I've just watched the Chelsea game to get a view on how Mourinho set's that 4-2-3-1 system up that we so covet and I mentioned this earlier in the thread but he has two box to box technical players sitting in his two(Matic,Ramirez). He then favours Willian who is one of the most hard working players I have witnessed, the lads got a huge engine, on the other side is Hazard who despite any preconceptions has an incredible work rate, he then has the luxury of Oscar in the hole who is at times sublime ala Juan Mata. It didn't really work tonight for Mourinho against a wall of West Brom players and in some way I was drawn to thinking he needed more width, West Brom got exposed a couple of times with Hazard and Eto breaking down the left flank but all in all the contained very well.
Bringing me to my actual point and one I have already tried to make, how do we set this system up to work with our pick of CM's ?
Cleverley, Carrick, Fellaini, Giggs ?, Rooney.
Edit: Add jonesy in the list I think he is available.
I have put Rooney in as he's more than capable and has played in there more than enough, so what pairing is mobile enough and also gifted and brave enough to sit reading the game from behind the front 3 and who do we trust to be in position when disaster strikes, Chelsea have Ramirez who is incredibly quick, they also have Mickel who although not as good on the ball as Matic he does cover a lot of ground, they now as we know also have Matic who looks like an utter steal at the price and is quick, strong and good on the ball.
I have this terrible fear that should we set up a similar system we just won't have the pace and mobility and sadly the technical ability to keep the ball and on losing it, win it back quickly. The system relies on pressing and with a midfield pairing of Carrick and say Fellaini/Giggs we can forget that also should we pair up Carrick--Cleverley would anyone trust it ? Who does trust Cleverley in a two ? So we are left with Carrick --- Rooney or even Fellaini --- Rooney but the key here is Rooney's a CF and should he have talked with Moyes about a deeper role then he will need to learn it. Truth is we just don't have the staff to play the system or if we do then it's hugely risky and we have David Moyes calling the shots. We will also have Januzaj, Mata, Kagawa forward of that rear pairing all of which are not renowned defensively, It's basically a huge mess all pointing back to four four fucking two, until such time as we bring in at least one but preferably two very mobile CM's who can hold in front of the back four.
Writing this post has actually given me some sympathy for Moyes position but all this crossing nonsense has to stop regardless of formation, you can still play football with feet whilst set up in any formation and while springing crosses in against a back 10 might be your best course of action, if it isn't working after a half of football then it's time to surprise your opponent with an attack on the floor.
