Farewell Nani

I'll always remember when you stood up vs Bayern

and this...

and please tell me who in our current squad is capable of the above?

I think a goal scored 5 years ago isn't the strongest argument for keeping a player.

No disrespect to the Portuguese league but this should be used as a real wake up call to Nani. I hope he gets his act together there so other clubs will show interest.

Who the hell can tell me if we are paying his full wages or 3/4? I know it doesn't make too much a difference but I still want to know! That 'free of charge' in the Sporting statement just means that we won't get a loan fee.

A case of what could have been. Genuinely talented player. Such a shame all that talent went to waste. Two footed, brilliant technique, more than capable of a stunning belter or an outrageous dribble through the heart of the opposition's defence, a threat cutting in and out wide with his good deliveries as well. He just about had everything in his locker needed to be a brilliant player bar consistency. The thing I hated most about him was his regular potshots from 20-30 yards which would go to Row Z with an alarming frequency. The bollocking he got from Rooney at times .

Well at least he won 4 titles with us and a Champions league medal as well. Something you can't exactly say for most of our rivals players :D. I hope fans remember that as infuriating as he was at times, he was equally brilliant at times as well. Hope he regains some sort of form and confidence at Sporting Lisbon and goes on to have a good career be it at United or not.

I think it speaks volumes to the fact that there is no one in the squad (with the possible exception of Januzaj) capable of pulling off such magic.

The point is, Nani is no longer capable of it, either.

He hasn't been capable of it for a long time. He he beat a couple of players and then got lucky with the keeper pushing his cross into the net. 5 years ago. It's not close to being a good reason for keeping him. He's been unwanted by three managers now. Despite clearly being on the market for some time nobody has been willing to take him off our hands. It's not a conspiracy against that some here act like. He just hasn't been good enough or do a job for the team.

Not good enough. First of a few who need shifting from the squad.

Not bothered at all anymore, I think its best for all parties that he moves on.

I do find it really weird that he came on against Swansea though. Hardly got a look in in pre-season, played like crap when he did, got subbed after half an hour in one match, then gets thrown on in our league opener, and is moved on a few days later. It makes no sense.

that might be your point... but you have to admit that mine still stands.

and no I never suggested that he was that player anymore.

and as I stated our squad currently lacks a player capable of that direct match changing skill...

please don't say Rooney as a response.

Are you seriously trying to argue that Rooney isn't capable of beating two players and lobbing a goalie? Or Mata? Or RvP? Get real.

If you disagree and argue that none of those players are capable of it, well, neither is Nani. So what difference does it make that he's left?

No utd player that I can remember ever tore apart Bayern like Nani did. The reason he became one of my favourite players is because of his incredible dribbling skills. He was constantly double-marked. Hopefully the fans at Lisbon will show him far more respect than we ever did.
How he never won the player of the year award in front of Bale was a travesty.
I for one will miss him.

He took absolutely the most shocking corners I've seen for us. 9/7 were hitting the first man. He had the confidence to do it in cool manner 10times a match and waste a good number of direct freekicks as well... just because of that I am quite glad he is off.

Sad to see him go, but he probably needed a fresh start (of sorts) for his career. Still think he would have been useful to keep around this season, especially if LVG plans on moving to a 4-3-3 at some point.

Hopefully he scores 20 goals and we get a decent fee for him next summer. Good luck in Portugal Nani, shame about the last couple of years, at one point he was a top class winger. Quite sad to see him go to be honest.

Never seemed to get his head right after the injuries started to come on, starting with that one from Carragher iirc.

Guess I'll have to find a new player to be a fanboy apologist for. Rojo seems a good candidate...

My favorite United player between January 2010 - May 2012. Prior to he showed glimpses but was very frustrating and kicked up a fuss. Once he got his head down he reached levels where he was the best winger in the league. Injuries and in my view lack of motivation has curtailed his United career. He's at his best in a fast tempo team, and for someone who is perceived as mentally fragile, he was a big game player.

I would have liked to have seen what Van Gaal could do with him.

Already taken, by Cina.

Forever in Ronaldo's shadow.

Same age (ish), same team, same nationality, same sort of breakthrough profile.... Ronnie has shone, Nani's light has dimmed. Shame for him but he didn't seem to do much in the last 24 months.

Needed to leave for his own sake, never mind United needing to get rid.

Really hasn't done a single thing of note for club for at least 2 years which is just mental. Seems to suffer a large amount of muscular injuries, and it could be as simple as less pressure/change of scenery which lets him have a fresh start.

Shame he/we couldn't tie down a permanent move.

He will be back next summer, just as Anderson returned back from Fiorentina. Even if United gave him a free transfer, Sporting won't be able to pay his wages.

Despite not setting the place a light in recent years (to say the least) you can only imagine we're confident of securing another winger/wingback this summer with letting him go out on loan. Options on the wings haven't been great in a while, and if the 352 doesn't take and we have to switch to a 442/433, then we're going to need a significant signing on the wing, short of using our many number 10s in wide positions.

he was so good at one point that I would rather have 2010-11 and 2011-12 Nani over any other winger in the world, including Di Maria, Ribery, and Robben. in those two seasons he was just the player we need and he's still pretty young. ofc, if he was capable of retaining that level of form, we wouldn't be letting him go now.

not the best goal, but it's my favorite:

:(

shame.

Had to go and take a nap. My sadness is palpable, separation anxiety is creeping in. I will try to monitor his progress at Lisbon.

Had the talent to be great but ultimately turned out to be a very ordinary player.

His time here was done anyway, hopefully this deal works out for both us and him. Says a lot that his leaving will have no real impact on us though.
