On that early tricky fixture list...
‘I don’t like going back over it because this club should be used to tough games. But I think when you’re new manager of Manchester United, we had won the league comfortably last season and then you see the fixture list you get at the start of this season.
‘I’ve had a real baptism of fire. I think it will help me in the end, it will probably make me tougher and to be successful here, you have to put up with an awful lot of other elements as well as the things you have to work with daily.’
How have you found your first Champions League experience?
‘I have enjoyed the games. We look at everything, we try to be very thorough in our approach and in everything we do with regard to the opposition and what we should do ourselves.
‘The games have gone well, we have probably played some of our best football in the Champions League and scored the most amount of goals in games in it. We have done something right but I want us to keep improving because the tournament will get tougher and harder. I hope we have kept some goals and big performances for later on.
‘Leverkusen (5-0 win away) was the high point. You actually did feel that result against Leverkusen at home (4-2 win) was a big message. That was the opening game for us and to get off to a good start was important.’
Every defeat here seems to be amplified....
‘Yeah it is. I think when you lose a game here, there must be something else to it rather than just losing. That’s what I’ve found. I thought that the two games against Everton and Newcastle could have quite easily been 1-0 victories to us. They weren’t, we didn’t score, they got the goals.
‘We can play better but we just didn’t get breaks that might have got us the wins. I would never expect here to be asking for luck but maybe at those times, we needed a little bit and just didn’t get it.’
Planning to make January signings?
‘I think we would like to do so. I would hate to get everyone’s expectations high thinking that we are going to be bringing in lots of players. The one thing I will say is that the club financially will support me in whatever we want to do or try to do. Getting the players in this window is the hardest part.
‘At a club like United, we want to sign the best, elite players. A lot of them might be at other clubs right now and might not be gettable. If we can, we will try and do something. That’s going to take some time. I can’t do that right away.
‘I think if I’d had done that straight away, folk will have said, ‘Why would you change round all the stuff Sir Alex Ferguson has done?’ It’s a gradual change. Obviously, players will come and go, that’s football.
‘That will take a little bit of time. I hope it doesn’t take much time. I think most people understand that it will take a little bit of time to settle in. You have a squad at Manchester United. I’m getting to know the players.’
What do you know about the club now that you didn’t know before?
‘The enormity I knew about but just what this club means. Everywhere you go, there are Manchester United supporters all over the world. Thousands and thousands of people watching, which I probably knew anyway but until I witnessed it in Australia, Japan and Thailand, it made me realise that, my goodness, it’s not just a football club, this is much more than that.
‘My job is to make sure that this football club keeps winning by getting winning teams on the pitch on a Saturday.’
You don’t really like the limelight too much?
‘I understand it will get more and bigger. But I hope that will be because we are successful and winning. I’ve said this before but until I’ve won a few things, I’ve got nothing yet to come out and shout about but my plans are that I will be coming out and shouting about things in the future.
‘Until I’m settled in, got my feet under the table and won a few trophies, I’d like to keep it quiet and to do as little as I can.’
Are you looking forward to the challenge?
‘This club - it’s difficult to explain exactly what I think about it and how big it is - but the challenge is something I’m looking forward to and turning things around. The big thing is to get an exciting young team out on the pitch that everyone at Manchester United can be proud of.’
