Moyes So Far!

Credit where it's due, mixed things up today and had us passing with accuracy, 90% in fact. You never know he may have finally grown a set of balls, only time will tell but the last two games have been encouraging, not in terms of play ( we've still been average) but in terms of direction.

You're probably right. I actually enjoyed today's game though and I have been a huge anti Moyes fan but....
Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps Fergie really did a mistake... I can tell You that if this team won't improve under him in his 2nd season here he will get a boot and I will be the one who will kick him in the arse but so far he still got time to do things right and acquire right players with character and class.

Everyone has a breaking point.

Much better from us, and that's ignoring a result. I'd hoped that the break would do us good and it has. Better passing, better movement. Much more promising stuff. So it was only Palace - that doesn't matter - we've played worse against worse teams this season.

Moyes in tomorrows papers: "It isn’t always the best teams that get to the final in Europe. Liverpool in 2005 gives us hope."

Lovely team selection today and we actually played good football. Hopefully we don't go back to medieval football against Olympiakos, I know we won't be able to play Mata there but even without him this side should be able to work.

Good team selection today.

Providing no injuries, I personally feel the team that played today, should be the team that starts most of the rest of our league games this season. The only change I'd make is taking out Ferdinand, moving Smalling to centre back, and putting Rafael back to right back.

Moyes in tomorrows papers: "It isn’t always the best teams that get to the final in Europe. Liverpool in 2005 gives us hope."

That'll go down well. :D Still, many LFC fans are forever telling us how they won the CL with a team containing the stellar likes of Traore, Bonnie Langford, WG Grace and a man with one leg etc etc.

Not sure where else to put it so I'll say it in here...

Does anyone else feel that this team is looking for it's "hero" of sorts? That one player in red hot form that just continually drags us through. We've always had it before, be it RvP, Rooney, Ronaldo, Keane, Van Nistelrooy, the list goes on. Hazard is Chelsea's man this season, Suarez for Liverpool and up until his injury Ramsey was for Arsenal.

Now while it is obviously a team game and our team performances have been shocking at times, I do feel like no one player has had any form and carried us like they have in previous seasons. We were hoping RvP would when he came back, hoping Mata would change our fortunes but so far nobody is leading the way.

I think it's understated what effect a single player in top form can have on a team, their confidence raises everyones game and they give their team mates someone to look for constantly and someone for the opposition to worry about.

As a fan I feel that has been the most frustrating thing about this season, that when we are down a goal or chasing a winner you look on the pitch for someone that will step up to the mantle but they all seem to be shying away from it. Leading it on to Moyes, perhaps its his man management? He charged Rooney up for a while but seems incapable of doing it to other players, something Fergie excelled at. Just as he felt one player was going to dip in form, perhaps a bit of fatigue, he'd galvanize the next one and get him into his purple patch. Hernandez being a great example of this. The same Hernandez that looks totally lost under Moyes.

Yeah, Pexy. Strange as it might sound (considering he's such a self-absorbed person), a big-time player like Zlatan might make a Cantona-esque difference for the team.

Cautiously optimistic about the coming week. It's a massive week for us, playing in the UCL. Normally we'd be in the title race juggling our priorities between trophies but this season although we aren't in the running for the top 4, it's important that we win our games in the League. So it's not really like for like wrt Liverpool, but yea it seems like a turning point of sorts. If only we can get Kagawa and Rafael completely integrated into this squad, it's a solid platform for next season. Come on you Reds.

In all truth, our goals through the end of the season are not that ambitious. Dispatch Olympiakos and secure Europa League, which surely shouldn't be that hard to do. But more than that, to improve our play over that nightmare performance against Fulham. The performance against Palace was a respectable first step toward restoring our honor.

I'm resigned to the prospect of Moyes bring here for another season.

Did well today with the tactics. No more 81 crosses into the box with Pulis setting up his team to defend those. Lots of patience from the players playing those short passes to open up Palace.

"Obsession never sleeps." (Me Rafa Benitez)

Looked much improved today, we were set up right, and in spells a little bit of quality shone through. Here's hoping for a Spurs and Liverpool slip today.

