Seems clear from Koeman's comments that he'll join us pretty soon. If the rumors are true and we are also signing Darmian then both of them would be perfect signings.

Not the highest of profiles but absolutely perfect for us.
I have not watched Darmian. How is he compared to say Rafael (not considering his injury record, just general play)?

I don't, simply using common sense.

Common sense seldom applies to asking prices when it comes to Utd. Just saying though I do agree with you.

My point is that we have no real idea of what Soton want other than media reports and what we think

Both your articles are according to some media house. No quotes. We simply dont know the actual amounts they want. It's speculation. I dont think they want £40m but then I again I've no idea. They might ask for 40 but would settle for 30-35 for example
Not everything written in media is wrong, its about separating the crap, both seem sensible logical and sound reasonable, I believe them both

Come on FFS, you're being pedantic.

Have not seen him too much, but he's much better defensively (he started as i central defender). Not as good as Rafael coming forward, but not bad at all. He has played in a 3-5-2 formation, mostly on the left side this year but are better on the right. Taller (182 cm) than Rafael.

But this is the Schneiderlin-thread, which I just reminded myself of :)

Less gung-ho, more solid defensively. He's the first quality full back we've produced in quite a while now, even though it's taken people some time to notice his talent (Abate and Antonelli haven't really kicked on, despite promising starts and De Sciglio has stagnated but he still has time to fulfill his potential). He'll fit right in and I'm sure he'll have a really good first season. After the Rossi heartbreak, I'm quite excited to see another Italian at OT.

Cheers guys! Now my inner muppet wants both transfers to happen asap! :D

Calm down. No I'm not being pedantic. You know good and well what I'm saying is a possibility. I honestly don't believe we're haggling over 5m for example. I suspect the initial asking price was quite high and our bid was some way off. Which means we have to negotiate that down to the most we're willing to pay. So no, I'm not being pedantic. I was having a go at those who assume based on very little that we're haggling 'over a few million'.

Not worried about this transfer at all now. Been confirmed that United have made a bid for him and it's only a matter of time until he becomes a United player. A few million is not going to stop United from signing him. My fear was that he was not on LvG's rader at all.

Agree with this. I feel like Schneiderlin was impossible for Van Gaal to ignore this season. Feel he may have a similar impact that Strootman may have had, if he had reliable knees.

Why would you bid for him if he wasn't on big Louis's radar?

But your last bid was 2 weeks ago - why wait this long?

If ware holding out on Schneiderlin for Schweinsteiger we are dumb as feck !

This is like Herrera's non-transfer in 2013. Holding out until the death for Fabregas and then missing out on Ander.

No doubt 'imposters' will show up at St Mary's at some stage this week.

Woody trying to be a little sensible this year with over paying. We will end up paying close to what Southampton want, but at least he's not rushing in with a suitcase full of cash at the start.

Good on him. Wouldn't have thought Glaziers would be too happy with splashing the cash away, even of it is his commercial brilliance that generates most of it.

Gotta take baby steps given just how well known we've become for throwing money around. Hopefully, it'll pay off after a couple of years if Woody keeps it up and we'll start seeing some much better deals.

Eyes open see if he goes on tour today. If not, this could be announced today.

No worries about this one. Koeman's quotes basically suggest he wants to leave, we're interested and regardless of what he says about us not bidding for a while - I don't believe that.

He'll probably lose his shit if Saints don't let him go this year too, so its not really a question of if he leaves, but where to and when.

I'm pretty sure he's joining us, I just hope he does so before we bugger off on tour and have to make do without most of our new signings for the pre-season prep, again.

MEN says Schweinstieger's signing is "imminent". If that's the case then it answers the question as to why we've been prevaricating over Schneiderlin. Great pity because the latter is a better investments imo and might just be a better player too - given Schweinstieger's recent history. LvG will no doubt argue that he needs the experience that the German offers. Anyway I doubt he's going to buy both but watch this space.

Maybe; but we did bid for him while we were perusing Schweinsteiger.

With Schneiderlin and Schweinsteigger, it really shouldn't be a case of either or. Truth is, we probably need both. Otherwise, one injury to Carrick, we slot in a DM to replace him, and we're back to starting Fellaini again. Not that it's a really bad thing, but LvG mentioned our squad as being very imbalanced. I don't see how signing one midfielder alone will bring the balance we need. Especially when we're (hopefully) going to play a lot more midweek games. And i really don't want to see Rooney in midfield again.

Get this done Woody!

Except that everybody accepts Schneiderlin is worth more than the £20m we've reportedly bid.

Nobody says we always pay over the odds, but there have been a few instances in the last couple of years where we've paid much more than the player's value.

If we can p**s away £60m on Di Maria, a player we've struggled to integrate into the team, we can cough up a few extra million to secure a midfielder we really need. If we lose out on Schneiderlin because of petty haggling, Woody will have earned all the criticism he gets. He'll deserve to be tarred and feathered.

The key word there is "reportedly". We've been linked with about a hundred players this summer by various elements of the press which suggests to me that they know precisely bugger all about what is actually going on, yet a lot of people bizarrely believe anything and everything they read.

United clearly have money to spend so clubs will obviously try and fleece them. In this case Southampton were lucky to hold on to the player last year and frankly we're in a position of strength if we want him. I very much suspect all deals rely on an agreement being reached with the player first and the club last (despite what's supposed to happen) and if he therefore wants to go the cahnces are it'll happen.

It's also patently obvious that a lot of fans completely underestimate how long it can take to get transfer done. Most are underway months before they happen - if they ever do, and there are lots of reasons why deals can be complicated - both personal and otherwise. For example - what's to say this isn't all agreed in principle and the selling club are trying to bring in a repalcement before it happens so as not to get fleeced by whatever club they're buying from?

Too much panic on here and too many assumptions being made by people who know nothing except what they've read online. I'm more minded to be patient and see what happens over the next month or so.

MEN now leading with Darmian as the imminent deal. A bit hasty with Schweinstieger? Good - perhaps Schneiderlin is still on.

Koeman's most recent quotes suggest to me that he's ours. I'm not sure why some are still so unsure.
