Negotiating with a player today

I never really watched many Chelsea games last season, so I can't really comment. But when I have seen him play, he's never made me really sit up and think "Well, he's a decent player". SAF knows what he's doing, so I'll go with it if it's true.

I would have no problem if we signed Rio and Gallas, and didn't sign a striker or midfielder this year. Defence is the #1 priority, and having a solid partnership will be the difference for us next year.

If unfortunately we could not get Rio, would the signing of Gallas be enough?

Not saying it does but our defence was just horrific last season and we need a bit more than only Gallas to fix it IMO..

Just because the one real "big name player" that we've bought has turned out a class A flop, it doesn't mean that this will happen in the future..we need to buy the right players..

That depends on how Gallas plays. (if we sign him).

yes..the defence is major worry.. however, we need a foward up front that can help create/score goals against liverpool type opposition... we've failed too many times last year against this style of play...

so ...one CB and Ronaldo please. ;)

But how do we know that signing of Rio will suit us? If we get him and (touch wood) he did not performed as expected?

Gallas, would be great, but the other defensive signings don't necessarily have to be CB's - silvestre looks likely to be replaced, and Rustu Recber is still a possibility.

yeah but that goes for ANY new signing....

just got word that whatever is happening on july 5th is off till monday

There's a risk in everything, bla bla, yes Gallas is hardly a huge name, bla bla, but niether were Bruce and Pally or if you wish, Hyypia and Henchoz.

Defence is so more more than having one of the four of five centerbacks in the world there. You can have the best 4 individuals in the world playing bad defence or four good players playing a great defence.

Gallas wouldn't be a bad choice for us, especially as he can perform at any position at the back. But we would need another player the for defence.

Thats assuming any of this Gallas nonsence has any truth to it at all.

Sounds like the 'Desailly is coming' of around January 2002. What a load of cr*p that was.

so would signing a player worth 20 million above justify it?. Frankly I don't really mind SAF buys someone unknown cheaper.

Rio has been tried and tested on every level, be it PL level, CL level or international level and he's impressed wherever he's played..

He's English so won't have communication problems and we already know he gets along well with the United lads who play for England, plus he seems someone who has a comfortable personality so I think that signing him, even for such big a fee, is a rather riskless purchase..

Of course there's no 100% guarantee that he'd be a success but I can't think of anyone better suited to United than him..

Agreed but I think that any good defence needs a reallt great CB in it in order to be one..

And Rio would be that IMO

why does that type of cash bother you??? United have to be in the market for the best... and i reckon there are not many better than Rio...

The problem is you're assuming there was nothing in the rumour just because Desailly didn't actually come..

You're right. I don't. Niether does any one else from this forum. But the comments in the forum remind me as such. 'He was seen with United official'...

Yeah, whatever. I've lost my sense of 'building up hope' years ago.

No, just thinking that sometimes other club just treat United as a water fish!(purposely hiking up the price because of United)

I think there were some truth in the rumours... and i've noticed that Fergie talked to Desailly after the chelsea match at OT, like they 'know' each other....

There are probably over 100 rumours throughout a year and yes, unless I see otherwise, my first assumption is there's nothing in them.

Why should I believe this anymore than the 'we're in for Buffon' of a couple of weeks ago?

Cause some rumours do seem a bit more likely than others..

BTW None of the newspapers have picked up on the story yet, in fact we're still the only site reporting it - its probably bollocks.

what Amir wrote might be true. It just that the rumours keep flying everywhere until you feel numb about it after a certain stage.

Fergie also said he went to told David James "Your form will be back" after he handed us the win at Anfied in 1996/7. Is he close to him too?

Come on...
