Our defense was shit last season, will Gallas on his own improve it? Slightly. Would Duff instead of Giggs improve it? Sometimes. Would Duff up front with Ruud improve it? Ole didn't exactly do too bad. If we're going to improve our defense then more than one out of the back five has to change, and I still predict that will happen. And if we have a midfield four of, say, Duff Keane Veron and Beckham, then we might still be out fought by arsenal and liverpool in that area again.

But what do you reckon? Would you like to see us sign him for less than £10m?

Yeah, that is very true. However, we are no longer the leading team in the country, and I don't think throwing money at any good player will get us back there. I rather see us re-group and build for the medium to long term instead of quick-fix solutions.
We do have the players NOT to be outfought in midfield - the question is if they will be used in the right way.

John Terry is a lot better.
That would make central defence a little over-crowded wouldn't you think? Unless Gallas is brought in to cover the full-back positions as well.

If there's any truth in the £7.5 clause, he may prove to be a good signing. But it's a risk, and risks don't make people happy. What the fans want is a big-name, I however, want a solid defence.
From what I've seen of Gallas, he could provide it. However, I am not claiming to have seen much of the player, so Im staying on the fence, so-to-speak.

I don't think we'll buy Nesta or Rio for the kind of money that's being mentioned. And I can't see Leeds selling Rio for less than £25m, considering they bought him for £18m.
However, I can see us buy Gallas + AN Other for about £20m between them (Ayala would cost about £12m...)

The news that is said to 'shock' is related to a current united player...
how many times do I have to repeat this?

Every signing is a risk.
I too want a solid defence, and I don't reckon buying ONLY Rio or Nesta for stupid money would create a solid defence.
I watched Chelsea quite a few times last season, and their centre defence 'always' looked solid.

Agreed, but I still think Rio will be the main one. And I still think, and hope, Veron will be sold giving cash for further strengthening.

If we get Duff, I wouldn't mind us selling Veron to finance a move for Rio - and by that still leave funds for another defender.

The Rio situation depends on the new manager. It's still unlikely he'll come, because the PLC won't spend 30m or more. Again, selling Veron to finance it would go against Fergie's stubborn streak (his obsession with proving doubters wrong is the most predictable aspect of his personality).
I still think 2/3 signings will be it. It now looks increasingly like Gallas, probably Duff and if something turns up ANOther (unlikely).
I think Fergie must believe in both Brown and O'Shea. If he doubted either, he'd go get another CB (which, again is unlikely).

i'd be surprised if we dished out 35mil...
i reckon we'd get him for 26-28 mil.

Perhaps but from the article that was posted earlier in this threade it seems the reason he was unsettled was because Ranieri kept changing him between different positions, not because he doesn't like this or that position. Maybe if he was promised the LB/RB position at United then he'd be happy with that.
This is just pure speculation though. I dunno, it just doesn't seem to me like he has enough charisma to be "the one" to "rescue" us. Rio is. We DO need 1 big name IMHO.

No, I was impressed with his CB performances. He played there for large parts of the season, as Desailly was out injured a lot.

I can't remember where he was playing each time I watched Chelsea, just that I was impressed with his poise and defending ability. He's a classy player and will improve greatly if allowed to play next to an intelligent and experienced player like Larry White.

But big name does not usually guarantee success.
