There have been some new developments regarding Jason West and Vincent Zampella, the two heads of Infinity Ward that left the company under unique circumstances. As of this week they announced they would be creating Respawn Entertainment, a developer partnered with EA that would retain the rights to all the intellectual properties they develop. While this isn't a first in the world of gaming, these kind of deals are reserved for the select few, so The Sess decided to use this week's Soapbox as a forum for discussing what this may mean for the gaming industry as a whole. Do you think the ripples of this agreement will shake up how other publishers and developers work?
So what exactly does IW own? I assume they own the name Modern warfare™ but not Call of Duty™
Activision owns everything at IW, trademarks, code, art, tools, engine, etc. So these guys are going to have to start from scratch.
Despite all the wars, conflicts and battles that have featured in videogames over the years, perhaps the most thrilling stand-off is occurring right now in the real world.
Since Infinity Ward's top dogs Jason West and Vince Zampella were sacked by Activision, only to form Respawn Studios and sign a deal with EA, there's been a mass exodus of Infinity Ward's top members, which shows no sign of ending any time soon.
A month after West and Zampella's removal, Infinity Ward lost two more high ranking members when lead designer, Todd Alderman and lead software engineer, Francesco Gigliotti both left the company
The Infinity Ward exodus continued when veteran programmer Jon Shirin announced his resignation from the company on Twitter on Monday - followed by designer Mackey McCandlish.
Over the past week the ordeal appeared to pick up pace when Lead designers Zied Reike and Steve Fukuda, programmer Rayme Vinson and lead artist Chris Cherubini were all said to have left Infinity Ward on Wednesday.
The saga continued yesterday when long-time Infinity Ward staffers Mark Grigsby and Paul Messerly - lead animator and lead character animator, respectively - left the studio, according to their LinkedIn profiles.
To date it's known that at least 10 per cent of Infinity Ward's staff have departed the company - whether they will join Respawn is yet to be seen.
I can't wait to play the new maps - got to wait a month for them to come out for PS3. They look great on YouTube - especially the one in the appartment buildings.
Doesn't look good for MW3.
I have just started using the M16A4 after always using the M4 before that, wow it's so much better. I thought the 3 bursts would feck me up but it's really helpful. Usually I can surprise the enemy quite well but it takes a shitload of bullets to kill them, now I'm doing awesome. Went 21 - 4 a minute ago, haven't had a good score like that for a while, usually really close like 9 - 8.
I find the ACR to be the best so far. Tried the M16A4 for a bit but could not deal with the 3 bursts at all. Is it really so much better? Will give it a try again.
Not played this game for ages. Couldn't get enough of MW1. Proves to me that this one is no where near as good.
Na, in most aspects it's better.
Today's new game update came with a message about the new maps being available in the Store.
There's nothing yet in the store, however.
