the state of our team right know, we need this kind of players, we need experience, we need players that won the pl before and know what it mean to do so. don't forget that we lost Rooney and we're gonna soon lose Carrick.

What would have been a better option right now ? we're taking someone that played 35 pl games for the title winning team ...

He's only 29,
Ageing like a fine wine,
Matic, Matic,
Matic, Matic,
Now he plays in the red,
Watch us kill you stone dead,
Matic, Matic,
Matic, Matic.

If he wants to play, why go to Arsenal or Spurs? As if he would go straight to the first team lineup. Better to go to a midtable club

The post in question argued that 28/29 was a prime age for a footballer. It didn't really merit such a pedantic response. It's about right. The age discussion is a reasonable one, but there are good arguments to the contrary that you went out of your way to conveniently ignore.

Which is your problem. You have no interest in debate. All you're interested in doing is picking up on posts you don't like, using them to wind people up, and searching for anything Spurs-related to pursue your silly victim-playing agenda. It's relentless, really. Your entire approach to this forum is pathetic and a complete waste of your own time.

That's the last I will say on this, as I can't be arsed to waste any more of my time on you.

I replied to a notion that I don't agree with, namely that 29 is "peak age". It's hardly a question of "not liking" the notion. You translate this as a wind-up, but it seems to me that you have wound yourself up ... and for no good reason except you were determined to be so.

Depending on the position, playing style and other factors, I would say that peak age is generally 26 -27.

The Matic signing is huge and gives us the perfect platform to perform against all strengths in the EPL. This is something we failed to do last season.

We'll carry two different formations in the EPL.

We'll play like this against the smaller teams who are happy to get a point from us. (Obviously all names are used to show the shape, no interest in any debate about who should be there etc)

What the feck are you talking about? How is 29 not peak age for a DM?

Peak age of 26/27 was in the 1970s...sport science has moved on, my friend. The average age a footbaler retires at now is 35. In the 70s it was 31/32. Peak age for a footballer (especially a DM) is 30/31.

Most games in the Premier League are against teams that fall into the category of "smaller sides", sides we should beat. We aren't spending £40m or so on Matić only for him to be a special tactical option for the bigger games, he'll be a near permanent fixture in our midfield this coming season, regardless of the opposition.

I laugh every time I come into a thread and see people "talking" to themselves and arguing with what I assume is GS. Glad I blocked him. Really would like to know what he offers on this forum other than 1st class WUMming.

Yeah the Dier thread is just utter utter nonsense with people seemingly replying to themselves :lol:. Same reason Ive always avoided the Spurs threads in the football forum.

Nah, you're fishing mate. You know very well what button to push to turn a discussion onto Spurs. Talk down Utd and highlight how great your club is. It's what you do.

If commenting on Matic's age is a button to push to turn a discussion onto Spurs, it makes me wonder which subjects are 'safe'. I probably couldn't comment on the colour of United's shirt without receiving several replies asking how many trophies Spurs have won recently.

Wrong. Watch.

I really don't think the age thing's that big a problem: he's just turning 29 and ideally, barring injuries or a sudden decline in form, we'll be able to get another two or three good years out of him at a minimum. Obviously it's handy when you're getting a player like Pogba who's got a decade or so ahead of them, but sometimes it's handy to bring in an experienced players who'll give you a couple of very good seasons.

I remember when buying a footballer that is 33+ was considered worrisome because of his age, this "big decline when they hit 29" is hilarious really!
Everything put down to numbers, statistics, averages, FM/FIFA fans everywhere. :wenger:

If Matic's age is the problem then don't you think Spurs are in big trouble replacing players like Vertongen, Alderweireld and Dembele?

I think he is a great player and Mourinho knows him very well so he will know exactly what we are getting. The problem I have with this signing is that he is 29. He will have 3-4 years at most. It is a good stopgap maybe in a couple of years we will have someone better available for an acceptable fee. However it goes to show how mental this market is when we are signing a 29-year old for 40 million pounds. As of this moment however he will make our team better and that is what matters.

Wrong. Watch.

We'll see.

Mouirnho's been messing around with the midfield three shape during pre-season and we watched him try it in the tail end of last season, depending who we were playing. I'm convinced he'll play Pogba as our most advanced midfielder for a lot of EPL games, to do that, he'll need a DM (Matic). But home games against bottom-halve clubs, where we really failed last season, he'll bring in a No.10 and have Pogba in behind him with Herrera. This won't leave room for a strict DM.

