I don't buy it either. Giggs said a few weeks ago that we're going to strengthen (or get) a spine for the team. One player, no matter how good, can't do that on his own. I hope we're still in for him.
we have already had 2.9 new players

Manchester United are still interested in signing Southampton’s French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin this summer. The past 24 hours has been great for Manchester United supporters who have seen Italian right-back Matteo Darmian sign for the club and a deal to bring Bastian Schweinsteiger to the club from Bayern Munich. Morgan Schneiderlin is a player that has been long linked to Manchester United with a bid of £20 million already made and rejected.

Schneiderlin is a player that United need, not only will he add strength in-depth to the squad, but he can be a pillar for the club, fortifying the defensive midfield position, with Daley Blind a likely back-up player, leaving Michael Carrick and Schweinsteiger to play further up the pitch, whether together, which may not be likely, or in rotation. The likes of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera could occupy a central attacking midfield role, leaving a striker and two wingers to complete the lineup.

The French midfielder travelled to Austria with Southampton, failing to play in a friendly against Red Bull Leipzig in which Southampton losing 5-4 on Wednesday. On Saturday, Southampton participated in the Audi Quattro Cup in Salzburg playing Valencia in their first 45 minute match, losing 1-0, again with Schneiderlin not playing any part in the match. A third place play-off would be the clubs third match of their pre-season campaign against hosts Red Bull Salzburg, losing 2-0, completing a hat-trick of defeats, all without Morgan Schneiderlin taking part.

Schneiderlin is still a target for Manchester United and late last week the club were still confident of securing the player ahead of their departure for Seattle on Monday, where they play their first pre-season fixture this summer. Sky Sports report that United are likely to try and sign the Frenchman for around £25 million this summer, which would be a reasonable fee for the player, who would no doubt strengthen the clubs squad this summer. With the fact that United seem to have started their transfer business with a bang, many expect great things to happen this summer.
What is this absolute shite?

my verdict:

woody trying to resurrect the stupid money spent on shaw and wish to make a redemption with soton over this deal.

suggestion:

make a pitch to clasie and make sure this is leaked to the media

Sounds to me more like he's been told it by someone, but doesn't know whether to believe it.
Possibly, but whenever its United that gives out info, all journos are in sync with both the timing and the content of the info. Doesn't appear to be the case here.

Hope we don't pay a cent more than 20m for him. Its a fair price for someone who has never played in the CL or proven himself at the top level for a consistent period of time.

Im guessing we're being quite tight on the pursestrings this year because it seems like we have quite a few spots to fill (Striker and Centreback) even if we sign Morgan Schneiderlin.

We're going to regret this badly if he ends up signing for Arsenal while we dither over few million quid.

This should have been done and dusted way back.

So he's worth less then Lallana, Lovren, Herrera and Fellaini?

I'm starting to think we aren't in for him. You would of thought we would be hearing murmurings today with us flying out tomorrow, i mean yeah i know he could catch a later flight another day but why do that if we don't need to.

If van Gaal wants him, we will get him. a few million is not going to stop this going through.

Its all part of the negotiation.

Certain we will get him....soon.

This. Like I said earlier, if we're serious about him then we'll get him.

I don't think we should be messing around with this one. There are players you can mess around with, like schweinsteiger where he will stay or he will join united because of the size of the club and the mnager relationship. If City miss on Delph you have to think signing MS is a home grown no brainer. Fits in two of their positions, is a lot better than delph, they have no FFP threats

As you say, Schneiderlin is better than Delph and is still home-grown, if they wanted him they would have gone for him instead of Delph in the first place.

Feyenoord have announced that midfielder Jordy Clasie will not feature in their upcoming friendly matches as there is “concrete interest” for him from another club, believed to be Southampton.

If true, Morgan Schneiderlin could be clear to join Manchester United as Clasie will be seen as a direct replacement for him.

Clasie enjoyed a fine campaign in the Eredivisie this season and he has previously worked with Saints boss Ronald Koeman.

Feyenoord’s official Twitter account confirmed that the Dutchman will play no part in their pre-season friendlies while negotiations continue.

“Jordy Clasie will not play against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Sunday. The reason is that concrete interest has been shown for the captain from another club,” they said.

“The club and player have therefore agreed that he will not play as long as talks on a possible transfer are ongoing.”

Schneiderlin was also left out of Southampton’s pre-season friendly against Valencia on Saturday.

I wouldn't mind the player; his passing from the back his fantastic.

Have doubts about his mobility. Asked @Sly if he can shed some light on it, but he didn't bother to reply. :(

With Schweinsteiger, Carrick, Blind, Herrera, Fellaini, Mata and possibly Pereira we do have the numbers for our three midfield positions. I am having doubts about our desire to get Schneiderlin. We may not actually go for him and concentrate on acquiring a CB and a striker.

