and what looked to me like William Gallas of Chelsea was coming out accompanied by Jim Ryan and a couple of other fellas I didn't recognise.

No word of a lie on this one either, stands to reason though with Chelsea being short of a bob or two and us in the hunt for a centre back.

Gallas, Blanc, Mickey and Barthez at the back anyone?

If it is Gallas, it makes sense. If we spend £20-30m on Rio, Thuram or Nesta, it won't leave much money left for an attacker, which I'm quite sure Sir Alex is quite keen on bringing in.

agree gallas is top notch, imo he was rent boys best player last season plus hes young, anything under 10mil is a steal

Time WILL tell, i've heard this GALLAS story else where i personally hope there is truth in it ... he's a class act it was shocking that he didn't go to the world cup instead of le beouf.

PS: i'd just like to say that i mentioned gallas as a good signing at the end of last season as he was/is un happy at chelsea - and the reception i got wernt great ..... i'm watching for turncoats ! (kemo)

I thought he was great at Chelsea last season, but didn't think we would have a chance of signing him as he's only been at The Bridge for a year.

Personally I'd be happy if we signed him but only if we signed one more CB to go along with him.

We won't sign two CB's now that Blanc has re-signed. And I hope we don't, because that would prevent O'Shea and Brown from proving themselves on this level.

Short-term I agree with you, Thuram would be better. But it's a balancing act in terms of current player resources (i.e. Brown and O'Shea), long and short term, and using transfer funds at other areas.

I don't think we will be spending more than £30m this summer, so if we buy Thuram, Rio or Nesta, that woul limit us IMO.

Chelsea fan here reckons Gallas has a clause in his contract..

Along the lines of if someone offers over a certain amount he can talk to them...

Bryan Robson can confirm such clauses exist... ;)
 
I don't see Wes as someone who has a chance of being a future world-class CB I'm afraid..

He's talented but physically he is suspect and more importantly, mentally he is just not stable enough for this level IMO

I don't think I've seen him play more than 2-3 really, really good games..

He's had good games but he can never keep his concentration running for a whole game..

I have the same worries about Brown as you have, which is a shame, because he's got the skills and physical attributes to become a top-notch defender. However, I do think it would be a crime not to give him a chance to prove himself this season in a (hopefully) stable defense and without him being disrupted by injuries. Only after such a season I reckon we can judge him fairly.

Agreed, and we know that Alex rates him very highly. Rio wasn't rated that much just a year or two ago, but players develop when they get to play regularly in a stable back 4. Gallas isn't just a centre back though is he? I certainly wouldn't want us to just rely on him as a CB to improve our defense, even if he is a very good and promising player.

Well I can't see him getting a real run in the team if we sign another CB..which isn't going to help him or his confidence..

From what I've seen Alex tried his best to play him in as little matches as he could towards the end of last season and this summer we've been liked to every CB and his dog so that doesn't really show Alex rates him..

Like an unimportant match at Leverkusen we had ;)

Sorry, I haven't seen any clues to Fergie having any problems with Brown. Whenever Ronny was fit he'd partner Blanc because they were our best partnership, but after Brown returned from injury, he'd normally be the man to step in if Johnsen was missing.
