gooDevil, are you a Celtics person? Your list was very heavily biased towards them. Obviously I object to Russell but Sam Jones wouldn't sniff a top 20 NBA rankings and McHale/Parrish would likely be on the outside looking in as well.

I haven't really seen this new defensive minded Melo I've heard about, I've seen some of the Knicks but I wasn't really watching for that. But even if he has become defensively tight, half a season of playing defense doesn't score huge for me, nor does starting a season with a good record.

I reserve the right to change my opinion going forward, but it's Garnett's team that has had the most recent success, and came closest to beating the Champions in the playoffs last season.

Melo may score more points, but Garnett's offense is still very good, and he could chuck up 25 shots a game too, if he thought it was good for his team. Honestly I'd rather have Garnett on my team.

I'm not a fan of Melo, and I certainly don't rate him that highly (because of his defense), but if he had a normal night (by his standards) against the Celtics, the Knicks would have won it comfortably. Garnett knew that, that's why he resorted to those cheap tactics.

Garnett can still play obviously, but at the moment, Melo is just a better overall player IMO.

Sacre is pushing Kwame Brown and Smush Parker for the worst Laker players I've ever seen.

The defense is pathetic. It's like the D you get in the all-star games where no one plays defense. Too many turnovers again. Remarkably we're only 9 points behind.

The bench for once is contributing thus far. This will end in another loss.

85 points conceded in 3 quarters. If they want, I believe OKC or Miami could put up 140 on this laker side.

Somehow we are still in this game. But as has been the case for almost every game this season, everytime we get close to the opponents they pull ahead and inevitably win the game.

Kobe has hit two shots from 5-pt land. Unfortunately there is no such thing so he only gets 3 points for each attempt.

Laker ball, need a 3 to tie....

Please score.

Well that was an entertaining loss.

Lakers at least showed some fight and effort to get back into this game in the 4th. At times we played good D but overall it was still too poor to win games. Earl Clark was impressive.

5 defeats in a row and next up is OKC. We're fecked.

I can't believe what's happening to the Lakers now.. I really thought they would sweep everyboy this year when got Howard..

But don't forget, Miami also began with a 9-8 record or something like that.. They will get better..

If you just added Steve Nash to last year's team they'd be Western contenders easily. But adding Steve Nash and replacing Bynum for Howard, you're almost set for the NBA Finals.

What is troubling is of course something everyone already knows: Hiring D'Antoni without a defensive specialist assistant ( Nate McMilan ), instead of a tried, tested and proven Phil Jackson who was ready to coach this Lakers team to a last haul before he finally retired.

Now Phil's not coming back to basketball anymore and they're stuck with D'Antoni, who by the way is a great coach. They just need someone to work on the defensive side of things and they'll be way ahead of this Brazil mentality that gave them 0.4+++

Mitch or the cnut jimmy should hire a defensive coach and tell D'Antoni to swallow his pride and accept he needs help with D. It seems the whole Phil fiasco was Jimmy's attempt to get one over on Phil rather than look at what was best for the team.

If the Lakers miss the playoffs, which I expect them to do, what happens? Do they keep D'Antoni even if the players don't fit his system or do they start afresh again?

D'Antoni is not a great coach. He's a great basketball mind but his reluctance to accept a defensive philosophy and employ it keeps him from greatness. For me he's like a Norv Turner - great offensive mind perfect to be second in command but a terrible head coach. He's the current era's version of Don Nelson though Nellie was definitely a much better coach and personnel management guy.

Miami's coach believed in defense! And with two of the game's premier players in their prime it was always going to come around to winning performances.

I still say they should blow it up at the trade deadline, deal Howard to Brooklyn, get some youth in return, and go from there.

This please. What this Lakers team needs is role players who are willing to hustle and play defence. Someone like Noah would be perfect, but there's no way the Lakers can get him.

That's a tough one, there are some really amazing players in the history of the NBA. The top 10 is nearly impossible to break into.

