Counterpoint: it’s the coaches job to consider the health of players, especially at the college level. To be fair… that’s a 23 year old man telling his coach he wanted to stay in the game.
Unfortunately the coach has no personal benefit in doing so. The pitcher is only around for four years, so if his arm explodes before he gets drafted, well, it was a great trade off.
My neighbor was a volunteer coach at a DI program (he caught bullpens as he had been a minor league catcher) and he told some shocking stories. Injections, pain meds, kids who lost feeling in their arms after 120+ pitch starts.
There is a reason that pro clubs are incredibly careful with their prospects pitch counts. They have a long term view. Contrast that with college coaches. Example: the Giants top pitching prospect (maybe all of baseballs) Kyle Harrison is topping out at 70 or so pitches. He is 21, so would be a JR in college. Compare that with some of the pitch counts in the CWS. The Giants have been building him up for 3 years.
