Moussa Sissoko

Liverpool set to win race to sign Moussa Sissoko | Mail Online

Liverpool are poised to beat Tottenham and Manchester United to the signing of France midfielder Moussa Sissoko.

The Toulouse star, 21, has been on the radar of British clubs for the past four years and turned down Liverpool and Bolton to sign professional terms with his French club as a teenager.

Spurs have emerged as strong suitors over recent seasons and were close to a deal 18 months ago, only to be told he was valued at £18million.

However, the arrival of Damien Comolli and some of Tottenham's former scouting staff has coincided with Liverpool monitoring him again and he looks destined for Anfield in the summer providing a fee can be agreed.

Sissoko is understood to have told friends that Liverpool is his preference, despite turning them down again in the summer.

He revealed this week: 'I had contacts with English clubs, notably Liverpool, but I preferred to commit myself to Toulouse, the club where I have been educated, to get more experience. It is up to me to go on improving, to become a world-class player.'

Sissoko is 6ft 2in, strong, athletic and comfortable anywhere in central midfield.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have signed Bradford's 14-year-old defender Nial Heaton.

Would not be happy if this lad went elsewhere. He is a real talent this kid.

Hope not. He's a really good player of what I've seen of him in Ligue 1.

So why has there been no speculation about this guy? Isn't he regarded as one of the best young midfielders? I think we could do with a player of his style to go along with an attacking midfielder if we buy one.

Simple, he doesn't sell papers.

Statistically (recent) we're more likely to sign players we're not linked with than ones we are.

Ever Banega it is, then.

I've watched Sissoko quite a bit this season and I like him, but he's not for us. He would be in direct competition with Anderson without being a considerable upgrade and that's simply not something we need in our squad.

His form this season has been up and down but the combination of incredible physical gifts combined with excellent technical skills is still very exciting and valuable. I will say that anyone who wants us to sign Rodwell should take a look at Sissoko because they are practically the same player, Sissoko just does everything better than Rodwell does.

M'Vila is a completely different kind of player but I agree with datura that he would be much better for us. Unfortunately he signed a contract extension less than a month ago so that probably rules him out of a move this summer.

Sissoko: Agent expects 'serious' movement

The 21-year-old has previously admitted that he is ready to move on and his club are reported to be prepared to listen to offers in the region of £13million.

Liverpool have long been linked with Sissoko, but there is said to be rivalry from Premier League competitors Newcastle and European heavyweights Inter Milan.

According to the powerful central midfielder's representative, Bacary Sanogo, Lyon are also hopeful of securing a deal in what is developing into at least a four-way battle.

"The link with Lyon is serious, but it is not the only one," Sanogo said in the Liverpool Echo.

"There are also negotiations with Liverpool, Newcastle and Inter. Things should seriously move next week.

"His priority is a club with a major sporting project."

Would be interesting to see where he goes.
and Newcastle seem to be in the market for players you would associate with a level above them

In before United steal him from under Liverpools nose.

Isn't he similar to the other Sissoko who was at Liverpool?

Moussa is more of an attacking midfielder than a defensive one. When I was watching him a lot (around the turn of the year and into Jan/Feb/Mar mostly) he was usually the most advanced midfielder in a midfield three and didn't have many defensive responsibilities. He used his incredible pace and powerful running both with and without the ball in transition and in and around the attacking third, playing quick short passing combinations with his team mates and then looking to attack the penalty box.

I know he has been labelled as a defensive midfielder but whether that's because he's a black, French midfielder and journalists are lazy or because that's how he broke into the team I don't know, I didn't watch him much if at all before this season so I can't comment on his past. But the player he is now, if he were to join United, would need to play with Carrick next to him holding the midfield while he played the more advanced role. And like I mentioned in my earlier post, right now he isn't a significant upgrade over Anderson, in fact I would argue he isn't an upgrade over Anderson at all (both in terms of current ability in a vacuum and in terms of what we need from a midfielder, specifically a distributor/passing engine type, not someone to drift in and out picking his spots), so I don't think he is someone we will/should be interested in.

All my Geordie pals are pretty excited with the calibre of players they've been signing although many begrudge Ashely any credit whatsoever.

Good strategy - sign players to long contracts who'll hopefully develop and sell them on for huge returns if they do.

Sensible really - it happens to all clubs of their stature when the top 4 and/or european giants come sniffing so why fight it - get as much cash as you can.

Might as well re-post kouroux's posts from the first page so people aren't confused what type of midfielder he is:

He was a former DM but he was moved up the pitch so his role is a lot more attacking now. He's a powerful attacking midfielder

He was average at defending that his coach allows him to not focus much of his game on it.He has other qualities and shouldn't waste them on defending, well that's what his coach thinks

I saw him play what was almost a right wing role against Nice (I think) last year and it wasn't a remotely defensive role.

I hate central midfielders whose best asset is their physicality. Disciplined, technical players are the goal. If a central midfielder with a physical presence is a must, then I would much prefer a player like Javi Martínez, who is also very strong technically.

Manchester United enter chase for £7m Sissoko

Manchester United have entered the race to sign Toulouse ace Moussa Sissoko, according to sources in France.
The Premier League champions have joined Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City in a four-way Premier League chase for the French international, who has played three times for his country since making his debut two years ago.
The 21-year-old midfielder wants to test himself at the highest level and is being lined up to a move to the Premier League after eight years at Toulouse.
Sir Alex Ferguson is on the lookout for midfield firepower, with the loss of Paul Scholes [retired], Owen Hargreaves [released] and Darron Gibson, who could be joining Sunderland.
Sissoko nearly joined Spurs two years ago, but the move broke down as both sides failed to agree a fee. Reports suggest that around £7million will be enough to seal a move to Old Trafford.

£7m sounds like a really good price, for someone that's meant to be as highly rated as he is.

a key player for me on FM 11, anchors my 5 man midfield at United, based on that i say: "Fergie sign him up!!"

Kouroux, what's the word on him? A quick Youtube has left me really underwhelmed.

Bit of a bruiser then? I do think we need someone of that ilk in our midfield, someone who can put the proverbial boot in.

But seriously speaking, his reminds me of Liverpool's Sissoko; aggressive, hard in the tackle but couldn't pass to save his life.

the main target appears to be a playmaker, but if we could also get a defensive meidfielder for cheap like sissoko or m'vila im all for it due to the fact we lack bite in the tackle centrally

He's not really a defensive midfielder. He's a bit more like Yaya Toure (since he's been at City) I'd say, a player who joins in with the attack and has a strong presence in the middle.

Yeah! I am so happy we are in for him. He is the lad to take over from Carrick. He is a midfielder though and not a striker.
