Moyes So Far!

Fantastic performance in the first half - decent in the 2nd. Credit to Moyes for his team selection and getting the players focused. Almost seemed it was Fergie managing tonight.

I think that when he was at Everton, he focused much on the wingback / winger partnership. Today, I'd say that the cooperation between Rafael and Valencia looked as fantastic as it could look. No idea whether it's 100% credit to Moyes but I'd say that it's definitely being looked at during training sessions. Cleverley, Valencia and Danny were pressing all game long as well so imo it's something that we're spending time on during training as well.

The big thing to me was the increased numbers of forward balls played on the deck to the strikers and limiting of the long lofted balls to switches of play.

Moyes hails job well done
David Moyes declared himself satisfied with United’s 3-0 win away to Aston Villa, but has called on his side to improve in the coming weeks.

The Reds came away from Villa Park with three points courtesy of Danny Welbeck’s pair of first-half goals within three minutes and Tom Cleverley’s strike early in the second half, but the manager felt his side could have secured an even more emphatic result.

“It was a good job done,” Moyes told MUTV and Sky Sports. “The players played well. The only thing I'd be critical of is that we didn't score more goals. For the first five or six minutes we didn’t quite come out on the front foot, but after that we took control and played well.

“I think we'll play much better than that. I've told the players that that is the least we can do, we've got to keep going and keep winning more games.”

The win saw United claim victory for the first time in four Barclays Premier League outings, but the manager pinpointed the way his side took their chances as the major difference with recent results.

“I don't think there was an awful lot of difference except obviously we scored the goals,” said Moyes. “The fact we've not been scoring goals changes the way the games have looked, mainly for the media it changes how it looks. But we know we have to play better as well, and we have to play better than we did today again. It continually has to improve and it will improve, and I'll make sure it gets better in the coming month.”

Nice words Dave

Valencia cutting infield regularly was really good to see. Seemed like a well thought out plan.

Same here. I saw something in our style and approach that suggests we have turned the corner, despite not having Carrick and RvP.

We will have bad days again but hopefully less frequent than of late. It was a poor Villa side and we might not at this stage be able to replicate that against the stronger sides but at least the players got to build some confidence. If we keep up with the passing game then we will keep improving. I dont think the corner is turned yet but we do look like we are changing our approach for the positive.

At the end of the day you can only beat the team in front of you. We haven't done that in the recent matches but today we did, and there were many positives to take from the game too. I agree with moyes that recent results haven't quite been coherent with our performances and hopefully from today we can build on this.

By "Well thought out plan" do you mean a "blindingly obvious and simple move that every man, woman, child and their dog have been screaming for him to do for the last 3 years?"

A good win, European cup draw tomorrow, and then Stoke away in the capital cup on Wednesday and a chance to progress to the semis....

Things look a lot better than they have done.

Yip. The biggest ballache we have now is the gap between us and Everton in 5th. Spurs and Newcastle are only 2 points ahead of us so with a decent run we can leapfrog those and get ourselves up to 6th. The 5 above us then are all very close together and will be harder and take longer to break into. We need to avoid any slip ups now though in the League as a priority and get ourselves poised behind that group of 5 waiting to pounce on any dropped points. We will not break into the top 4/5 until January. No chance in my eyes that we will gain 7 on Everton looking at their fixtures.

I really hope the general improvement we saw in terms of pressing and movement in this match, will be features we'll regularly witness from now on. The match was not enjoyable because of the scoreline only, also because the team played coherently.

Yr so right. The enjoyment level was as high as it has been all season.Villa are not great but they have beaten City and Arsenal, and we're supposed to be utter shit if you belive the media and other s clubs supporters. This performance is what we wanted and needed. What we'd give for nine points to round off the year and a good january in the transfer market!.Three home games in January and in the league and a chance to Peg both Spurs and Chelsea back!

Much better today. Hopefully we keep it up against Stoke. I don't think I could stand the sight of Sparky winning.

Most enjoyable game I've had watching United this season. That old enjoyment is back, and United look like it's old self. Did Phelan back in training, or what? :D

Now, do we still need to weed out half of the team because they aren't good enough?

I still think Bebe, Macheda, Ando, Young, and perhaps Fabio(for his own sake) should go, also Evra needs to prove he still got it, Rio sadly looks done to me, Fellaini needs to prove his worth, I also hate to say it because I love him and I would still love if he stayed another year or maybe two at the club, but at 40 I think Giggs might sadly retire at the end of the season, Chicha is another one I'd love to stay, but considering the amount of games he is playing I think he might want to go.

