Nani | Contract & Transfer talk

Only flashes? He was probably the best player in the PL for an 18 month spell, and not bad the season after either.

Nani may have had a big fall from grace in recent years but I feel it's highly unfair to say he only had 'flashes' and 'patches', and as some seem to be saying, never fulfilled any promise, when that's just not true. He was a massive contributor to some very successful years at this club. I have way more appreciation for him than, say, Anderson, or Berbatov.

Good post.

He's been here seven years and maybe shown his true quality for about eighteen months in that time. I'd say that was patchy. He should now be in his peak years but if he was that good and United were willing to listen to offers why is there not a queue round the block for him?

I wish him well but I'm not gutted he's going. If he sets the world on fire at Sporting, he might even be back.

Well, he joined very young, so it was always going to take 2-3 years to actually become consistent. I'd say he was then fantastic for 18 months but still had a very good season the year after that too, so basically the crux of 2 1/2 years at a high level. Since then he's definitely dropped considerably (thought I'll always argue that's largely because of injuries and a lack of appearances), but I definitely don't think a period of 18-30 months at the top is 'patchy' at all. It was an extremely strong, prolonged spell of football. It's more than we've gotten from many players here.

What's really disappointing for me is how far he's fallen, like, outrageously so. To put it another way, if in 2012 we'd sold him for around £30m, people would've been livid. Now people are happy to see him go on loan to Sporting. Quite sad, really.

And then there were 3. Anderson, Carrick, Rooney. Ando & Nani look good as gone anyway, which leaves the ever ageing Carrick and Rooney from the team of my childhood.

From last season, were there any performances where Nani actually performed well?

He hasnt been "in form" for a while now.
Same could be said about Valencia, Young, Zaha...
Not to mention the other dross like Cleverley, Welbeck, Kagawa, Anderson, Fellatio, etc.

There's about 9 other players I'd get rid before Nani.

Anyways...

Alternatively, we could've allowed LvG a chance to revitalize him. At 27, he isn't likely to return to us, and this is going to end up little more than the first step to a permanent move to Sporting or elsewhere, which makes paying his salary galactically daft (if true). In essence, we got Rojo for however many millions and lost Nani for nothing, and on top of it, still get to pay his wages even though he's not playing for us this year.

It's an amazing deal... for Sporting

I would as well. I would get rid of all of the above except Kagawa.

Always rooted for Nani but injuries and inconsistency over the past couple of years really ruined his United career. Still hope he plays himself into form again and we can then have a nice problem on our hands next year in either cashing him in or adding him back to the side. Good luck 17.

No shit. A free player whose wages are paid by another club. Unless Rojo turns out to be a world beater of Vidic proportions, we've been shafted.

I think we already have. You heard of Rojo before the world cup and would we have paid 16m for him then? But we need bodies at the back who can at play the 3-5-2 decently, so fingers crossed.

Out of all the "inconsistent" players in our roster, Nani and Chicharito were the only ones that have generated serious interest. Juve, Inter, had a hard-on for Nani, ands everal Spanish teams for Chicharito.

Given Ed's incompetence, I wouldn't be surprised to see Chicharito loaned out to Pachuca with us paying his salary.

While we give a new contract to TC23

So we're paying 100% of his wages yet he's playing for Sporting...

I guess if it inflates his price for sale then fair enough, or if he gets game time to actually become the player he was a few seasons back consistently then again worth it.

But surprised they are not paying a % seems ridiculously good deal for Sporting!

Why Moyes ever thought "Hey give that guy a 5 year contract" I will never know

To increase his selling value, I actually agree that this is a rather good deal for Sporting, they sell a decent but unfinished player for 16 million and get a player that may regain some kind of form.

If Nani has a good season with us, United will also profit from it. I doubt Nani will play for United again but if he has a good season, United could sell him for a good price. Our games are always full of scouts. Who knows perhaps Nani can turn things around and move to another big club at the end of the season. Wouldn´t surprise me if Juventus comes for him.

Agreed. He wasn't leaving this summer on a permanent transfer without a significant wage contribution and the Italians weren't going to pay anything other than a fire sale price. This deal is our best chance of getting some value out of him.

Is that right we're paying his wages for the loan? Seems a bit bizarre.

It looks like the Rojo/Nani deal has been great for Sporting. I'm not complaining - we got what we needed. There are probably good business connections between both clubs. Do you have any other up and coming talent we could get?

William Carvalho and Carlos Mané. Of course it was due to the good relationship between the clubs. I don´t think United would be so generous to other clubs. Mind we already had a cooperation agreement in 2003. Who knows perhaps we will have another one soon.

So when do Sporting next play? Hopefully Nani goes straight into the starting line up.

We play at home to Arouca. Should be an easy game. Nani will probably play in the last 30 mins or something. But we go to Benfica´s stadium after the Arouca game and he should be a starter there.

Can we get William Carvalho for 20m and Anderson loan? We will pay his wages, please...

Note the tag line, very apt.
Given by @Top who is a Nani fanboi. Yeah, but it's me who is wrong about him, not people who keep saying "although he hasn't been on form for xxx years, he's the only player who can produce that magic moment". Hehe.

I like this deal because Louis van Gaal's vision for United likely includes wingers even if it means RVP has to sit on the bench next season although he would make a fantastic second choice striker.

This way if Nani has a good season then he would add depth to our wingers, what a chance he has to get his confidence back.

But you see other than the few people who don't know how to read, no one is saying we are paying his wages. Saying there is no loan fee isn't he same as us paying his wages.

So BBC is just making up stuff? Thought they were one of the most reliable sources in England.....

We are paying the whole of his fecking wages to pay for another club!???? What on earth!?

Glad to see him go.

It's incredible how poor our squad has become and how much dross needs to go.

It's so bad that no one wants to pay for even our so called better dross.

Glad he is gone, one of the highlights of this transfer window.
Anderson and Cleverley need to go in the next 2 weeks and we will have shifted the serious deadwood. Get those 2 out and get a good CM in and the window will have been decent.

He scored in Moscow so no hard feelings towards him EVER.. But he had the ability to take this league by storm and take his place among the greatest. Never could arise beside Ronaldo whether it was with him or after he left.

Really stupid deal, how nani is the first to go between the likes of young, Anderson, and Valencia is beyond me. The guy hasn't been decent for some time...fair enough but he still a good player on his day and offers unique qualities. I'm far from a nani fanboi but even I can recognise that he has a role to play in the rebuilding of the team. Now we cant realistically go back to the 4-3-3 without signing a winger. Really surprised clubs let him go on loan to sporting instead of taking a punt on him.

Anderson yes, Cleverley didn't cost f*ck all and is on low wages and is a young squad option if we need to rotate.