Would love to have CQ back as assistant.

apart from world class signings on the pitch, moyes must appoint an experienced top class assistant to help him out. even a great like sir alex was never shy of admitting the need of a reliable assistant, archie knox, brian kidd, steve mcclaren, walter smith, queiroz and or course phelan and Meulensteen during the final few seasons at the club.

moyes will still be the man with the final decisions, but it would be a big help to have someone with brilliant football knowledge beside you helping with the decisions. got to say steve round might be considered as one of the best young coaches in england but we need an upgrade here. phil neville is another one learning and he will thrive it. but for the moment moyes needs a top top assistant. queiroz if available would be a brilliant choice. being the manager of the Iranian natioanal squad, i think he can work with 2 jobs if we offer him a role here. i know he will be a busy man but why not try?

if not then why not go back for meulensteen? sir alex took him back after brondby and now he is available. moyes is so good at making people like rooney feeling good about themselves so why not meulensteen.

A better game with a better football played. It'll be interesting to see if this is a one time thing or a clear intent of change.
Agree. We've seen some nice performance in the cl before and returned back to our normal shit on a stick style of football. Hopefully we persist with the patient short passing style we saw partially yesterday (it's good to mix it up).

Also I think although it's hard to judge the current lot, bolstering the coaching staff with some forward thinking modern coaches might be a good idea for Moyes.

Interesting that the tactics used were SO didn't to that previously employed.

It was strange, at times I thought we were actively trying to avoid the wings and cross it in.
If this is a genuine change of style then one off these things have happened:

  • Moyes listened to criticism of style (why suddenly now?) And actively changed.
  • Moyes never set them up to be down the wings so much and is the players that actively decided to change and go with what moyes really wanted... maybe after getting some confidence back after arsenal.
  • Players forced moyes to change tactics and they all had it out in dubai
  • Moyes forced players to change tactics and they all had it out in dubai
In not sure if any one of them is good. .. or that all of then would be good... Does that make sense?
Is an unusual change of style so quickly.. Although, arguably we saw it against arsenal a bit so maybe it was a reaction to the Fulham game and they've got.a bit more confident.

Tactically, the most promising thing about yesterday was the role mata was given. It was such a free role, something so different to what I've come to expect from a moyes team. He was all over the place and it constantly have us an extra dimension.

The final ball to rvp was lacking, but that will come with time/confidence

Balls, he's grown a set.

Something i noticed yesterday that i hadnt up to the point was the number of players that wanted to get on the ball and/or make themselves available for passes. In previous games the gap between our defence/midfield/forwards was so big that all we could do was cross the ball in, but yesterday i saw players take up positions that made them available for short passes with little triangles.

Nice change from "the only way to find a United player is via a cross!"

We met Crystal Palace and we hardly produced anything worth to mention before the lucky penalty. After one up we still were ineffective and one dimensional, Ronneys goal was class but our play was still average.

I take the points and hope this is a step in the right direction, but God should know we have a long long way to go.

In what way was it a lucky penalty?

We were far from being one dimensional in my opinion.
Palace are an in form team with a very good defensive record under Pullis. What I noticed about yesterday was we didn't panic, we mixed it up, Fellaini was box to box and broke up play nicely, Carrick worked well along side him, our passing was very good as was our team work. Yes it wasn't spectacular but it was something the fans have been crying out for.

Pienaar, Arteta and Osman often played with free roles during Moyes time with Everton.

I suppose you could call it lucky in the sense that it was a stupid, needless penalty to give away given that there wasn't any immediate danger.

Yesterday was tactically a step in the right direction. Performance-wise not very impressive but obviously an improvement. We didn't create many chances, as per usual, and CP still looked dangerous in patches.

Surprised many feel that was a turning point. We dominated posession against a team who lumps the ball forward - hardly surprising.

It was better - but it couldn't get much worse so lets put it into context. If the trend continues over next 3 games, then we can start to talk about turning the corner.

It is being put into context, it was a solid display, high passing accuracy, high tempo, mixed play, I was impressed.
Yes he needs to continue this type of play and he still has it all to prove, I've gave him enough stick over the last month or so he deserves credit when it's due.

I know it's one game, but it's what we've been crying out for all season. All I'm saying is he deserves credit for it, he's took enough stick over the last few months and deserves praise for a good solid team performance against a stubborn Palace side. If he reverts to his old ways I'll be one of the first to critics him for it, until then he's gave me a glimmer of hope that he's going to get us playing mixed style football.
