Similar to Carrick when he joined in 2006 as just the main transfer for United. Fingers crossed Matic can have a great career at United.

He is a good player but he is on the decline and has been for three seasons according to the stats I've seen . Even Fellaini has better stats than him from last season.

Think the best thing about this transfer is that it will keep us all grounded about our expectations from the club. We are all cautious as it could go either way.

Last time, after purchasing Pogba, Zlatan and Mkhi the expectations were sky high and people expected us to make a title push. In the end, we all came to know that a lot more work was needed.

Slight difference in that Matic played 35 times in the title winning side.

Apart from all the other considerations, he's 1.65m. No way Mourinho buys someone like that.
I keep reading about the height and that Jose doesn't go for short players. Didn't Jose confirm that he wanted Kante last season? Kante doesn't look like the typical DM for Jose going from what I read in the CAF

Excellent player in his first 18 months at Chelsea, that performance against Manchester City he put in was one of the best midfield performances I remember in recent years. But in the last 24 months he's been underwhelming and was probably Chelsea's weakest player last season. In the cup final especially when Kante was having a poor game too I felt Matic got exposed and was torn apart by the movement of Ozil and Ramsey in particular. Think as strictly a defensive midfielder he can be useful but there were better options out there for sure.

It was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek comment, considering his signings for us so far and his love affair with Fellaini. I don't think it's that far off the mark though; he does strongly prefer a certain physical build.

Verratti is not gettable anyway so it doesn't really matter.

As long as we use him in a 3 and ask him to do the job of a defensive midfielder, I think we'll see the best of him. It's putting him in a midfield 2 and asking him to get about a bit where the problems could start, which is the exact inverse of Pogba who will also benefit from being in a 3, as well as the attacking freedom Matic will allow him. This signing complements them both.

He is not wanted by Chelsea and subsequently wanted by us, its that simple. If we aspire to be better than them, it makes little sense buying players who aren't good enough to find a position in their team. He might prove me wrong but my reasoning seems fair, until he proves his worth, this is my stance.... I'm open to the notion than he may prove me wrong within his first game.

Liverpool wouldn't want Lukaku because he doesn't suit their style, doesn't mean he isn't a very good player. Chelsea play with a dynamic mid and a more dynamic creator, Matic isn't suited to their system. We need an anchor to replace Carrick and we play with one. Different strokes. It's hardly the case that we should have bought Bakayoko, he wouldn't have fit the role we were buying for.

I very much hope Matic is not played against weaker opposition and be replaced with a more attack minded player.

Think it will be matic+pogba against the minnows and Herrera added to it in the big games. Something like this

DDG
Valencia-Bailly-Jones-Blind
Matic-Pogba
Mata-Mkhi-Martial
Lukaku

Valencia-Bailly-Jones-Blind
Matic
Herrera-Pogba
Mata-Lukaku-Martial

BBC have quite damning evidence showing Matic's decline.

I don't know as much about him as I should, but from what I can tell, I'm happy with him from a depth point of view. Feels like we're finally moving forward with the midfielders, even if it's not amazingly exciting.

I still think we should be buying at least 2 more players as well as.

Playing a different role, one which wasn't suited to him.

Sorry at work but if you click this link youl find his declining stats with respect to his own performance in previous seasons and with his peers.

Those same stats could suggest that Fellaini is as good a destroyer as Bakayoko, though. Or Herrera is defensively as good as Kante. Think using those 3 numbers alone as evidence of defensive ability is a gross oversimplification.

Yeah sure Matic is declining because he is winning less duels, nothing to do with change of system or anything.

Lets see the POTY and whether he is declining.

Last one is total duels which decreased from 47% to 40%.

Also number of aerial duels won decreased from 1.13 to 0.52.

Kante is clearly on decline.

He was playing alongside Kante. Obviously his numbers wont be as high if there are 2 players doing the same job...

You're citing an article that ultimately concluded:
To measure the value of it, Matic's performances alone should not be considered.

For, if the Serb's arrival gets the best from Pogba, Mourinho will regard the fee as pretty good value.

Damning stuff.
I guess his tackling numbers declined last season because they put Kante next to him instead of Fabregas, so he literally did not need to do that much of the dirty work.
Exactly. Context is everything.

This.

Stats can always tell the story that you want them to tell. Perspective, perception and preference.

Lets give him a chance, just like we will with Lukaku and Lindelof
