What the feck are you talking about? How is 29 not peak age for a DM?

Peak age of 26/27 was in the 1970s...sport science has moved on, my friend. The average age a footbaler retires at now is 35. In the 70s it was 31/32. Peak age for a footballer (especially a DM) is 30/31.

So 29 is the peak age, you say. And then you say it's 30/31. Any advances on 31?

You clearly haven't watched him the last 2 years. United fans are pretending like Chelsea fans are making up the fact he's been below average the last 2 seasons, especially compared to his form when he first came back to the club. He's 29, but his decline has been so steep he looks way older than that. Everyone's arguing about hypothetical peaks but not taking into consideration the player we're talking about. He played so many games last year because Conte didn't have an alternative. Fabregas can't play next to Kante for 90 minutes every week, simple as that. Go look at how many times Matic came off for Fabregas though. There's a reason Matic was the one coming off, not Kante. But hey, since he played so many games for us, I guess teams should be enquiring about Moses, Alonso, and Cahill.

I think if available many teams would like Moses, Alonso and Cahill. Plus the reason Fabregas was brought on for Matic was you were going more offensive and keeping Kante allowed you more benefits than subbing him. I prefer to look at starts and Matic played a vital role in Chelsea's title win. He will come to old Trafford and be an upgrade on Carrick at this stage in a position we lack badly. He brings physical attributes as well as a wealth of experience at a very good age. Plus with his lack of reliance on mobility and pace he may be able to play into his mid to late 30s. Looks a very sensible signing and gives Jose a lot more tactical options and balance in the squad.

4 times. Once before the 75 minute.

So Spurs haven't planned long term as you have 3 players who are around Matic's age.

The difference is that we are not signing new players aged 29. The 3 players concerned have grown older whilst already being with Spurs. Obviously they'll need replacing in due course, either with players already in the squad (e.g. Winks for Dembele) or with new, younger signings.

Dembele is exactly a year OLDER than Matic.

You really are utterly shite at being a poster on football forums. You have such bitterness towards United that you react before you even think, making you look a right eejit, as we say in Ireland.

As I've said, there's a difference between signing players aged 29 and having players who have grown older whilst already being within a squad.

We should propose to Chelsea that the fee be dropped for another 4-5 million due to him turning 29 tomorrow
Actually that's one of his 3 add-on fees. Costs us an extra 5m each if he turns 29, 30 and 31 within the next 5 seasons.

So you think they all will be done in 2 years? I mean players will be done in 2 years? As age is a big concern regarding Matic.

The Matic signing is huge and gives us the perfect platform to perform against all strengths in the EPL. This is something we failed to do last season.

We'll carry two different formations in the EPL.

We'll play like this against the smaller teams who are happy to get a point from us. (Obviously all names are used to show the shape, no interest in any debate about who should be there etc)

...........De Gea.................
.........................................
.......Jones.....Bailly..............
Valencia.........................Shaw
.........................................
.........Herrera.........................
.......................Pogba............
...........Miki...................
.........................................
Mata.............................Martial
..............Lukaku................

And we'll play like this against the bigger boys, with more contained full-backs and wide front men who have more legs. The midfield will also be more disciplined and secure.

Valencia............................Shaw

Rashford..........................Lingard

100% agree.

These posts on player ages.

They are utter nonsense. I blame it on football manager. People talking about resale value and all that cak.

Why do some on the caf care about resale value? We are not a selling club.

Provided Matic comes in and gives us exactly what Mourinho wants from his #6 what does it matter?

People are acting like we didn't sign Zlatan in his 30s? The logic behind some of these posts...Wouldn't have signed Pirlo when Juve did, he was over 30. If you can get a player who will make your manager's system work why would you not do it?

Especially when it comes to a player like Matic, who's playing style involves sitting deep and making minimal movement.

It's not like he's a winger or forward who needs to rely on pace and making runs off the ball.

Matic is entering the prime of his career, and should stay there for another 4-5 years if he avoids injuries.

Are you joking?