Hope he persists with Rooney playing the way he did today. Makes such a difference to have someone that can pass the way he did plus have confidence to take the ball and try go past players.

The interviewer asked welbeck about someone making comments that not every game winnable these days for Manchester United.

It wasn't Moyes who said that, right?

Stop being such a bundle of fecking grumble!

I am still as desperate to see United (therefore Moyes) win as the next United fan, but doesn't mean I have to show blind faith towards the manager.

No one is asking you to. But why not just take yesterday's performance and result for what it is - a good day at the office for United. As we've seen this season, you have to earn points in the league - the likes of Albion, Southampton, Cardiff, Everton and Newcastle have shown us that teams through the league are capable of punishing you. Heck, Villa have beaten both Arsenal and City this season, scoring six in the process. In this context, why shouldn't we be happy that we got a routine away win?

It strikes me that whenever United put a team to the sword, it's a case of the opposition being weak, but when City roll teams over, they're the GOAT.

Exactly! Villa weren't all that, but the likes of Albion, Cardiff and Newcastle weren't great shakes either. As long as we continue to play like we did yesterday and beat the teams we are expected to beat, we'll have a great chance of finishing top four, which is what our aim should be now as far as the league is concerned.

Until I see some lasting improvement, not like the short spell leading up to the Arsenal game, I'll remain on the fence. He's shown too little for me so far, and the fact that we've lost more points that we did last season after 16 games is truly shocking.

I wouldn't say that the Villa result doesn't matter, because it clearly does, but the team has too much quality to play shit all the time - and the result isn't necessarily down to suddenly improved management from Moyes. It might be, but not necessarily. An extended streak of wins will go a long way to put things right and increase the fans faith in him, but I won't get carried away with a good result at Villa. It could be a one-off for all we know.

I'm happy with the win, just not overly excited with what would have been a routine win under Sir Alex.

Sir Alex would have seen us pick up many more points against those lot you listed.

Not getting carried away by yesterday, if we win our next 2-3 then I will be convinced. Yesterday was of the standard expected by a Manchester United side, and some of those players were overdue some good performances. It is a question of maintaining that standard now otherwise it just becomes a lost exercise like the win over Arsenal.

Forget who the opposition were yesterday - and to a certain extent the performance. It was about getting 3 points by hook or by crook. The team managed that and thats what counts right now.

They happened to play some good stuff which was pleasing. As for the next game, its about the result. The team need confidence to start expressing themselves and the only way they will get that is with victories under their belts.

Id love to see us playing the way City are right now....but id love 3 points so much more. Thats the name of the game for Moyes between now and end of January.

I liked the performance yesterday because it seemed to suggest that Moyes has identified our weakness (poor CB's on the ball and a porous CM) and tried to tweak our game to combat it until he can sign replacements in midfield.

Dropping Rooney deeper, pairing him with the quick feet of Cleverley/Giggs and having Jones/Evans as our CB pairing resulted in a much more cohesive team performance.
It wasn't about the result, but the manner in which we won. As I've said numerous times, as long as he at least tries to put his mark on the team and having us play some nice football, I'll be far more content even with a temporary dip in results post SAF.

Because those two sides are sitting at second and third place in the league while we are not.

7 and 8 point differences at this stage do not justify some of the attitude on here. if you think it does, thats your business, im entitled to give my thoughtss

Same here. I really really dont care about winning anything this year. A top 4 finish but a change in approach and him imposing his style to make us play better football is what I want.

Everton's Sylvain Distin:

Distin told French newspaper L'Equipe: "Now we have a game focused on ball possession. We rarely play long passes. Whoever the opponent is, we try to impose our game.

"Moyes and Roberto Martinez are different, but even if it goes smoothly now, there is a big part of Moyes in that success; state of mind, desire, determination and fighting spirit. We never give up. That mental strength, he instilled it in us a long time ago.

"We are just starting to dream about the Champions League. But the way is still very long.
"I have thought for Moyes. I am at Everton thanks to him. He has enough experience to bounce back. It is Manchester United, a big engine. I am not worried."

To be fair to the CBs, I believe Smalling is good on the ball for a centreback, just he isn't for a fullback and a lot of people think he has regressed when really he hasn't got the skillset naturally to be a fullback.

I was talking about Rio/Vidic but aye, Smalling's not a very good passer.

Rio isn't bad at all, he's been off form as a result of his age.

He's been horrendous this season.

I fear he's lost it completely.

The poor defending isn't the worst part, it's the dallying on the ball. That's got nothing to do with age.

Form is temporary class is permanent.