That midfield shape will change in European ties as well, depending on whether we need to turn the temperature high or low in games.

I do agree that the shape will change based on the strength of our opposition but I think Matić will feature in more games than you are suggesting.

Anyway, yeah, we'll see!

It's nice to have the choice now, isn't it?

It'll be perfectly enough to make needed transitions in time, probably even if we'll change manager.

You've hit the nail on the head there. I find it absolutely odd that some people want to win the title now but don't want players at their peak.

It's a bitter anti-United thing. No other team on the planet would be hit with the 'he's past it' when buying a player at 29. United are the kings of Academy graduates in British football, and it's such a success that fans of other clubs are trying to use it to hit us on the head with.
"Ahh...you're buying a 29 year old who has won two EPL titles...eh...eh...but that won't do well for your academy".

It's hilarious watching bitter fans of other clubs, jealous of our dominating successes through their lifetimes - trying to hit us with something...anything. It's actually become my favourite thing about being a United fan, watching the desperate bitterness within others.

We almost have the perfect balance in squad now. A different dynamic on one of the wings would be great. We have some excellent players in those positions, but they're all of similar ilk. Mata/Miki/Rashford/Martial/Lingard - they're all actually converted central players and like to naturally come inside. We could do with a winger who offers more outside the full back and who delivers crosses, especially now we've got Lukaku in the box.

But even with or without a player who offers that; we're gonna be super strong this season. I can't see us conceding many goals at all, such will be our discipline under Mouirnho...it's all about finding that dynamic to create up top..if we click up there, we'll win this EPL and threaten in Europe too. Mourinho is a feckin' master!

Replacing Dembele will be most difficult. Not many cms like that. Spurs look way worse without him in the side

About age nonsense, ffs... He is not just sorting position that we are in desperate need of improving but gives us that little bit of experience that this team lacks at the current moment as the rest of the team is pretty young, entering their peak years or in need of leadership players around them (De Gea, Bailly, Lindelof, Shaw, Pogba, Martial, Rashford, Lukaku...)

So, he makes perfect sense and he brings winning mentality also, with his 2 EPL titles.

There is no problem with the age. He is in the perfect age for this squad. Whether he will be successful or not will be determined by his performances as always is the case with the new player.

It's something we'll have to deal with in due course, obviously.

Declaring 29 to be "peak" age is debateable. But the more important point is that it's not building for the long-term, since you'll be likely be back again looking for a replacement DM in a couple of years.

Dembele is exactly a year OLDER than Matic.

You really are utterly shite at being a poster on football forums. You have such bitterness towards United that you react before you even think, making you look a right eejit, as we say in Ireland.

You clearly haven't watched him the last 2 years. United fans are pretending like Chelsea fans are making up the fact he's been below average the last 2 seasons, especially compared to his form when he first came back to the club. He's 29, but his decline has been so steep he looks way older than that. Everyone's arguing about hypothetical peaks but not taking into consideration the player we're talking about. He played so many games last year because Conte didn't have an alternative. Fabregas can't play next to Kante for 90 minutes every week, simple as that. Go look at how many times Matic came off for Fabregas though. There's a reason Matic was the one coming off, not Kante. But hey, since he played so many games for us, I guess teams should be enquiring about Moses, Alonso, and Cahill.

So true. If you're over 25 now people talk about your age as a problem.

What I find weird is the same people who want us to challenge for the league now also want us to buy players who won't be ready until 2-3 years down the line. We buy an experienced player who has just won the league title and he's too old. Bizarre.

Throwing my hat into the Matic chant ring with a variation of 'Automatic' by the Pointer Sisters.

"No way to control him
He's totally auto-matic
Whenever you're around
(Auto-matic)"

It would certainly be catchy.

Agree fully But better lyrics needed! Plus instead of auto just use full name for me!

Are you joking?

Matic was immense for you guys last season! An immense, constant key cog in a brilliant team that swept to a league title. AN absolute key cog in the best team in England.

That is either a shockingly awful, unloyal post (making you terrible fan of CFC) or just something you're trying to convince yourself because he left you and signed for United. He was brilliant last season, and you know it.

Oh...and to answer your question...how many times did Matic come off for Fabregas in the EPL? five.
