Moyes So Far!

Manchester United boss David Moyes insists he will not be buying players in January just for short term gain.

With United's Premier League defence in tatters and a growing injury list, Moyes is under increasing pressure to make a move in the current transfer window.

"I fully understand that supporters are keen to see us freshen up the squad with new faces, but January is a difficult month in which to bring people in," Moyes told United Review.

"While we are actively scouting players all the time, a lot of the work we are doing now is preparation for the summer.

"If we can do any business now, then we will certainly try to do it, but I will not compromise the standards required for a player that can come into this club and help improve it."

Moyes has been linked with a host of players already this month with reports on United making a move for Chelsea's Juan Mata growing louder on Wednesday.

With United already out of the FA Cup and their title race all but over, the season arguably rests on their efforts in Wednesday night's semi-final second leg against Sunderland in the Capital One Cup (they trail 2-1 after the first leg).

Regardless of their spluttering chase for silverware this season, Moyes remains upbeat and is adamant that results this season should not detract from their long term ambitions.

The Scot, who has seen his team lose four out of five games in 2014, added: "We all know that our club is undergoing changes at present.

"But I have a clear path in my mind and I know where we are going."

If we do sign Mata, I'll be feeling way more optimistic about Moyes' chances of succeeding here.

The short term gain is obvious. Even though he doesn't play in one of the critical postions we need to strengthen there's still more chance of him carrying us to fourth than, say, Cabaye.

It also increases confidence among the rest of the squad and the fans. Quite similar to the Ozil deal really: similar fee, similar quality player, similar sense of momentum generated.

Most importantly though, it'd make me much more confident that we're going to do further big business in the summer. The doubts over our willingness to spend big money to improve will be dispelled if we spend around 40m on a non essential signing.

If it happens (still a big if) it might prove to be a turning point in the way Moyes is perceived. Even ignoring any on pitch contribution, that change in perception may prove vital.

Just found this :p

I thought he set he team up wrong tonight. 442 was never going to work against a 3 man, physical midfield. We don't have the quality to do that presently.
We have rode our luck if we win this game tonight. Poor from United.

Was going to post something similar. The team selection was great, but the way we have set up has baffled me.

442 needs knocking on the head. We haven't had a kick since the second half.

Signing Mata is all well and good but the club would probably do better to take a more important decision and start lining up a replacement for the joker currently being employed as manager.

He's completely out of his depth and it is blindingly obvious. A blindfolded stuck in the basement Stevie Wonder could see it.

Not sure how Moyes and the players recover from this.

Looking very bleak for Manchester united.

We spent the entirety of extra time dropping deeper and deeper and deeper until we were practically standing on the goal-line. And it's not the first time that's happened this year - we've conceded plenty of last minute equalisers because of exactly that. We slip further and further back until we do nothing but invite pressure onto us, hoofing the ball away desperately until eventually the other team inevitably score. Moyes simply doesn't have the mentality to manage at this level - when the going gets tough he shits himself and goes defensive. How many more competitions do we have to drop out of in humiliating fashion before he gets the fecking boot?

Tonight showed we have a bunch of bottlers playing for us. League cup semi-final not a champions league semi-final.

Another abysmal performance. His tactic are absolutely terrible.

I dont think you can blame Moyes for that for one minute... Its a cup semi, at home, against a shite team FFS if the players can't get themselves up for that then they're at the wrong club.

6am training tomorrow lads... don't bother bringing your tracksuits, we'll be training in shorts and nothing else til it gets fecking dark and then we might go a bit more.

I don't give a shit about the CC really, I'm not one for emotional knee jerks, and I don't say it lightly but a lot of those players should hang their heads in shame after that, more than that they should be hide away in their houses for a few days.. absolutely abysmal. A home semi at OT and more than a few just looked half arsed... ship up or feck off lads.

I cant remember a worse performance from Utd in a semi.

It's what we deserved for playing terrible football all night. Does Moyes know that we aren't required to play 442? I suppose it's better than his 460 from Everton though.

At least we can focus on making a Europa League spot now...

Not having that. They all tried, as per. Our formation was incredibly odd tonight, given what was a good team selection.

Our problems run deeper than bland cliches such as effort and determination.

Horrible football. Bottling. Terrible results. The difference between Moyes' situation and Fergie's back then was that Fergie inherited a poor side. Moyes has had bad luck through injuries to key players, but we've still got enough quality to be playing better than we are. Just incredible turnaround. His team selection and substitutions have been, for the most part, catastrophic. I'd like to think he can, but it doesn't seem he has the nous to turn this around.

I found it odd when Moyes even mentioned winning 1-0 before the game, and then I was astounded to watch the players sit back and play for a 1-0 win. Yes, the De Gea mistake was atrocious, but we got what we deserved, and I found it somewhat inevitable. Rafael and Hernandez were both atrocious tonight, why the feck he took Kagawa off and left Hernandez on is just a total mystery.

Out of all domestic competitions by 23rd of January. Well done Moyes. Well done...

This.

I really don't know how the morale of the team, which had already been shredded, can recover from tonight's result. The season is over.

It's not that we've lost on penalties (even ignoring the fact that Welbeck took the first one!). It's the fact that we've hung on against an absolute shite team since our goal. Awful tactics and the same tactics that have been employed since Moyes has taken charge. It doesn't matter who we sign with him in charge, we will win nothing. Get shut.

Knocked out of the cup, over two legs, by the worst team in the league. Wonderful.

The players blew it. But so did Moyes. It's up to him to galvanize the team. Sunderland looked like the home team. The amount of possession they had was ridiculous.

Worst performance of the season. By a significant distance as well.

These players look like they haven't seen a football in their life. Seriously, what do we do in training?

We couldn't even fashion a chance from open play in the first half. Moyes has us playing 4-4-2 knocking percentage balls and crosses as our means of attack. It is God awful and absolutely his fault that we play like that, it is his method. Poyet had his players raising their game whilst our player are bereft of confidence. Sunderland played the ball around the park much better than us FFS! That pathetic penalty shootout display was emblematic of the eroded confidence in the squad since we have been led by Moyes.

I suppose you think that Poyet had nothing to do with Sunderland's victory and that his players could just be more arsed than ours?

The players have zero confidence and any team can pin us back at our own ground now, it's his job to take them out of this state of mind, he's failing miserably.

Change your tactics and mentality Moyes, or join the fecking dole line.

Can't believe we played 4-4-2 tonight. I'd take Welbeck wide left over the slop we ended serving up
