Moutinho

Very arguable. We all know how much Fergie loves his traditional wingers. I think as long as Antonio can stay fit, he will be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Eh? Fergie loves his traditonary wingers so much he played Beckham on the right hand side for around 10 years, has played Park wide on the left countless times and allowed Ronaldo to float inside and force Rooney wide.

Anyway you look at it Valencia is not even close to being considered our best player

So a guy that we could have got 12 months ago for £10 million, we're now gonna spend £20 million + on?

Fantastic.

How do we know he was ready to move and how do we know our interest was genuine 20+ months ago? Also, this apparent bid has surfaced after a Euro Tournament - bound to inflate transfer fees.

He's right though, SAF is stupid! We could have signed Messi on a free eight years ago and now he must be worth at least £1zillion! I just don't understand why Sir Alex constantly fails to operate his crystal ball correctly?!

Did we need Moutinho 2 years ago? Scholes and Carrick in their primes, Giggs still effective in his new central position, Fletcher's innards still working, Anderson still young and with untapped potential. It wasn't as obviously a problem position as it is now.

Sometimes you under pay, sometimes you over pay. It don't matter if he proves to be a good player for the club. I've not seen much of him, who knows how serious we are about him - but he's at a good age and playing for a national team that pass the ball well. He's not the biggest and it will be interesting to see how we reshape the team.

I predict us going 4-3-3 against better teams and our classic 4-4-2 against the sides that we can afford to go toe to toe with. If we signed Moutinho you would have him, Scholes and Carrick who can play the two holding midfielders to a tee a 4-3-3 formation, I also think that Moutinho would be suited to a two midfield as he is mobile and good at both the defending and attacking aspects of playing in midfield.

Up top you have Rooney, Kagawa, Welbeck and Nani who are especially suited to playing in a fluid attacking front three. Young, Valencia, and Hernandez are more linear types of players that would be more comfortable in a 4-4-2 formation.

Of course all players are interchangable between the formations with Valencia inparticular able to be effective in a more rigid front three.

I agree with that JHC,but i would also put Young in the wide forward bracket, he is probably more effective playing a bit further in from the touchline. There is no doubt he can score goals too. Agree with everything else though.

I don't know if he's THE player, but he's the style we should be looking for. Can't help but wonder why, although he's been around for quite some time, he's still playing in Portugal, but it shouldn't be held against him.

I don't care about the money. If we want to get the midfield right, we have to spend. We had a period in which we could have maybe done it on the cheap, or cheaper. But we didn't get any great finds, the midfielder signings of 2007 who could have been so big for us right now, Hargreaves and Anderson, are not. And by now Scholes retired and came back. The time has passed, we need solutions now.

Might want to hurry up a bit if Spurs are about to get the Modric cash from Madrid.

The same Beckham who hugged the touchline?

Rooney, Vida..Valencia is in the mix behind those two.
Only a muppet would think otherwise

They just won't leave Anderson alone, he's not been a flop, for the last time.

''The Porto playmaker is regarded as one of the finest in Europe, and only enhanced his reputation this summer with a series of superb displays for Portugal at Euro 2012.

Sir Alex Ferguson has made no secret of his desire to bring in another creative central midfielder, but has been priced out of a number of potential targets, including PSV star Kevin Strootman and Borussia Dortmund's Mario Gotze.

However, United believe Moutinho is an attainable target, and have reportedly opened talks with Porto earlier this week over a £20 million deal.

Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton are other well known admirers of Moutinho, but are yet to show their hand and are unlikely to get involved in a bidding war with United.

Any deal ultimately hinges on Porto's desire to sell, having previously stated they wouldn't, but the cash would be useful to fund their own transfer plans.

United believe they must move for Moutinho now, as Porto would be unwilling to lose both him and star forward Hulk, who is in advanced talks with Chelsea.

Moutinho's potential arrival at Old Trafford would almost certainly signal the end for flop Anderson, who has been linked to Benfica, while teenager Larnell Cole will be handed a new contract and promoted to the first-team squad.''

Why do I have this awful feeling we're interested in him because of the Euros? Nothing good comes out of such impulse deals.

Hargreaves?

Plus i'm sure we've been well aware of him for some time. Whats wrong with analysing him after a good tournament though?

Why do I have this awful feeling we're interested in him because of the Euros?

Well, it can't be based on the fact we've been linked with him a bit recently because that's been happening since 2006...including this rather bizarre 'story':
Alex Ferguson's Manchester United assistant, Carlos Queiroz, has pointed out that Sporting Lisbon's Miguel Veloso, as well as Porto's Quaresma, is just one of many players on the Old Trafford shortlist...

Queiroz: We Want Quaresma And Veloso, But...

Miguel Veloso, seen here sparring with Luis Figo, is said to be a Manchester United target.

Red Devils Assistant manager Carlos Queiroz all but confirmed this to Setanta Sports today, but also dismissed it in the same breath.

The former Real Madrid boss pointed out that Alex Ferguson, the Old Trafford coach, had his eye on more than one Portuguese ace. In fact, it was more than a couple.

"Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho, Quaresma, Bruno Alves and Bosingwa have all been looked at already," blared the 54 year old.

"Do we like them all of them? Yes, of course. However, we cannot work with 200 players!"

So, while Queiroz was quick to quash one piece of transfer speculation, he may have added four others to the mix.

Joao Moutinho acts as Veloso's teammate at Sporting, while the remaining three play for Porto.

There is little surprise about United's interest in any of these players, not least Quaresma, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to a more presitgious league.

Came across this just there. Who the hell was Fabio Paim and why did everyone seem to think he was the second coming?!

Well, there wasn't any noise around him prior the Euros, Porto didn't pay too much for him couple of years ago..you'd think he's not all that.
Suddenly after a couple of good games he's great again. Smells like knee-jerking to me.

-----------Mountinho---Carrick/Clevs----------
Valencia------------Kagawa------------Nani
-------------------Rooney----------------------

Some sexy football there, not to mention the likes of Young, Scholes, Welbeck, Hernandez rotating in with others, If Mountinho & Baines came in I'd be very happy with our transfewr business.

As Brnwed mentioned before we were interested for him some times ago. Also, is not that Moutinho wasn't good before the EURO. He played also in EURO 2008 as a starter when he was 21 years old so he always was good. We didn't bought him 2 years ago, maybe because we had still hopes in Hargreaves and Fletcher(?), Giggs and Scholes were younger and Ferguson looks like he doesn't like midfielders.

Yes please. Perfect signing, exactly what we need. Sell Anderson as well and we are laughing.

Yeah I remembered those comments, mentioned that Moutinho was mentioned by CQ

Fabio Paim was a football manager star. Because he became a dribbling machine in that game, people were saying he's gong to be brilliant ;)

Nice player. Similar to Modric and with a bit of aggression as well; he should be suited to the EPL.

Good post. You have to wonder why he's been in the shop window so long if he's a top player. It's not as if nobody knew about him.

But we've let our midfield wither on the vine too long. And we don't have the luxury of waiting for the very best any longer. If he can improve us, I hope we get him.
