Based on that video, MS should definitely only hold, the passing is not imaginative enough to be a #8. For instance his long balls don't land into the receiver's stride. I see he has passing stats of 89% completion. If we have Carrick and MS at the same time I predict a stagnant midfield.

I really, really hope he's not played as #8. He's not a bad passer, but I want someone who's quicker to release the ball. Seeing Fellaini there last season was the stuff of nightmares. Schneiderlin is obviously much better on the ball, but I think we should be prepared to move away from the deep-lying playmaker paradigm. There's nothing wrong with having our playmakers in the box-to-box positions. In fact, having two midfield playmakers ahead of a destroyer will make us a lot more difficult to defend against.

So you guys are just basing that he shouldn't be number 8 in one game against the league champions?

If Carrick and Bastian remain fit I predict subs bench for Morgan. I'd say even Carrick and Basti paired together against easier opposition might be too defensive.

Of course not. Seen him plenty of times.

Keane and Scholes used to take one touch before they played the correct pass. Carrick takes two touches. Schneiderlin takes three. There's no shame in not being as good as them, but he's a different kind of player. Speed of passing is probably even more important in our current setup than it was in Fergie's 4-4-2. That obviously begs the question about where we can make the most of his talents. For me, the answer is obviously as a holding midfielder.

I'm now going to moan about gifs, so prepare for boredom:

Ahem. There are too many gifs on this site (not including the excellent efforts by Olly, Code, Sam etc etc.) By the time each thread loads up, we've signed everybody in Europe, so I'm even more behind the times than is usual for someone living in Victorian Wales. I appreciate that I, Gifhater General, am fighting a losing battle here; yea, like King Canute trying to order the waves into retreat, I am as they say, pissing into the wind whilst using far too many commas. But...I appeal to you as fellow denizens of the Caf, stop posting gifs all over the shop...or else!1! *vague threats follow*

Well well well look what we have here ... It seems old man Jenkins can't handle the heat, well Jenkins(Or should I say Grandpa Jenkins)I suggest you find yourself some time altering device and go back to a time where you and your browser can handle it, because the only thing that's going to change around here is me and my buddy's kicking your ass. Got it.
Actual Steven you make a very valid point. Low quality internet courage is not just a problem that effect the individual but us all, as Frank Speir, director at Prime Purchase said in 2011 "Slow broadband speeds are having a definite effect on the market. It's becoming a much bigger issue." It really is today forgotten issue or should I say timed out issue (ha ha ha ha).

Agreed. Schneiderlin's advantage over Blind is his mobility and intensity in the defense. Using him as a number 8 seems rather pointless and as a waste of money.

Probably the best set of options we've had in midfield since 07-08 when Hargreaves wasn't dead and Anderson wasn't fat.

I'm not sure about that. Having someone like Carrick basically means you can throw 7 players forward with only him and the 2 central defenders back, without worrying so much about ball supply and escape route
Ditto, then again i'm not sure that van gaal regard carrick's passing as vital as SAF did; especially not as a DM otherwise why would he have called out for 2 box to box midfielders?

I think we should play Carrick Smalling central defensive pair.

Rojo Carrick Smalling Darmian has a bit of everything and the average height is great.

Slept with the excitement and feeling giddy about Bastian and woke up to Morgan! Holy feck this transfer window has been surreal. Great work from Woody and LVG. For a moment we thought we might be leaving this for late but hats off to the board and management for handling this whole transfer business in complete secrecy.

I absolutely do not know what we will do next and who we will sign. Media is going to go crazy and link us with anyone and everyone in the market now. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!:drool::drool:

I will be quite pleased if we sign Oblak and Ramos/Otamendi. Then we are done!! Just realised the season is still a month away!!! Can't wait to see the line up :devil:

I was a bit worried after the Schweinsteiger signing as we still looked as if we were lacking a physical defensive midfield option. Blind and Schneiderlin play the same role very differently and there is no way we can't find a great working trio considering we have more or less every possible tactical option there is.

Di Maria - Great dribbling and direct RCM/AM
Mata - Great passer and creative playmaker, would be wonderful in a possession team.
Herrera - Great engine and as complete as you can be.
Schweinsteiger/Carrick - Amazing passing range and experience.
Schneiderlin - Great physical type of defensive midfielder
Blind - Great pressing type of defensive midfielder

Even Fellaini is worth a shout and we could use his abilities when it counters the opponents, as we saw just how good that could be then. And just how bad it could be if the opponent were actually prepared to play him and had the players to do so.

I can even see Schweinsteiger and Carrick playing together for tactical reasons, either to calm down and hold off a lead, or if we lose our grip on the game and LVG wants to regain the dominance of possession.

We've never had a squad that had a midfield that were this good.(Clearly we've had better first team central midfielders.)

Carrick is not a CB at all.

He is not but he has shown is capable to play there and he was performing great if I recall. On top of that his passing range will make him a great option for ball playing defender which the manager seems to want. And we can fit the Sch brothers + Herrera in midfield.

He 'got off the plane'....

 Phil Jones!

Really happy with this signing. This is the player i wanted for our midfield this summer. A midfield 3 of Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Herrera will dominate in the league, and most teams in Europe as well.

This is quite surreal. Didn't expect everything to accelerate the way it has.

Great job by the club. The midfield is genuinely strong now.

It is very likely LVG will push on with his 4-3-3 no? Would you think that Bastian, Morgan and either Mata or Herrera with more freedom would work?

He has never really shown that he is capable of playing there. He has struggled basically every time he played CB for us. He is poor in the air, not very strong and has no pace. Him playing CB full time would be a disaster.

There is absolutely no way Schneiderlin will be on the bench. For me, he's an automatic starter. He's too good not to be. He has everything to go and be a worldie.

Schweinsteiger and Carrick should alternate especially with their age and injury issues. My fear is that this signing means Herrera is back to the bench again.

For me, it's Depay who'll have to settle for the bench more than he'd like, that is if Di Maria stays. Talk that van Gaal will employ a 4-3-3 system, Schweiny, Schneiderlin & Herrera, Wazza up top, Mata out on the right and Di Maria out left. The form Ander was in second half of last season was, again, imo, a defining moment in his United career, he went from being in and out of the team to undroppable. He offers too much going forward from midfield.

I think the point is we should have no automatic starters, it's unhealthy for the. LvG isn't afraid to bench anyone that isn't performing. Di Maria last year is a perfect example to illustrate this point.

Herrera is a different style of player to Carrick, Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger, he's suitable for a more advanced role.

Players will compete and LvG will pick whoever is best suited to the game. I don't expect any midfielder to play more than 25 league games
