Moyes So Far!

Good to see that the pressure has been off him now. Maybe now he can finally get to molding the team the way he wants it. Its encouraging to see us improving (especially defensively) each week.

He's done very little wrong over the past few weeks, very pleased to see him turn things around.

Got his tactics spot on IMO. Arsenal are much more dangerous on the counter and by ceding possession we nullified that threat.

However he should be a little disappointed with our 2nd half display. While ceding possession may have been a tactic we were far too wasteful with the ball in the 2nd half.

To be fair these 2nd half performances are nothing new. Most teams do this and we did have chances to score and put the game to bed (Rooney left foot shot and Smalling header).

Moyes In!!

Slowly but surely his hard work is paying off. The team selections and tactics are starting to look much better now. You can just sense that everyone is feeling more comfortable in their roles. He'll go far if the players and fans stay right behind him.

Looks like a fast learner from his mistakes but still needs to settle a bit more to this United system.

Surprisingly effective reading of Arsenal's game today and strong motivation as we were pressing on Arsenal almost full 90 minutes without longer breaks.

What David needs is not only a full support from United army but also it would be nice to see owners, board of directors and of course Woody guy encouraging him to make some huge deals.

With that kind of actions I'm sure he'll be capable of building even stronger side, close to Bayern's powerful squad's depth.

His substitutions still frustrate me. It worked today, but it's still defensive first. It was a great result, but it was like watching Everton eek out a win against a top 4 side last year. As a springboard going forward I'm very happy, as a template I won't be.
Pretty much this.

We're Manchester United, we shouldn't be hanging on for dear life at home against Arsenal, and throwing on a big, tall target to pump the ball up to near the end.

Great result, good first half performance, but the second half had echoes of the Southampton game about it and it's worrying to see us defend for our lives at home, like a lesser team holding out against the top sides. I hope this is still just due to the settling in period and not a vision of the future.

Thought the subs were spot on today. I was concerned as to who Fellaini would come on for but it turned out to be a stroke of genius!

We needed the win desperately so it wasn't pretty to watch at the end. He's trying to buy himself a bit of leeway and build the points total up before trying anything too attacking.

We've been getting gradually better and better over the last few weeks. Signs are there that we're really starting to click now under him. Still a hell of a lot of work and improving to do, but fair play, he's getting to grips with being the Utd manager. Things are starting to look brighter.

Pleased for him.

Tactics felt like it came straight out of the Fergie textbox. That was what we would always do when we played them in their heyday during the early 00s. When we couldn't outplay them, we'd put hardmen across the field and challenge them to a game a physicality. They usually retreat back to their shells.

Yeah personally would have liked us to go for the second which I think we could have got. A great result either way but would like us to try and kill the game off and it wasn't like Arsenal were so threatening that we needed to go really defensive. I mean there's inevitably going to be a period where you are holding on, but think we could have retained a bigger threat towards the end.

Agreed. Thought Januzaj would have been better to bring on rather than Giggs, but delighted that we won the game.

Why is it surprising? He's an excellent manager and has always been good tactically.
He is indeed but this season Arsenal is simply remarkable and quite hard to destroy but still when I look on the players we have like De Gea, RVP, Rooney, Valencia, Jones, Vidic it's really hard to surprised at all.

As if we have been playing swashbuckling football for years under Fergie. Even back during the 07/08 season we the same as today, hanging on for our dear lives at home to Arsenal, defending a slender 2-1 lead.

In fairness, we should have been 2-0 up today bar the miss from Smalling, and to a lesser extent Rooney earlier on. All in all it was a good line-up and a good performance. Well in, Moysie.

I think you've underestimated or have not seen what Arsenal have been capable of so far. They have been in excellent shape and win, win ugly if you have to, but today was a must win and a certain must not lose. I understand the gripes at surrendering the lead to the likes of Southampton but this was a massive result and we really couldn't afford an 11 point gap even if it is still early. He got it spot on and frustrating as it may seem from an entertainment point of view it had a touch of Jupp Heynckes Bayern about it, we played them to death without the ball and this squad has been trying that for a couple of years now.

I don't think we were hanging on to our dear lives. We often cede possesion to arsenal, and they will more often than not fail to take advantage against a proper team.

Big win for him.

More importantly we have navigated the three games in the last 8 days very well and are looking in a much better position in the league. Now ahead of City and Spurs, up to 5th in the league and only one point behind Chelsea and in a good position in the CL.

Last few weeks individual and team performances have been getting better and I think we are nine undefeated in all competitions now.

We still need to keep this run of wins up in the league and the improvement has to continue but October has been a good month for him.

That doesn't mean it's what we should hope for, does it?

I'm not even being particularly critical, I'm just saying I hope it's not a sign of things to come as I'd rather we played more positively in big games.

I'd be saying the same if we'd played like that near the end under Fergie.

To quibble about defensive subs and set-up is a nonsense today. The result was everything and it was very effectively achieved. Spirit and conviction from all concerned. We looked purposeful and united. A brief trawl through the pre-match comments will show the level of pessimism not to say out and out defeatism that was prevalent amongst a large percentage of contributers. Moyes is having to dig in at the moment. He's undeniably making progress and deserves serious credit for that result today.

We did well to soak up the pressure but were pretty useless on the break. On another day Rooney/Smalling would have put away their chances and the last 15 minutes would have been comfortable. Fine margins and all that...

To be honest I was actually surprised Arsenal didn't score in the last 10-15 minutes, they probably should have done. This isn't a negative reaction but I thought Arsenal were really poor today, particularly in light of the performance they gave against Dortmund. I was surprised how off the pace they were in the first half. The second half they were better but United played far too defensively, like an underdog side at times. They were completely there for the taking and it worries me that we didn't go for the jugular in the second half.

Moyes is a very reactive manager, and sometimes I feel it manifests itself in negativity. It is something that often hampered his progress at Everton.

We were a bit defensive in the second but you can understand that given the importance of the game. Hopefully it's not the Moyes way of course.

I think we need to navigate games any way that gets results for now, I too would hope we play fantastic attacking football but look at the last 8 years for Arsenal, for me the results take presidency over the visual aspect. We still looked full of flair and invention today and also looked hungry and passionate, those things are as pleasing to the eye as beautiful triangles are at times.

My sentiments exactly but we were like this last season so I don't think it is something we can pin on Moyes but the players themselves. That being said I thought we were managing fine before the subs. The subs did change the dynamics of the game today and frankly there were a couple close shots by Arsenal.

Got to remember he was at Everton for 10 years, you don't just shake that out of you.....the differing mentality, the way you approach situations.

Just feel it could have easily been another Southampton scenario and probably should have been. I worry he will use this win as a default for other games rather than pressing home an advantage when you have the momentum.

I'm all about result taking precedence over performance, I've said it countless times in my time here. My point is simply, we played the second half today the same way we did against Southampton, like a lesser team holding out against a bigger side for a surprise win. It cost us against Southampton, but happily we held out today.

Yes, result comes first and it's a great result, one that Moyes really needed. I just hope this is part of his settling in and not a nod to what we should expect to see on a regular basis. We're better than to hope for hanging on at home, we're Manchester United don't forget.
