Moutinho

Aye I'd prefer;

--------------De Gea-----------
Rafael---Smalling---Vidic---Evra
Nani---Carrick---Moutinho---Kagawa
--------------Rooney
----------------Welbeck

Subs: Lindegaard, Jones, Ferdinand, Scholes, Cleverley, Young, Hernandez

Thus leaving our arguably best player out of the first eleven and even out of the bench. Nice.

Yeah I did accidentally overlook Valencia on the bench. He aint our best player though, not even the best at the club in his position

I bloody hope Kagawa isn't played as a left midfielder, he's never played there.

I guess it all depends on what role he's asked to play.

If its as a traditional winger then it could be a disaster. But if it's as a wide playmaker who has the licence to drift inside, then it could be interesting.

lets give Valencia number 7 and tell him he doesn't even fit the bench.

Rory Smith from The Times saying the bid is well sourced, and multi sourced. Filed it late last night which is why it's not online yet.

Cock sneaking out slowly...

It'd be a bit embarrassing if we bought him for £25million when Porto picked him up for less than £10million only a year or two ago. Why didn't we get him then?

Looks like the reports about a bid might be legit..
Soo.. which club will pip us to this one then?

You are embarrassed very easily. He wasnt going anywhere with Sporting. Made the step up after joining Porto. (supposedly... I havent been following his career)

Rio, Berbatov, Carrick, Young, Valencia, etc.

It'd be the same with Modric. It's not a new thing, and not embarrassing.

Manchester United make £20m bid for services of Moutinho

Manchester United have tabled a formal offer, believed to be about £20 million, for João Moutinho, the Portugal midfield player.

United contacted Porto, the 25-year-old’s present club, this week to establish their valuation of the playmaker and they returned with an opening offer yesterday. It is thought that Porto are prepared to sell Moutinho, an £8.5 million signing from Sporting Lisbon two years ago, but want as much as £26 million. United will hope the lure of playing at Old Trafford will be enough to encourage the player to agitate for a move and reduce the price.

United, though, are likely to face intense competition from Tottenham Hotspur for the player, who worked with André Villas-Boas, Spurs’ newly appointed manager, at Porto in 2010. Villas-Boas has earmarked Moutinho as his priority recruit should Luka Modric, the Croatia international, leave White Hart Lane.

Moutinho has admitted that he would welcome the chance to work with Villas-Boas again and the Spurs manager will no doubt hope to use that personal relationship to encourage the player to forgo Champions League football for at least one season

[...snipped out the irrelevant Spurs stuff...]

Villas-Boas is also keen to be reunited with João Moutinho, the Portugal playmaker with whom he enjoyed such success at Porto, although Spurs will face competition from Manchester United for his services. The Old Trafford club have inquired about the 25-year-old’s availability, although it is thought that his relationship with Villas-Boas may offset the loss of Champions League football if both sides formalise their interest.

That article starts off talking about a bid from us and then spends three-quarters of its length discussing Tottenham's entire transfer activity, before mentioning at the end that we've also bid for Moutinho as if it had forgotten that's how the article started!

Does anyone know/remember why Queiroz dropped him from the Portugal team? I remember his as one of Scolari's players, but then he disappeared (internationally speaking, I don't see much of the Portuguese league)

 That's journalism for you. No idea why he felt the need to discuss Spurs' goalkeeping situation.

 That is what I was thinking. Without the Spurs stuff the article wouldn't have been that long. Just edited it now to remove the bit about Spurs' transfer activity.

A quick scout round the Portuguese press suggests they've been talking about a United bid for a few days. Maybe the British press didn't take it seriously until they heard that Spurs think they're bidding against us?

:lol::lol:

Well observed.

That's the modern day article for you. Journalist posts the story on twitter and has a mad rush to get the article up then

I think the spurs challenge is relevant, especially because of AVB. He is clearly a fan and good friend of Moutinho, and spurs will still be able to offer a significant pay increase than what hes on at Porto.

I would not be shocked if he did choose 2 go there, but surely if you are ambitious enough you would choose utd over spurs.

Is The Times reliable anymore though?

Oh noes, competition from Spurs

Can't see Spurs being interested in Moutinho unless Modric leaves. So if we want Moutinho and strike quickly - I can't see Spurs making a bid

A. I hope we don't see Kagawa being played out on the wing, he's an AM and hopefully will be played as that.

B. No place for Valencia, our double Player of the Year?

If Madrid sign Modric and its followed by Spurs signing Moutinho, there will be lot of gloom in here!

The problem with Moutinho is that isn't he the same as Rooney and Kagawa in that his best position is in the number 10 position?

I love the way that starts off as a statement and ends as a question. A Questment.

Would be an excellent signing and one that I was calling for whilst he was still as Sporting(would have saved us so much money if we'd gone in then), however lets hope nobody shows him the weather in Manchester today. ;)

Did you play a lot of Football Manager then?

Yeah I did accidentally overlook Valencia on the bench. He aint our best player though, not even the best at the club in his position

Very arguable. We all know how much Fergie loves his traditional wingers. I think as long as Antonio can stay fit, he will be one of the first names on the team sheet.

It'd be a bit embarrassing if we bought him for £25million when Porto picked him up for less than £10million only a year or two ago. Why didn't we get him then?

Would you prefer to spend £10m on a player who has raw potential, but unproven at a top level. Or sign a player for £20m/£25m who has proven him self to play to the same level and beyond as proven world class midfielders?

we lost bale to spurs. it's not that funny.

The fact that AVB is now at Spurs may prove as a huge incentive for Moutinho. Not sure how close they are though.

Is he THAT good?

Well I am not too sure. It certainly seems that there was little interest until he played very well against Spain. That said, after we were twice embarrased against Barca's midfield in the biggest club game of them all, maybe that performance says a lot about what Moutinho will bring to our team.

Completely different circumstances. Bale was 17/18 years old, unproven and felt he would be playing reserve team footie at United for several years before he got even a sniff of the first team.

Moutinho has just come off the back of a Euro's where he was Portugals' best player after Ronaldo, and he commands respect. With that in mind, if given a straight choice between the 2 clubs, it would be a no brainer for him.

Is he THAT good?

Well he's good, he's no Schweinstiger or Yaya or whatever, but he'd fill an important hole in our midfield. We need a midfielder who can compliment Carrick in a 4-5-1 system, and of course, play in the 'two man midfield' that we love doing, and I think he'd be able to do that very effectively.

I think he would improve things massively, but part of that is down to how poor our midfield currently is. He'd be a good signing for the club.
