Moyes So Far!

Good comments. Hopefully they'll spur a few people on. He's looked really happy since Mata arrived. Like a terrifying Scottish cheshire cat on a shit load of MDMA. Lets hope that transfers into the actual games.

I hope he'll show some passion on the touchline too. There was a huge difference between his reaction and Poyet's before extra time in the Sunderland game.

He said from the start that there'd be as many lows as highs while he gave the squad a chance to prove themselves. Turns out he's no-one's fool (surprise, surprise)...as some players are soon to find out.

Nice to hear. Its almost like he's taken a stock of the squad this past week and has been given the green light to be ruthless about the squad rebuild.

Brillaint word to describe it, and feck yeah we need a ruthless manager. Sentiment is lovely and all that, but if Moyes deals in sentiment right now he'll be sacked by Christmas. Ferguson wasn't long in assessing the squad when he started and some big names and a lot of crap were the casualties. This isn't having a pop at all of our players because with what they've done for us they deserve lifelong gratitude, but dragging on like this for any longer will on besmirch fantastic legacies and reputations.

Do you really want Moyes clowning about like that goon Poyet on the touchline every game?

I have no problem with a manager being reserved. Different strokes for different folks.

Credit where it's due. Stealing Mata was a great move. He's had a terrible Summer, a pretty bad first half of the season, but now he's done a couple of good things (bringing Mata and keeping Rooney), making it a total of 3 good things for the season (Januzaj being the third).

He also seems to have the right attitude now (reading his latest comments).. All he needs to do now is get us to that 4th spot.

....

Change the style of play, get us scoring more, stop us conceding, buy loads of players.

Easy.

Good to hear what he had to say. He's right about most of it. Hopefully he clears off the deadwood and gets real quality in. Even before that, hopefully he makes some changes into how we play, surely can happen now that we have Mata.
Some players dictate your playing style once you start them. You can't instruct Valencia to cut inside and play short intricate passing and you can't instruct the team to play pressing football when Carrick, Evra, Rio and Vidic start or else you will end up with an exhausted team at half time. The players he has at his disposal really limit him in terms of what tactics to use.

Yes, not denying that. Which is why I said hopefully with Mata now, Valencia stays away from the 1st 11 and we get to a see a more fluid style implemented.

I want to see him show passion and motivate the way Fergie did. Do you think he clowned around?

There's a world of difference between Fergie and Poyet. Anyway, a manager getting excited on the sidelines is no indication of ability or passion. Some great managers keep it all in and very rarely show emotion on the touchline. They are too busy analysing the game.

I have no problem with managers being reserved either. But they can get away with it more if results/performances are half way decent. When things are going wrong, the players (and the supporters) need to see leadership, and it's only too easy to interpret reserve as having no idea what to do next. That's how David looked the other night so hopefully the Mata signing will give both him and the team a confidence boost.

Fair enough Livvie. It's not something that would bother me in particular as much as perhaps the expression on the face.

Poyet looked a bit like Goebbels in that match the other night...

Goebbels

All this talk about his demeanor and "passion" is armchair psychology, if we're being honest with ourselves. Him baying from the sidelines, going all Di Canio for a goal may inspire some "false bravado", but that fades quickly. Ultimately, if the team isn't good enough, it's not good enough. Of course Moyes needs to turn things around, but I don't see how his behavior in public is harming things. Maybe the fans would benefit, but we're a bunch of fickle, irrational bastards anyway, once results improve we'll forget about his dour demeanor.

Steve, there's not a day goes by you don't make me laugh several times. You really should be writing bad puns for Have I got News for You.

(If that's too much of a personal insult I'll retract)

I actually think that is part of the reason Fergie chewed so much gum. When things were going wrong...he chewed faster but left his eyes a stealy glare....not a lot of facial expression....but the anxiety, annoyance and frustration were all seen in the speeding up of his chewing....clever bugger really...

That's the trouble, mate - all my humour is silly & childish. :D

Does this mean Kagawa is a goner :nervous:

Who knows Fishy. He's one of those who despite plenty of game time hasn't really shone but one who you know has it in him so maybe he'll get another chance. I'd love to see him link up with Mata and the rest of the top four for an extended run to see if he can do it here in a team of similarly minded players.

I think Kagawa's shown enough in glimpses that Moyes won't just get rid of him, maybe if there's the (unlikely) possibility of him being used in a swap deal for a major target, but otherwise I think he'll get another season at least.

I think the number 18 will be free for a new midfielder come summer though.

I agree Irwin, and I hope it works out for the lad.

I kind of think that with Mata arriving, Kagawa will thrive...not sure why...just a hunch...it might make him
feel like he can now share the pressure creatively...

I get the same feeling, but maybe that's why it may not happen, ever.

Problem will be now trying to get into that top 3/4 players for Moyes in the next 5 months on a regular basis. Mata, Rooney and RvP are certs to start when fit. Adnan is too to an extent so that leaves Kagawa living off scraps. Dunno how Moyes can fit him in tbh.

You can't play the same players every week that's why a team has a squad.

He'll get games but as I said it'll be living of scraps an baring an injury I can't see him getting a decent run to establish himself.
When given chances he didn't really take them. Look at Januzaj, trusted against Sunderland, scored 2 goals and has been really good for the team ever since. Kagawa sometimes lets a game get past him and fades in and out only to have a couple of good moments during the full 90 minutes which isn't enough. We can keep saying that he's not being played in his favorite position but the ability to adapt to the needs of your team is what makes a good player. What has Kagawa done enough to suggest he should start ahead of Mata, Januzaj or Rooney?

Absolutely nothing. That's what I mean, he's behind them and maybe even Welbeck for that line behind RvP so he's going to struggle to get time. I think I would love Moyes to consider what we discussed in the Kagawa in CM thread.

Great bullishness from Moyes. I was hoping for that "Scottishness" to surface

He's been way to nice and timid since he's started, giving everyone a chance (fair enough).

Let's hope he turns it around on the pitch.

I think so too, hopefully because in order to get the best from him and Mata we will have to move away from crosses and a rigid 442. If we ask Mata to play right midfield, receive the ball from midfield and cross into the box then he will struggle imo.
