NBA 2015-2016

Why not? He is one of the most efficient PFs out there.

I'm no expert on him, I'll just start with that. When I've watched him he's taken a lot of jump shots and didn't use his size to get easy buckets around the rim as much as I would want from someone that big and relatively quick. With the NBA moving towards small-ball recently, and moving away from shooting and towards slashing to the rim and getting to the foul line in the last 15 years, a player like him is at a disadvantage. The ridiculous 'Mark Jackson' rule that means you can't grind someone in the post anymore, is a big part of that.

But maybe he gets to the rim all the time and just not in the games I've seen.

The game is made these days for a guy like LeBron, who can get to the rim against anyone. Do I think LA is a top player? Definitely. I'm more worried about an aging Parker and Ginobli than I am that LA won't do his part. Is Duncan coming back? I adore Pop, I was a Bulls fan during Jordan's reign and have always been a Lakers fan, and I think Pop is better than Phil Jackson, no question in my mind. So I'm not underestimating him, he can definitely get that team to the finals and even win it.

But Golden State should be better next year as well. Should be a fun season.

Always nice to see Big Ten players doing well in the NBA. Best fundamentals of any division.

Keith Appling is burning it up, and showing many teams screwed up passing him over, just like Draymond Green, which I pointed out here at the time.

Brandon Dawson also undervalued and underdrafted, class guy, he'll have a long NBA career, health permitting.

MSU is pure class, Izzo a legend.

Izzo was at one of the GS Memphis games to see Draymond and Z-Bo go at it. Great coach and guy.

I don't watch Portland's games (other than when they play my team), but from what I've seen from his highlights, he does post up and goes to the rim occasionally. Also, his mid-range jump shots are high percentage shots for a guy like him, just like Dirk's fadeaway jumper goes in 9 times out of 10. He's not afraid to use his size either. His defence is quite decent too. He's just what the Spurs needed IMO.

I have this idea in my head that you have to build a team around a certain sort of player these days to win it all. Let's look at the teams that have won the last 12 titles, and the best player on the team:

'15 - Warriors, Steph Curry
'14 - Spurs, Tony Parker
'13 - Heat, LeBron James
'12 - Heat, LeBron James
'11 - Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki
'10 - Lakers, Kobe Bryant
'09 - Lakers, Kobe Bryant
'08 - Celtics, Paul Pierce
'07 - Spurs, Tony Parker
'06 - Heat, Dwayne Wade
'05 - Spurs, Tim Duncan
'04 - Pistons, Chauncy Billups
'03 - Spurs, Tim Duncan

We have:
4 lead by slashing, shooting PGs (Parker, Curry, Billups)
4 lead by slashing, shooting SGs (Kobe, Pierce, Wade)
2 lead by slashing, shooting SFs (all LeBron, some would argue he's a PF but he doesn't play like one)
1 lead by a slashing, shooting PFs (Dirk)
2 lead by a posting, shooting C/PF (Duncan)

Championships, recently, have not often been built around a player like LA. However, Pops is the perfect team coach, and he has shown he can win any way he needs to.

Spurs ,System*
06 - Heat,Wade (Lebron was in Cleveland, but I'm guessing that was a mistake...lmao) and Shaq to an extent
Celtics, big 3
Pistons, solid starting lineup,Sheed might have been the difference
Warriors - role players
13 - Heat, big 3 + Allen.

I agree the system is the star for the Spurs, and so they can win with any players as their best, it seems. Pistons also were very much a team is the star type, very balanced.

Thanks for the correction.

You're half right though, you need a superstar to get to the finals.

Well except Detroit, they cant land one so they try to assemble tough teams (usually takes a decade or 2).

Shame if this plagues his career. The kid has serious talent.

@gooDevil Even in years he did not win the Finals MVP Duncan has been the Spurs most important player for all of the titles.

I definitely think there is an argument for that, though perhaps not the last one. But for me the Spurs (and Pistons) are the recent anomalies to the rule of superstars win titles, so whether Duncan or Parker was more instrumental is a bit aside the point.

Even in recent years there has been a dramatic dropoff when Duncan was off the court that did not exist for Parker or any other Spur especially defensively. Duncan is the reason the Spurs are an elite team.

Wonder if Clips can trade Lischuck for Rio and Birdman. That would give them some of the depth they desperately need.

Duncan was a superstar, TP was a top 3 PG in the league. Don't let the system talk fool you, as we saw without a healthy TP Spurs lost in the first round.

That's true enough. Though I think as they all aged, the system helped to get more out of them than most would.

Or CP3 will lose his mind whilst DeAndre Jordan and Josh Smith throw up stupid shot after stupid shot.

 I forgot about Lance, it's all gonna go tits up for the Clippers at some point.

Clippers will be nice to watch this year. Wonder if they'll make it to the playoffs before Pierce and CP3 wants to kill Lance and Smith.