Matic was immense for you guys last season! An immense, constant key cog in a brilliant team that swept to a league title. AN absolute key cog in the best team in England.

That is either a shockingly awful, unloyal post (making you terrible fan of CFC) or just something you're trying to convince yourself because he left you and signed for United. He was brilliant last season, and you know it.

Oh...and to answer your question...how many times did Matic come off for Fabregas in the EPL? five.

He was easily one of our worst performers. Go look at TalkChelsea and see where the outrage is. Is it that we're selling "an immense constant key cog" to a rival.... or just concerned the board won't find a replacement because we're thin at CM and haven't been linked with someone? Go look at how invisible he was against Spurs in the FA cup semi. That performance summed up his season. Slow, inept, complete passenger, eventually does something productive (the goal). Conte has done a great job in getting players out of the club (Oscar, Iva, Mikel, Matic) but the board seems to not care about the managers wishes.

Don't agree with those saying Matic is 'entering' his prime. I like the signing but that's a load of bollocks. Physically a players prime is probably 24-28. Not beginning at 29.

This place is becoming very ageist.. !!

Seriously I get the concern over signing a player for £40m at 29 and him having no resale value but there is no guarantee somebody a lot younger, let's say worst case scenario, Pogba will sign a new deal with the club during his five years here and then just walk out on a free.

He will be a great addition to the team.

Entering his prime can include skills, experience... not only physical stuff imo.

Dembele perhaps, at least far as playing for Spurs is concerned. For the others it depends on whether they decline in the way that Matic has. After all, don't you have to ponder the reason why Chelsea have replaced him this summer and were happy to sell?

They wanted him to sign a new contract. The rumours about Matic wanting to leave and join us no less predate rumours of their interest in Bakayoko.

I think you fail to see that Spurs and United are different types of clubs.

Spurs are happy buying young players and grooming them for bigger, richer, more successful clubs to come pick them up. They make decent money in transfers that way, have an exciting young team, and might occasionally come close to a title. Good enough for a club of that size.

The likes of United, Madrid, Barca and the like don't have to operate that way. They are neither stepping stone clubs nor clubs for whom transfer fees are an integral part of their revenue model.

In this context, a transfer like Matic makes sense for United but not Spurs.

They're all different players from Matic, but that's the point - across any number of positions in any number of scenarios, pace isn't really that important. What is universally important is decision-making, composure, consistency and core technique, all of which are obvious strengths of Matic. Let's just hope Mourinho doesn't destroy his confidence again...because he was less than useless in 15/16.

Pace of the player is indeed not that important. But the pace of the ball is...

People are so upset when we are linked with/sign Madrid's "rejects" but are happy when we sign Chelsea's "rejects"?

Because posters always need to find something to whine about.

Reading this thread makes you think we're signing a 60-year-old retired player.

Hope he hasn't gone completely senile and we pay attention to any signs of that on his medical.

Well, it's a point of view I guess. But what I see is that a gang of cyber-bully boys often descend on the heads of any United fan who dares to express an opinion that's contrary to the pre-determined views of the "Mourinho loyalists".

Why are you obsessed with mourinho loyalist. It is a united forum, what do you expect people here to do, bash jose and be pochetino loyalist.

Can't say i'm buzzing over this , but will wait to see what he brings in a reds shirt.

I honestly don't get the re-sale value argument.

Re-sale should only come into it if he's been a failure. That means value is going to drop.

A successful transfer is one getting moved on while on their last legs. No re-sale value at that stage anyway.

I find it very peculiar that a Spurs fan would pay so much attention to United..

How many times does it have to be stated that Chelsea wanted Matic to sign a new contract? He isn't a reject. He isn't a cast off. They wanted him to stay.

I am pretty neutral about this signing. I think we have overpaid. And I hope Jose has got it right.
None of the Chelsea fans I know, spoke good about his current form.

I've got my fingers crossed.

But but but, he is 29 soon, how could they offer him to stay if he is 29?!?! Madness I say, madness!
