We haven't even signed a player of note in July since about 2009 have we?

Has there ever been a study of what time of the day and what day of the week transfer deals have been announced? If someone looked at every transfer announced in the last 5 years between European clubs, it might be possible to ascertain if there are particular times when they are more or less likely? It might be completely randomly dispersed. Or it might transpire that deals are most likely to be announced at 10 oclock am, or on Wednesdays, or something like that. Conversely, if statistically there was evidence that transfers are rarely announced late on Friday afternoons, we could all put it out of our minds and get on with something else.

I honestly don't think we're even in negotiations for him tbh. The SKY story said we hadn't made any contact since the original bid was rejected, not just that we hadn't made another bid.

I reckon we had a mild interest, at the right price, and we've now moved onto other targets.

Complete and utter horseradish

Eds just waiting to sign schweinsteiger so he can drive across in his new Chevrolet and pick him and schneiderlin up at the airport. 2 birds with 1 stone and all that

Don't say that on this thread. You'll be abused.

Nah, Sam appears to be the resident pessimist in the Schneiderlin thread.

Like when they rejected our Shaw bid and we never returned until a month later.

I dont think we would bid 20M and forget about Schneiderlin over the 5m difference.
IMO the 20m bid got the ball rolling and we are just dotting the i's and crossing the t's now.

That doesnt sound like us at all though does it? We're more than happy to spend a good £10 million over the "right price"

Anyone else surprised that City aren't in for him too? A huge upgrade on the Fernando/dinho and Toure in the deeper role.

I dont think they are ready to get rid of Fernandinho or Toure yet and they primarily play a 4-4-2 so there is no space for him there IMO.

You know what other club we didn't make any contact with after enquiring once? PSV. We don't walk away from targets.

Nah, Sam appears to be the resident pessimist in the Schneiderlin thread.

I'm pessimistic because the only reliable info we have (from Sky and Koeman himself) is that we bid over two weeks ago, it was rejected, and we haven't contacted Southampton since then. Which goes against all these theories that we're trying to negotiate a fee, structure the deal etc etc Can't do that if we're not even in contact with them.

Guess it all depends on how badly we want him.

There's a difference between making an enquiry, then returning with a bid (that you know will be accepted) once other clubs get involved. And making a bid, then not making any more contact once said bid is rejected.

Yes, I'm pessimistic with all this, but that's because the only reliable info we have indicates that we're far from concluding any sort of deal here. Despite all the ITK 'it will be done this week' stuff.

IMO our transfer season would be similar to last year, in the sense that we would only do 1-2 deals before the Tour.

Sounds like a R project in the making :). Would be surprised if there was statistical significance for one particular day, even two I think. Most likely it's all over the place.

United's relationship with Southampton sounds very solid.

With Shaw last year; no bickering or to-ing and fro-ing. But IIRC it wasn't a case of waking up one morning and finding out we had agreed a fee. There was some initial media talk that United were going in strongly for Shaw, then it quietened down a bit, before the signing was confirmed. Am I misremembering?

I have a feeling the same thing is happening here.

We should remember that we are buying another club's player and the fans of that club want to see their club fighting to keep a player. They don't want to see Southampton take the first bid they get any more than we want to see United accept Real's first offer for DDG. But for all we know Soton and Utd have not only agreed a fee but agreed a strategy for breaking the transfer too.

United either want Schneiderlin (in which case a deal has been done and we're just letting Southampton play out the string for the sake of their image) or we don't and the media are just making stuff up. I will go for the first one.

If a deal is done what benefit does either team have in him training with southampton. No agreement yet i'd say.

Play out the string. Come to training Morgan, do some light cardio work, don't make any noises in the media, and you will be a United player. Not a big stretch of the imagination imo. Also gives Southampton time to get the replacement in. I'm confident we are at least not going to let the deal slip, if there is any more negotiating to be done it's probably just about the structure/breakdown of the fee.

It's honestly puzzling that we have not signed this lad yet. He fits the bill and is well within reach financially. It's possible that we are focusing way too much on the battle with Madrid or we could be looking to sign schweinsteiger as a bigger priority. I'd be pissed if we don't sign him up.

The same reliable Sky who reported we'd agreed a deal with Gundogan.

Did I just see someone call Sky reliable? Yes I'm sure Sky Sports' Amy Lewis, AKA the Woodward and Bernstein of football reporting, got the hot goss that nobody else managed to find. I'm sure she wasn't just fed a line. No siree.

They're still far more reliable then any of the ITK wannabes or tabloid journos on twitter. Which is pretty much where all the 'hype' for this transfer has come from.

They also had Jim White tell us Benatia was on a plane to United last summer towards deadline day. Sky are not really any better than the rest.

We've kept our transfer business this summer relatively under wraps, unlike some of the last few summers.

Maybe LVG don't want him? Imagine us start the season without a Carrick replacement. I'll be moaning in here non-stop.

I've currently got a little sub-contract with Schneider electronics and all I can think whenever I see their name is that we are signing Schneiderlin or when we are fitting something I'll be saying "Mate, you've threaded those wires through beautifully" I take it we are signing him though as since we were linked with him I've picked this up. It's fate.

That was one occasion, he could've possibly been given false information from his sources.

Usually sky are reliable, but I admit recently they just seem to be using their 'Sky Sources' slogan to get clicks. Whatever happened to Seamus Coleman?

It's not once off at all, they've got it wrong quite a few times. As someone else mentioned above Gundogan was another more recently.

For me I've always gone with BBC as being the most reliable, more often then not they only print what is absolute fact.

You have to watch what they say. If they have a journo put a tweet out like ''Man Utd close in on Ramos'' then it should be taken with a pinch of salt, although still better to hear than from the telegraph or somewhere like that. If they say ''Ramos will have a medical at United tomorrow'' on their website, then it can be taken as pretty much fact. They are the 3rd most reliable outlet, behind the BBC and the official site.

Probably, with their financial backing its hard not to be up there with the Beeb.

I guess I am wary of them sometimes because I get the impression they create rumours for their Sky bet offers as well.
