Mourinho not happy with transfer window - Exclusive interview with Ogden

If we only get one more player - presumably a defensive midfielder - we're going to fighting to get in the top 4 again. This squad isn't capable of a title challenge, IMHO, There are still gaping holes in the squad and players who, over the past few years, have been conclusively been proven not to be good enough for where we want to get to. If all of that happens, the first Mourinho blow up won't be long coming.

On what grounds

Two players at least and not one less. If Woodward wants one then perhaps he should become the manager.

We still need a star attacker that makes a big difference and aids the main striker.

city have de Bruyne and Silva
Chelsea have Hazard
Arsenal (for now) Ozil and Sanchez
Spurs have Alli
Madrid Bale and Ronaldo
Barca have Neymar & Messi

We lack that. Lukaku needs help and all the above imo are players better than we have in the roles behind the striker. We won't win the league without one
Im not giving up on Miki being that player for us. Or Martial for that matter.

It does seem very much like his only targets are Perisic (no backup option), and Matic/Dier. Nothing else has really looked remotely likely and I think this is where we're having problems. Inter will have noticed that we have no backup for Perisic, which means they can play hardball, and the other two are from other PL clubs who are also looking to finish in the top 4 this coming season. We won't get either of them. If there was anyone else on the horizon, you'd expect that we'd not have suddenly stopped being transfer-news worthy after Inter went on tour.

I'd like to think we weren't that arrogant as to have no other backups. Rather, I'd guess the directive was to push for the top targets up til and through then go for backups before the window ends.

Why would we want a backup option if one or two more weeks of hard negotiations got us the preferred choice?

Our midfield is still weak. Ideally Fellaini should not be starting 11 which he is at the moment. This was our weakest area last year and we have not improved it.

Carrick is a year older, we lost two mids mid year last season and it caught us at the end of last year where we were short.

I would like another young mid as well as a defensive mid this year.

All true but Spurs also have Eriksen who seems to be a little underrated.

His list is very dumb to begin with. No alternative.

No wonder clubs asking stupid price for average players.

I guess what Jose is doing is taking the calculated gamble for going in for a couple of players only - players he trusts or ones that will make a difference to the side.

Perisic at 40M Euros is not that bad a deal if you consider that Kyle Walker just went for 50M GBP...

The list Mourinho handed to Woodward back in March reportedly stretches to 25+ players, with numerous backups for every position. The fact that Ed has only managed to sign 2 of them, can't really be blamed on Mourinho.

I always wonder what Fergie would have made of the prices and wages in the transfer market nowadays after those 'no value' comments. We lost Hazard because his agent demanded 6mn which he didn't want to pay. At the time it seemed like we were maybe strapped a little for cash but in hindsight it seems as though his prudence was self imposed and he felt for 30mn he should be able to sign a De Rossi instead of what was available.

This is one of Mourinho's flaws and if he keeps doing this, it will crush the relationship between him and Ed. SAF will NEVER write out his chairman over transfers. SAF will do his own bit to make the transfer possible not whine to the media. I know the anti-Woody crew will enjoy this, but it's a terrible route for us as a club.

Ferguson was dealing with David Gill, who, by most accounts, is quite a different character to Woodward. Presumably, Mourinho believes that public chastisement is the way to get what he wants from Ed.

Agreed. But is there enough quality that would make our squad even a tad better than it already is in midfield? Jose might not find that value in Matic or Fabinho as many of us here want to believe - thus the lack of wholesale revamp of that area. Need a midfielder though to eventually replace Carrick; but Fellaini seems the fallback guy this season.

Not trying to be excited.

But I still hope that we end up seeing the best of Mikhi and Martial this year to offset the probable winger who might not come in.

The transfer market is strange though, so you never know!

If Mourinho is settling for only one more signing then I'd say it's a DM we're looking for.

I think we are looking for a winger and specifically Perisic. I think all his recent comments were aimed at Inter not willing to accept.

I think we will be fine in the midfield as we'll play most of our games with Herrera and Pogba in there and a no 10.

While that is unfortunate, United's previous manager always found a way to get results over the course of a season, without having the perfect player in every position (whether through his fault or the Glazers), Mourinho should too. The current team even without any further additions should be making top 4.

I would prefer us to get a DM, preferably Fab or Carvalho, but i will be reasonably satisfied with Matic as well. And leave the attacking midfield/wingers position to the current squad.
Also we need to think about Griezmann, now that we have Lukaku, do we still get him, if we do, then for what position.

That might be Griezmann, but we need to wait for him.
Having said that, it's possible our current players will step up. While right now we don't have a clear single star attacker, we do have a strong group with Mata, Rash the rest that can get like 20-25 goals collectively.
Of course if Rash will have enough chances in the attack and will play well, he can be that aid himself as well.

It is funny though that some people are getting on with the idea of how the squad is shit and unless we buy all world class players we won't even get in top 4 or something.

We hired managers especially top ones like Jose to make sure that he does his jobs as manager. If assembling a team with all top class players everywhere is the way to compete decently, I think they should just hire some of our fans here.

And, they say great managers are able to get the best out of their squad and making players to punch above their level. We will see, I guess.

Wrote in other thread : Lukaku Rashford and Perisic would be fastest front 3 in world football and terrify every defence it played against. Makes sense to me

Their speed would be largely irrelevant when teams sit deep against us (which they would in the vast majority of games).

In those situations athleticism doesn't matter much, quality does; and Rashford and Perisic don't have it.

