MLB 2023

Only the second time in franchise history where two Rays players start an ASG.

High possibility that McClanahan starts as well...

He’s been mostly quite good. Was out for a bit with injuries, but he’s probably our #2 guy right now.
Good. He was always dependable, shame that TJS took away a season of his career. He was a solid servant for us.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team score 15 unanswered runs in a game before.

Random question:-

If you get a hit, a run or 2 score, you run around 1st base but get get tagged at 2nd - do you get credited with a hit?

Yes, a single. Doesn't matter if runs score or not. What matters is your last "safe" action, so in your scenario you were "safe" at first, so you get a single. If you were to get tagged out at third you would get credited with a double because the last "safe" status was you touching second. Make sense?

edit: Because baseball of course there is an exception..... if there is a runner on base and you get a hit that scores him, and he is the winning run in the bottom of the last inning, I believe you only get a single no matter where you end up......unless you hit a HR, then it is a HR. Baseball.

That’s what I assumed - thanks man

Except when the player does not manage to complete the homerun play!

@calodo2003 How's Paredes after the clash yesterday. Is an IL stint likely?
No broken ribs, just general discomfort, x rays were right after the game. It’s a travel day for us so not much further info. No IL stint is in the hands at the moment.

I wasn’t watching the game at the time, saw the replay. That was quite a coming together of two large men.

Not even at their ceiling yet - Fried and Wright have both been out for months and it hasn't mattered. Comfortably the best offense in the sport.
Yep.

With our pitching challenges & potentially Paredes being dinged up, I just don’t see us taking the series later this week.

Hoping for a rerun of that Braves / Reds series recently - that was absolutely electric
If we have to really depend on Taj Bradley & a bullpen day in two of the games, it could get ugly. McClanahan is resting with a middle back issue & may not start again til after the ASB. Glasnow could be the best we can run at the Braves (& he’s looked mainly good since his return).

I'm assuming you'll dodge Strider and Elder at least? Morton is still an above-average pitcher but definitely is prone to getting smoked if he can't spin his curveball.

Haven’t seen who is potentially scheduled against us. I would like the scenario you are proposing!

Despite me never expressing an interest in it, the dying social media app is oddly determined to show me baseball stuff lately. Every day I get five or six posts about a Japanese man hitting the ball a long way.

Hits it hard, he does.

Totally forgot about Zach Eflin! Knew there was a starter I was omitting. Dude is nails at the Trop & is taking the bump against his old team today.

We also got Brandon Lowe back from a herniated disc today.

I am nominally more confident v. the Braves.

Anyone watched a game on Apple TV this season, have the announcers improved? Last year was rather cringeworthy.

Through 6.2 innings & 91 pitches, a Tigers pitcher was yanked despite being on a no hitter.

Yay or nay?

Kid’s 25, recently off the 60 day IL due to a fractured foot suffered while attempting to field a comeback liner.

Tigers are 5.5 out of the AL Central & 10 out of the wild card.

I say let him keep pitching.

Welp feel bad for lying to you @calodo2003 - in my defense, didn't think both Braves starters would forgo appearances in their first ASGs but at the same time absolutely love that attitude from them.
I could have guessed how the first two games would have gone if I needed to - a cagey pitcher duel with no team batting to speak of (Yandy was 3/4, but that was half our output), followed by a game where Bradley would have good stuff early, then give up a crooked number in a half inning when the lineup saw him twice. Clockwork recent Rays & our losing streak showcases that perfectly.

Hopefully Eflin can salvage us some pride today, but our bats, especially with RISP, need to perk the feck up.

Tl / dr - Strider is nails.

Yeah Strider is absolutely unreal. Love watching that guy pitch

Reminds me of my favorite copypasta:
still cant get over the fact that luigi from super mario bros throws 100+ mph on every fecking pitch. the braves finding these guys is like some kind of next level witchcraft. this guy will probably end up signing like a 7 year, $34m contract too. feck the entire braves organization and all of their fans

Honestly though not to be condescending but the Braves are on another level to everyone else in baseball right now. Over the last 11 games they've allowed 21 runs in total and have also hit 29 homers - that's pretty fecking ludicrous.

They are stout. They steamrolled right by us in the past couple of weeks even before we played.

Glad our bats finally came alive this game. Fun to finally chase a starter again.

Would have liked to see Eflin go one more inning as our bully has been iffy for a minute.

Yeah obviously small sample but weren't you underperforming xBA during the first two games? Strider is a fecking animal though; you can almost throw out how your team performs against him when he's on like he was yesterday.

Hopefully Elder isn't turning into a pumpkin just yet but it does seem inevitable based on his baseball savant page...

Yes, very underperforming, but indicative of how we played during the 7 game skid.

But, series was close on some metrics; just texted this to a buddy who's a Braves fan after a quick perusal of the boxes...

Each team won a game comfortably. First game was a pitcher's duel decided by an error on us. Same HR numbers (3) for each team for the series. Rays +3 in series strikeouts by pitcher. Rays +1 in steals. Braves left one less player in scoring position.

Certainly didn't feel that positive three hours ago, but this was a much needed win.

Yeah all makes sense. Clearly two top tier teams that should be involved deep into October. Definitely premature to draw too many conclusions - though what I would say more broadly is it has to be somewhat concerning for you that the Braves had such a favorable crowd. Seemed like it was genuinely 50/50 for most of the series - and even if that shifts a bit in a hypothetical WS matchup I'd say that's a bit concerning, especially since you have a young team that hasn't been fully battle-tested over multiple years.

We have had recent post season series success, but we still are young in key positions.

Looking forward to the next half of the season!

Best of luck! Always have had a soft spot for the Rays and pull for you in the postseason personally. Long season of course but hope you can keep up the pace.

Also very happy that Wander seems fine after the HBP yesterday - glad it caught him on the meaty part of the forearm instead of the wrist.

The fecking announcers just got done discussing his limited games last year & he gets one around the hands / forearm. He was out for a ton of games last year with the hamate bone break & I was sure we were fecked when that pitch went inside.
