Call of Duty 7 details emerge
Monday 22-Feb-2010 3:24 PM Character names and Vietnam setting unveiled in casting call

A Hollywood casting call seems to have outed details about Call Of Duty 7 - revealing names of characters and news of the title's Vietnam setting.

The ad mentions a Call of Duty-related "voice over/motion capture" for an Activision "video game" - and describes lead character Frank Barnes as being part of an elite Vietnam unit.

VG247 reports that Barnes is part of an elite Vietnam unit: the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (SOG).

SOG was a real-life special operations unit which conducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during the Vietnam War.

Barnes is described as "a fiercely patriotic veteran of WW2... A solid leader, possessed with an excellent ability to assess and respond to any situation quickly and decisively".

Other characters include Joseph Lewis, a "very physically fit" black man in his 20s; Jason Hudson, a white man in his 30s with "over 15 years of military experience, making him an excellent tactician and mission co-coordinator"; and Kristina Ivanova, a Russian-born martial arts expert and CIA operative who's "calm to the point of being cold and detached".

CVG reported earlier this year that the Call Of Duty 7 release date is coming this November.

Activision subsequently confirmed the game - but said that it confirmed the gamedoesn't expect it to sell as well as Modern Warfare 2.

They sure like to milk this shit! They'll ruin it if they are not careful, people will simply get bored of it.

Like they have done with Fifa?

Sports games are different, as you very well know, even though I personally think those are a rip off, and could be supported for years with downloadable content - so could this. It's exactly the same thing over and over and over again on a yearly basis. However, playing and watching football for example is something important to many people's daily lives, and something that they for the most part understand, a hobby even. Blowing people's heads off isn't!

I'm currently on my mission to complete every challenge, which in all fairness is gonna be a fecking cnut to do!

Firstly, because you basically have to get (at least) 1000 kills with every primary weapon to get to lv. 8. Not to mention the HS' and penetration kills which can be a bitch as well.

And then you have some of the ridiculous ones, like getting a game winning kill by wacking someone off with a crate and HS'ing two people with one shot(!)

Well, they actually need updating don't they, at least in the data sense? Changing sponsors, changing teams in competitions, changing players, etc.

Perhaps, but most people actually think they're getting a vastly improved version every year. . .when frankly it's never the case.

A 'nam version sounds interesting, going to be a while before it see's the light of day though I guess.

Not really, this November it says and thats about right considering the past 3 games releases. The whole alternate developer strategy works great for Activision's profits but not great for us the gamer in the long run, the FPS market is flooded with titles and I would prefer the 'main' team Infinity Ward go away and develop a game over the next 3-4 years and come back with something as great as COD 4 again.

Didn't see the mention of November, only skim read the article, still that's not exactly imminent.

Agree with your point about them overdoing it, would rather wait a bit longer for something that really blew us away rather than a new skin on essentially the same game.

Cant you do that with DLC?

This is exactly the point - can't they do the next COD with DLC? I understand that they can't because not everyone has a HDD and not everyone has their console connected to the internet.

The point I was making however, is that sports games do need updating in some way or another, and also it's something related to something real that people are passionate about in their everyday lives. Personally I don't play sports games, and find them pointless, but that's by the by. The danger with milking a cow too much is that people will eventually get fed up of drinking milk.

In terms of online play, as long as COD7 doesn't have a ridiculously overpowered MP40, it will probably be the best COD of all time. Treyarch are the better games developer, despite what most people think. COD4 and especially MW2 are extremely dumbed down for the casual gamer, and therefore require relatively little skill.

Most console FPS require little skill, and I dont agree Treyarch are better than Infinity Ward for numerous reasons. For one Treyarch basically build games off the engines created by IW, I have never enjoyed a COD game made by them as much as IW versions.

The only thing IW has done wrong is alienate their pc gamer market, but I don't think they will lose too much sleep over it.

Do seriously expect them to release a whole new game as DLC? MW2 is built on a different engine, it has 18 brand new levels, 16 new multi player levels and numerous improvements.

If people are willing to buy sports games every year just for slightly improved graphics, game play, kits, players names etc, then i dont see why people will stop playing the new versions of COD anytime soon.

Until something come along that satisfies the needs of players more than COD, they it will still be top dog.

It only became "top dog" with the release of 4. Before that it was not really that relevant.

As for the new engine, really? You might want to check that.

I think that you'll find it's a patched version of the COD4 engine.

WAW used a slightly patched COD4 engine. Nobody is talking about the IW games here in any case.

I know it only became really popular after COD4, but still, as it stands, unless something comes along that’s better than Call of Duty, or if the next one isnt very good, then it will still be the most popular game around.

How do you know the MW2 engine was a just a patched version of its predecessor? IW claim its a "generation beyond the capabilities of the engine used in Call of Duty 4".

It's a heavily modified version of ID Tech 4, the same as COD4. They've played around with it a little, AI I think, but the base engine is the same, and the Treyarch games use the IW engine. It's not a new engine by a long shot, especially in the rendering pipeline.

27-9 on Scrapyard. 25-4 on Favela. My team lost on both occasions.

People suck.

Anyone here on a 360 that would be willing to share their GT? PM me or post it here. Got a k/d of 1.39 that's going up every other game.

Currently using either:

M16 (holographic, heartbeat sensor), bling pro, stopping power pro, steady aim pro.
Barrett 50 cal. (thermal, heartbeat sensor), bling pro, stopping power pro, steady aim pro.

Why would you want to share? I wouldn't think two people could play on the same GT - you would run into problems of who got to play unless two people with the same GT can play at the same time.

I got 88 for twenty-something on Scrapyard.
Was happy with that as it's difficult to keep your deaths down on that map if you stick your neck out.

Worst joke ever or genuine misinterpretation?
