Nemanja Matić

Yeah but was Rojo Primera league (Portugal) player of the year? No.
I agree, Matic really shouldn't be considered as we have plenty of suitable DM's already.
but I beg to differ on your assessment. Matic and Schneiderlin are both very capable of making an switching plays and are just as good(bar bosquets) as everyone on that list. In fact, Matic had plenty of experience as a playmaker before being switched to a destroyer position.
Rojo was World Cup's best Lb and one of tbe best defenders in Portugal, only that he's terrible. Im not saying Schneiderlin and Matic are worse than those players, they're just worse on the ball, if we'd play one of them, fine, but if we'd play the both of them, I think we'd create even less than under LvG, they're just average on the ball.

Wasn't Matic one of the prime few who Mourinho named as he threw them under the bus? Is Matic going to be falling over himself to re-join the manager who did that to him?

Given the amount of players we are being linked with probably just a ploy to ensure clubs don't think our options are limited and we'll be rinsed for any one player.

yes, sliced him up in public early in the season. Which is why if find this rumour bizarre

I don't know...this one keeps coming around. It does seem odd to sell to a rival when the top of the Prem looks to be improving, and you'd be reliant on Obi Mikel who must be getting ancient by now.

Wait, he's only 29? Hell, seems like he's been around forever.

Matic is a beast when he's on his game. Haven't followed the saga between him and Mourinho, but not sure it's possible for them to work together again.

I'm all for this transfer as long as the fee isn't outrageous.

At 6ft 4 he'd also add some much needed height to the team.

I'd take the Nemanja Matić that put in the one of the most complete Premier League performances I've seen against City in 2014 at the Etihad. The whole Chelsea team was incredible that night, but that was back when several players would run through a brick wall for Mourinho. Matic was particularly impressive.

Would be a difficult deal to complete though and not a priority.

He's 27 and not that much better than Schneiderlin, I'd rather see Mourinho up his game.

I forgot we got BFS. Considering he cussed the hell out of him last season.. does he have faith he is hungry enough to take us to the top?

He's always struck me as very similar to Schneiderlin.

I rate him but as a big money deal it doesn't make sense and doesn't strike me as one of our priorities. Also I was under the impression he was one of the numerous players Mourinho had fell out with last season.

I'd take him but would will happen to BSF and Morgan?
Bastian will be a bit part player anyway with his age and injury record. An experienced sub to see out a game.

Morgan hasn't proved much in a United shirt. We shouldn't hold off on improving him, though I do think he'll look better under Mou.

Of course... You think this is some sort of personal in house joke...
JM: Lets start the rumor on matic.
RF: But boss you hate matic.
JM: I know HA HA HA HA
RF: Ok! Ok i'll leak it to the press, you evil bassa

But seriously. Seeing as we already have one useless 6'4" midfielder, why do we want another?

I have an soft spot for Matic. He was probably the best defensive CM that Benfica has had in the last 20 years. He dont just destroy the oposition game, he is also capable of transporting the ball at fast tempo, finding perfect passes and has some shot in him as well.
Yes he had an very poor season with Chelsea last year, but so did the team as an all, even Hazard only managed to start scoring in the very last games of the season - it was an very atipical season and would not read much in to it.
If you analise Matic first six months with Chelsea - after being purchased in January - and the following year you can see that he was one of the most important players in their title wining season.
So if he becomes available at the right price I can´t see why United wouldnt go for him.
Ps: dont buy this Mourinho hates him thing, Mourinho gives tough love to his players all the time when they are underperforming in order to provoke an response.

Rojo was never the world cups best left back in a million years.

Apart from Carrick, we don't really have any natural holding midifelders.

As I explained in other threads, Schneiderlin is more of a box to box midfielder, and is definitely better when playing that role, in my opinion.

Playing next to Matic, or any other holding midfielder, will bring the best out of him. Therefore, I would be glad if this is true, although it will be hard to secure Matic's signature.

One bad year and everybody writes him off.

Football fans eh..
He wasn't really all that good before that either to be honest. He had half a good season and everybody hailed him in Chelsea's title winning campaign.
He's good, but for certain types of systems. If Mourinho is going to bring him in, then pairing him with Gomes (Who we are apparently interested in as well) doesn't make too much sense.

His quality isn't in question, the fact he folded like a cheap suit the minute things got tough is the problem, and the fact Jose threw him under the bus makes this most likely bullshit.

Matic would allow us to play a midfield 3 with the triangle pointing back. We don't have any midfielders currently who could manage that job by themselves. For me it makes sense if Rooney is going to be part of the midfield.

Schneiderin would play the role Nicky Butt used to play, coming in to make a more defensive midfield.

For the life of me, I can't see there being anything to this rumour.

If United sign Matić and not Kante I will be baffled.

Then how did he got voted for it? (The BBC version at least).

Have you seen the BBC sports personality of the year awards? Come on you must have watched the World Cup yourself?

As I have stated in the transfer tweets thread, Matic isn't very good. He had a very good first 12 months at Chelsea and faded badly in the second half of the 2014/15 season and got worse in 2015/16 season.

If we are looking at a player of a similar ilk, then we should go for Krychowiak who in my opinion is significantly better.

He does that with most players to be honest. It's his way of showing "Tough Love". He did it with Hazard too.

He threw Özil under the bus too at Real, but most players hold no grudges it seems. I still think it wont happen for several reasons, one being that Chelsea wont sell him.

Fergie has done that in the past. Players need to prove on the field. I think Mourinho does it to players who he expects can produce a lot more than they are showing.

Throwing it out there, as it seems far fetched, but maybe Jose did get sounded out when Chech was sold and Woodward met him at that hotel. Maybe Mourinho orchestrated his move, with Matic his wildcard, he knew if Matic agreed to not put a shift in the team would collapse defensively. Now that he has the United job, Matic also wants to move to us.
