Which is fine, maybe there will be a more suitable player available in two years.

Maybe, or maybe there won't. But either way you'll have another round of player-integration-into-the-squad to go through.

Nice piece of the jigsaw to fill.
Should get a couple of good seasons out of him at least, and Jose will know exactly how to do that.

I think this is an ok signing but not one I can get that excited about. I don't think Matic has the passing range of Carrick and is much more of an enforcer. His age also makes £40 million a lot to pay for him.

That said, it's clearly a position we've needed to fill for a long time and he's a solid if uninspiring option. He should free up the likes of Pogba and Herrera and he's obviously an upgrade on Fellaini. Not a player I'd really have wanted but think he can do a decent job.

What in 4 years time?!

He's perfect for us, he has won the PL 2 out of the last 3 years and is exactly the player we need to fill the DM position. This is the biggest weakness we have in our team, and it's now filled with someone who won't need time to adapt (most likely), doesn't need to develop and will add some well needed experience to a young side.

He's not spectacular (is any DM?!), and he doesn't have an exotic name. But he's the right fit - he's 7 years younger than Carrick, he's going to be a vital cog for 3-4 years. I'm very happy.

Declaring 29 to be "peak" age is debateable. But the more important point is that it's not building for the long-term, since you'll be likely be back again looking for a replacement DM in a couple of years.

We have enough young players to build for the future.

Surprising to see Glaston downplaying this transfer.

You cannot fathom the torment our fellow fan of Cocks goes through this window. On the one hand, it's 'Spurs are not selling to the direct rivals' (vide Walker) so Levy won't sell us Dier, on the other hand however he cannot boast about how Levy done us over with paying ~60-70 mln quid for Dire. Buying Matić just adds to the confusion.

BBC saying medical completed. so this looks done and dusted: now can we please get the winger we've been missing for about four years!

On the contrary, I came to the view that Spurs would not sell Dier and I'm happy that's proved to be the case. It's pretty clear that United tried for Dier, and then went for Matic as 2nd choice.

As will Spurs when Kane, Alli and well everyone else Spurs have that are worth having all leave

Just leaving this here..... He'd better defy all odds and become the next Pirlo and play on at a high level till he's 35. I expect those 2014-2015 stats to return for £40 million.

Maybe Jose thought Dier wasn't worth the money Spurs were asking for and tbf he was part of the team who couldn't cross the final hurdle to win the league whereas Matic was relatively cheaper and won PL twice and having played under him an added advantage. BTW why are you concerned that we have to replace him 2 years, we aren't moving to wembley to be short of funds. If we win the league in these 2 years we can attract more sponsors and sign the best dm ;)

Our first 11 is looking pretty strong at present. Which, if I'm being honest, could quite easily be altered in almost all positions. Such is our strength in depth.

De Gea
Valencia Bailly Lindelof Shaw
Matic
Herrera Pogba
Miki Martial
Lukaku

Jose's long term plan for us is beginning to take shape. The team above has distinctly familiar look to it, a physically intimidating core which is as strong as any other team in the prem, pace and/or power of varying degrees in practically every position on the pitch, bucketloads of creativity in midfield, flair in the form of Martial and Miki(ish) and proven goal scorer up front. Plus, and perhaps most importantly, nigh on impossible to beat. All the hallmarks of a genuine died in the wool Jose Mourinho football team, a title winning one at that.

I haven't been this confident going in to a season for abour 6 years. Honestly feel we can win the league.

@GlastonSpur
We tried to sign Matic last summer long before the Dier links
Youre better than this buddy, you were straight into the Lukaku thread when he signed and you haven't even waited that long with Matic.
Route 1 down the middle huh? :(

Spurs didn't set any price for Dier. They simply said he wasn't for sale and wouldn't be sold.

Last time we bought someone young "building for the future" at DM was Schneiderlin. That went well.

I recall Chelsea buying older Makelele who brought him couple of titles.

RedCafe is populated by the same people hiring for jobs

"we want young people with at least 10 years of experience"

Depends how you view building for the future.

We've got plenty of young talent already. What is important now is that we get experienced heads in to guide them along and help earn trophies so we keep those talented youngsters. That's building for the future.

I'm not convinced buying only potential and inevitably selling it when it reaches its peak because it wants to be at a club that wins trophies is "building for the future".

I genuinely believe we have the best chance to win the league with chelsea losing their star striker, Hazard & pedro might miss few games at the start of season with city having to integrate too many players in the team. Spurs playing at wembley might have an impact. Considering all these things with Jose record in his second at a club we have great chance of lifting the trophy come the end of may.

Glaston turning yet another thread into a finance lecture and a Spurs discussion. :boring:

It was a United fan that brought Spurs into the discussion. This is usually the case: I make an observation - in this case about Matic's age (nothing to do with Spurs) - and then receive one or more replies referencing Spurs.

I'm just happy we're signing a DM. Matic gives us a well balanced midfield and it frees Pogba up to push forward more. I also think Herrera can offer us more than just being a DM. I'm past giving a feck about transfer fees so the price tag doesn't bother me.

In a year or 2 he'll need a hip replacement which is a worry TBH.

I don't think it is actually. We have settled core of our squad from relatively young players. From this point on, we will just buy a couple of players in summers and close the business. With that way, we will be able to spend more on our targets. So, when the time comes that we consider Matic to be old, we will be able to throw a lot of money for the right player. Matic is the perfect transition player in that regard.

Have I commented on Matic's abilities as a player? No. I merely made a point about his age ... a point that several United fans have also made.

Cue outrage. Cue dragging Spurs into the discussion.

Stop talking out of your arse. You made a negative (outrageously pedantic) observation about Matic and his age. Four or five posters responded giving you the time of day (feck knows why) and you have ignored them all, aside from one. These replies were all quite fair, too. Obviously you countered the one you found easiest to counter.

@Kostur responds to @Rado_N referencing Spurs, then you immediately jump on that and pedal some kind of narrative whereby United posters are attacking you and your beloved Spurs.

You see what you want to see and hang around these threads stinking them out. The day you're banned for good will be a great day for debate on here. You're a colossal waste of space and energy.
