Nemanja Matić

For me at his best he is basically what we wanted Carrick to be.. a more nimble technically gifted Carrick who can take long range shots. A serbian Redondo in terms of style but mentally there are huge question marks about him which makes him closer to a Daley Blind at DM in terms of performance last year. The talent is unquestionable... big strong quick, great eye for a pass, great first touch and dribbling skills in tight spaces.

Apart from Verratti and Busquets.. theres very few DMs out there with his technical quality. He is a combination of deep lying playmaker/destroyer but its all about what is between his ears for me.

But you can also say that about Schneiderlin is you look at prvious season

Carrrick at his best is superior to anything I've seen from Matic.

I like Schneiderlin but he has never shown as much technical ability as Matic. Where Schneiderlin can be better is if he mentally adjusts to playing for United, he seems to have a better engine and is a very grounded type of fella. That might make him the better player if Matic can't ever recover the hunger which made him a star in that first season. In terms of talent it is a one sided comparison in favour of Matic.

Carricks football brain is much superior agreed but in terms of his confidence on the ball when under pressure and his ability to shield the ball and wriggle out of tight situations.. it is very average and Matic and the new breed of DMs are much superior to him in that respect.

One of the biggest reasons why teams who have pressed us like Barca have done well is Carrick at DM not being able to cope with it. In terms of passing ability and defensive coverage.. Carrick is world class but without that dribbling ability in DM in the modern game, you will be a liability at the highest level as you'll either get caught on the ball or pass back time and time again.

English midfielders apart from Scholes I.e. Gerrard and Lampard also struggled with this. Whereas guys like Xavi and Pirlo highlight just how important being comfortable with the ball at your feet can be in the centre of midfield.

For me Mourinho underestimated this concept whilst at Real Madrid by sometimes using guys like Pepe or Khedeira in midfield. You can't use donkeys like that against quality possession sides even if your gameplan is to counter attack. You need guys like Javi Martinez, strong defensively but very comfortable on the ball.

At Southampton he looked good technically. Remember him making many runs with the ball and lot of nice foot work in tight spaces. Don't remember how good his first touch was though.

The schneiderlin we have looks nothing like the one who was very good and was one of the best in the league.

Technically Matic is till superior though.

I like Matic but we have no needs for him. If we play aggressively Schneiderlin and Herrera can do the trick, at least I know that managers like Fergie, Bielsa or Simeone would make them work perfectly because they don't like passivity and therefore have no time for pure DMs, I would like to see Mourinho follow their example.

Matic when on form would be amazing and I think the whole Chelsea team had a shocker last season because something behind the scenes had upset Mourinho at the start of the season and he completely took his eye off the ball and so did everyone.

I just can't see how Chelsea would sell Matic to one of their biggest rivals for a top 4 place........With Mata it was different as Jose knew Moyes was going to pay silly money for a player that Jose felt would not improve us at all.......Matic it's a very different scenario but for crazy money then you never know

Matic is a good player, remember he had some incredible games including City away. Did lose it this season though.