Eh what? I didn´t get an alert for that. I try to respond to everyone but i didn´t get the notice sorry mate. Carvalho isn´t the quickest player but he compensates that with a superior positional sense and good tactical awareness. But like i´ve said multiple times the United link is dead. No mentions on our press. The latest reports were about Arsenal and now Real Madrid after the Euro U21. I don´t think Carvalho will move this year. I think Jesus convinced him to stay another year in order to have the same effect and influence as he did with Matic. He even opted to comeback to work one week before it was expected. Next year i´m 99% sure he will move. In my opinion, a Carvalho United move doesn´t make sense with Carrick still around.

they are obviously looking for a deal on delph since he wouldn't be playng anyway, now that's gone they have to at least be thinking about this for considerably more cash

I agree. I am a big fan of this lad. But it looks like van Gaal wants a different type of player. Lots of movement and passing. That is why he has gone for the players he has...oh yes. We wil get MS. ;)

Might be worth pointing out that on Thursday, Herbert said Schweinsteiger was likely to stay at Bayern. I don't think he's that in the know.

He was clearly a David Moyes target. Moyes is showing that he was following Sporting´s academy closely since he just signed Bruma from Galatasaray.

Will not be satisfied if we don't get another central midfielder - Schneiderlin or someone else of good quality. Carrick, injury prone and old. Schweinsteiger injury prone. Fellaini, Herrera and Blind? Powell? Pereira? we need more quality & depth if we want to mount a title challenge and compete in the Champions League.

I think this is off. No doubt we put a £20m bid in but when it was clear Schweinsteiger was available we changed our focus, we fly out to the US tomorrow and our Schneiderlin bid was put in weeks ago they would have had this one wrapped up by now imo.

Southampton target Jordy Clasie, the club's choice to replace Manchester United-linked Morgan Schneiderlin, has been withdrawn from Feyenoord's friendly match to hold transfer talks.

Feyenoord take on German side Fortuna Dusseldorf on Sunday but the club have announced via their official Twitter feed that their captain Clasie will miss out after agreeing to let him discuss a summer move.

"Jordy Clasie will not play against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Sunday. Then reason is that concrete interest has been shown for the captain from another club.

Jordy Clasie speelt vanmiddag niet tegen Fortuna Düsseldorf. De reden is *** er concreet serieuze belangstelling is getoond voor de captain.

— Feyenoord Rotterdam (@Feyenoord) July 12, 2015
"The club and the player have therefore agreed that he will not play as long as talks on a possible transfer are ongoing."

Southampton are said to be the club in talks with the player after manager Ronald Koeman recently confirmed the Netherlands international is his first choice to replace Schneiderlin, who is allowed to leave the south coast club should his valuation be met in full.

"He is a good player, a young player, who is ready to make a step up and show his qualities at a higher level," Koeman said on 6 July.

Clasie has also appeared open to the idea of a move to the Premier League side, recently tellingAlgemeen Dagblad: "I have read Koeman's comments. If Schneilderlin leaves, we will see."

Despite confirming a deal is in place for Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger on Saturday, Manchester United are still hoping to sign Schneiderlin to complete Louis van Gaal's overhaul in midfield.

Southampton rejected an opening offer from the Old Trafford club last week but Koeman later suggested United would have no problem in meeting the full asking price, thought to be £27m.

The Manchester Evening News suggest van Gaal is still eager to bring in the France international.

The Guardian add United hope to have a deal in place before the club depart for their preseason tour of United States on Monday, claiming the club are hopeful of sealing a deal for £25m.

Schneiderlin would become United's fourth arrival of the summer with Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian already confirmed with Schweinsteiger to follow when he completes his medical.

Quite possibly, just think it's still quite telling that all the Southampton journalists still think he's on his way here. Time will tell I guess.

If there is no one else in the running why must we rush to sign him?We are in a position of bargaining strength here and being patient makes it difficult for Soton because they have a player who wants to go and they possibly need to find his replacement. I think Koeman will blink first.

In any case now that we have Bastian our midfield situation is no longer desperate. Even if we miss out on Schneiderlin we could have several others planned as back ups. Who knows how many people Woody is talking to?

I still think we are going to get him.

I always find this gross overreacting a bit odd. He's a 25 years old regular at Soton. It's not like we're missing on Ronaldinho here...

Judging by some posts here you would think he is the reincarnation of Vieira, Makelele and Roy fecking Keane all in one.

I think its more to do with the style of player, these deep lying midfielders are hard to find these days, there seems to be a real lack of quality DM's and then you throw in his other attributes like his passing and movement and he seems the perfect LvG signing.

I can see where you're both coming from. That's not to say I don't want him. I'd really like us to sign him, think he's a very good player. But given he's never so much as played a European game for example, I think some of the reaction if he didn't come would be excessive.

Ooooor quite simply a player of ilk that we're still missing and probably a missing puzzle in the midfield jigsaw. Look at how much transfer of Herrera helped us, I imagine we'd have somewhat close effect if we transferred Schneiderlin in. Probably the part that's the most annoying to most people is that he's well within our reach, we just need to pay a certain amount of cash to SOTON (and we may as well be fecking around with 5-6 mln quid) and he's as good as ours.

We're pretty much one or two steps away from solving our midfield problems that have been our pain in the ass for years. Not to mention that we simply need to reinforce our team as we're back in Europe and we don't want to fall behind the rest.

Then how about waiting to see what happens? If reports are believed we are still in for him and will most likely get him. This place is unbearable atm. Ppl in the Schweinsteiger thread complaining about his signature as though he wasn't one of the best players around and bitching in this very thread about the potential mistake from us not going for Schneiderlin when everything indicates that we are actually on the verge of signing him.