1. Bill Russell
2. Michael Jordan
3. Wilt Chamberlain
4. Oscar Robertson
5. Magic Johnson
6. Larry Bird
7. Jerry West
8. Kareem Abdul Jabbar
9. Hakeem Olajuwon
10. Julius Erving

And of course some will disgree, and perhaps have Shaquille O'Neal, Patrick Ewing, Moses Malone, David Robinson, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan or someone else. Pete Maravich, Sam Jones, John Havlicek, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Karl Malone, Steve Nash and LeBron James are all hanging around the next 10.

But I think you have to find room for Garnett in that 10-20 group, or at least the top 30 if not.

Russel as Number 1. Are you Simmons in disguise? Actually, even he won't go to that level.

I am sorry goo, but any list that doesn't have MJ as the number 1 is plain wrong. Unless this one is not in order. Also, I think Duncan deserves to be in the top 10 somewhere.

My Dad is a big basketball fan, and he saw Russell and Jordan both play, he's converted me. Of course they're very different players, but it's hard to argue with 11 titles.

Great comparison to Norv and I completely agree. But to be fair, D'Antoni's resume is still pretty impressive.

In regards to Howard, no thanks, you guys can keep him. We don't need 2 underachieving crybabies. One is plenty enough.

How did Sarcemento get the Kings in the first place?

It was such a small market and they left a good bit of history in Kansas City granted the club had relocated twice before.

Dwight Howard obviously isn't fully recovered from his back injury/surgery, he probably shouldn't be playing, and focusing on rehab. It might mean this season is a wash, but if he's fully fit for the beginning of next season then I don't mind.

Even if Dwight was only 70-80%, which everyone near him and he himself is clamoring, Lakers should still be winning games.

With a core of Kobe, Nash, Gasol and a rejuvenated MWP, you really shouldn't be uncertain about making the playoffs.

The remaining games for the Lakers:

Red: away against a playoff team* = 13
Dark Red: home against a playoff team = 13
Dark Green: away against non-playoff team = 11
Green: home against a non-playoff team = 10

* (according to the current standings)

The Lakers will need to win a few of the big ones (away at a playoff team, although have to say not all of them would be awfully difficult for them) and they have to protect their home court as well (currently 10-8)..

I don't think they are in danger of missing the playoffs (they would probably need around 30 more wins out of the remaining 47 games).. They just need a winning streak to get their confidence back.. Probably the end of January is a good time to start one (having Howard, Gasol, Hill around that time will help as well)..

And of course they need to start playing some defense.. Although they can still do well and make the playoff with minimum defense, like D'Antoni proved before. Having Kobe on you side can also help you grind out wins in clutch time even when your defense was horrible for 3 quarters.

NBA on Sky which is the best news ever. Surprised it's not been mentioned. Anyway get the feck in. First game 17th Jan

Didn't know that! Any idea how long the deal is for and how many games we'll get?

They'll show games in the weekend (Sunday double header?), a few other games during the week I think, the conference finals and the NBA finals.

Excellent! Appears that the deal is only until the end of the season, hopefully Sky get a long-term deal in place and we get more NBA games on UK tv.

Nope, never been a Celtics fan.

I made the list rather hastily, I looked at the NBA top 50 page on wiki and picked what I thought were the best players based on reputation, I definitely never saw Sam Jones play.

McHale and Parish are legends, though, in my mind. I did see them play, and they were amazing. McHale I have no doubt over, and Parish is 20th all time in points as a 3rd option on of the greatest teams ever.

I should have added James Worthy, but being a Lakers guy I didn't want to appear biased.

It has nothing to do with 'resorting', trash talk is part of the game, and you can be sure that Melo isn't the only one who gets some thrown at him.

Niggling fouls and little pushes are also part of the game, and if that threw him off then it's Melo's problem, no KGs.

But I've never been a big fan of Melo, he can score no doubt, but that's not that special really. Plenty of guys could get 20+ a night with 20+ shots.

No. No he isn't. Off the top of my head, MJ, Bird, Magic, Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem, Hondo, Dr. J, Barkley, Robinson, Kobe are all better. Then among active guys, LeBron is a lock to pass him (I think LeBron will possibly surpass MJ as #1) and I think Chris Paul and Kevin Durant could too.

Bill Russell wasn't nearly the player Wilt Chamberlain was. Not even close.

I'm sorry, but that's just silly.

Barkley? Havlicek? You may be the only one in the world that would suggest that.