1 out of the 4 players should have been Griezmann. Why dont we just settle for a DM and spunk on Griezmann again on January. Griezmann behind Lukaku is going to be fearsome.

Promote Mitchell above Blind and Darmian at the left back, Pereira and Tuanzebe to midfield, get Mahrez for the wing. SAF would've done something similar to that and still walked the league. Woodward not being able to sign the above average players that Mourinho wants for absurd sums of money shouldn't be an excuse for not challenging next season. Move on to the alternatives.

Sir Alex won titles with Anderson and cleverley in CM. Safe to say, Jose isn't as good.

If we are only going to make one signing, I think we are more likely to sign a DM, as there are alternatives to Dier and Matic who are gettable. The links will eventually come up once we move on from the priority targets. My personal preference would be to get a winger, but I don't think Jose will go into the season with the current midfield.

Its' not all doom and gloom though. If we sign a DM, atleast a serviceable one if not a world class player, then we must go all out to convince Zlatan to sign in January. He can provide the extra goals and assists we need, as SS or #10. So, its' not really as bad as it looks if we are definitely going to make atleast one more signing.

If Gill was in charge, Mourinho will do the same thing. These are some of the reasons some people have reservations regarding his appointment. SAF dealt with several chairmen, he never once gloat about transfers, or do you think SAF got all the players he wanted during his time.

So what he gave his list in March, no club will listen to transfer talks in March, regardless of when list was given, business cannot start until end of the season. A good manager will shut up and try to work with what he has or promote from the academy, not gloat to the press. The sad part of this is if Woody manage to get all players he wanted, his next line of complains will be I didn't get them in June so I didn't have time to work with them which is just sick.

Well, let's take out Conte and Pochettino immediately of that category, then.

Conte crying about new signings since the beginning of June, Pochettino we will not be swayed by the spending of others, we are stronger. See the difference?

The silly thing is that going public is likely to make it more difficult for Ed to get the targets at the right price. The likes of Inter must be loving their bargaining position when Mou goes public like this. What he should have said was that he was happy with the current squad, and that new transfers would be welcome but not absolutely necessary.

Essentially this.
Mous not happy we haven't signed certain players so decides to weaken our negotiating position in pursuit of them :wenger:

It's not the most united of fronts you'll ever see but then I suppose it is his head on the block come the end of season. you'd just think if he was serious about being here long-term he'd be keen to establish a strong relationship with Ed not hang the guy out to dry

Starting to get nervous now. We were woeful in the attacking 3rd last season and we have lost Ibra and Rooney and only signed Lukaku. We need another striker another winger. We lost 2 CM during the course of last season and signed none.

Crippling transfer window so far

Pochettino has never won anything, so managers like Jose and Conte are in a powerful position with owners and chairman. Managers like them are hard to find, Pochettino could go tomorrow, so he doesn't want to rock the boat.

What attacking threat did Rooney possess last season???

In spite of the goals, Zlatan missed some blatant chances too.

Granted I still think we're one short in the attacking front but I think a solid midfielder would ease the defensive burden of the attacking players.

What a ridiculous over-dramatisation.

In an attacking sense we were very good for the majority of last season. Our only problem was finishing the numerous chances we'd create in most games.

Ibrahimovich missed more easy chances than any other player by a huge margin (18 in total), with a good portion costing us 2 points. Likewise Pogba, Rashford, Rooney & Lingard also missed their fair share also.

If we create the same amount of chances for Lukaku and he performs as he did last season he'll score close to 30 goals straight away. With Pogba & Mkhitaryan having a season in the PL under their belts I'd also expect much better seasons from them. Likewise the fact that the team in general has a season under Mourinho. That's before even looking at our young players who've had another season to mature (Martial, Rashford, Pogba, Pereira, maybe even Shaw). Hell even not having the burden of Rooney coming on ahead of the aforementioned attackers is a huge boost.

There is a hell of a lot to be positive about, even with no more additions.

It is time we appointed a DoF whose main role would be re recruitment and take the pressure off Woody.

It seems every year we go through a transfer saga and in most cases we struggle to either negotiate a reasonable fee or complete the transfer in good time.

By no means i an having a go at Woody but if he had Mourinho's transfer list since March with various options then it is disappointing we are still behind in recruiting players.

The current squad is grossly under rated but I don't blame people for that because they just had an underwhelming season. But I predict players like Pogba, Miki, Rashford, Lingard, Mata and Martial, will look like new players next season.

With regards to our attacking midfielders; only Mkhitaryan, Mata and Martial are good enough (and even then there are question marks over Martial). Lingard is average and Rashford isn't much better.

That's nowhere near good enough, especially when we usually play a 4-2-3-1 in the league and would probably need six good options for the three positions ideally.

What team in world football has 6 great attacking players for 3 positions, all of which being better than the likes of Rashford?

City (Sane, Sterling, Dr Bruyne, Silva) and Madrid (Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, Isco, James) are probably the closest with maybe 4 or 5 and even Madrid are looking to offload James.

Every team show a drop in quality after their first XI and United have a history of slotting poorer players in without it affecting performances.

Plus we have plenty of versatility - I expect us to play 4-3-3 in more difficult matches and I imagine Carrick and Fellaini will play their part, along with a new signing I'd guess and possibly Blind also. With that formation you have Mata, Martial, Mkhitaryan, Rashford fighting for 2 positions.

I look at Chelsea winning the league last year... Who were their great attacking players? Hazard and Costa with the occasional meaningful contributions of Pedro/Willian?

Not to mention the fact that Mourinho's teams tend to win trophies from the back 5 more than the front 4.
